Boss bemused by penalty decision
Wednesday 27th January 2010, 9:53AM GMT.
“Angry” Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo claimed referee Stuart Attwell was the only man at Portman Road to see the ‘foul’ by Jonas Olsson that led to Ipswich’s penalty.
The Baggies head coach was bemused by the 67th-minute award that left his side playing catching in last night’s match.
But outspoken Tractor Boys boss Roy Keane claimed Olsson was rightly penalised after being warned previously for pushing.
Di Matteo asked journalists: “Did anyone else see a penalty or am I the only one who thinks there was nothing?
“It looks like the referee was the only one who saw any contact for a penalty.
“Nobody saw anything. I had a word with the fourth official and he was just shaking his head.
“There was a bit of contact but nothing else.
“We are very angry about it because that decision has cost is dearly.
“Unfortunately the referee’s decision has gone against us.
“I don’t think anyone else in the stadium thought it was a penalty.
“That was a key moment in the game because out of nothing he thought he saw something.
“But it doesn’t make sense to speak to the referee.
“The game is over now and there nothing else we can do about it.”
However, Di Matteo saluted the character of his squad after they battled back to claim a dramatic late equaliser.
“I think we at least deserved the draw,” said the Italian.
“I thought we were the better team over 90 minutes so I think that’s the least we deserved.
“We had some very good chances and we needed to take one to put us ahead.
“We knew as the game went on we would have more chances to.
“But if you have to play against the referee as well that’s very difficult.
“We kept going until the end and that shows we’ve got good energy there to last the 90 minutes for our third game in eight days.
“It took a lot out of us – and credit to the players for keeping knocking on the door.
“At least we got an equaliser.
“Scott Carson had a few good saves to make but you expect the whole team to do something.
“The only negative point is that we had the chances but didn’t manage to score the goals.
“We created a number of good chances and one was saved off the line as well.
“We had to do something and we put on a few players we thought could create a few problems for them.
“We tactically changed it a little bit.”
However, Keane had a different view on the penalty incident.
The Irishman said: “The referee had warned Olsson about leaning into the guy.
“I saw him do the same at Newcastle. Olsson had already been warned and was punished.
“Some people don’t listen to warnings – I should know.”
And Keane was happy with the efforts of his own players.
“I might not look it, but I’m actually pleased tonight,” he joked. “I have no problem with my players.
“I don’t begrudge West Brom their draw. We could have finished the game off, especially as Carlos (Edwards) and Tamas (Priskin) had chances late on.
“West Brom are a good team. We probably had the more clear-cut chances, but in terms of possession and pressure, West Brom obviously edged it.
“Everyone put in a good shift. We tired a bit at the end, but I’m not taking anything away from my players.
“You can see why West Brom have a great chance of getting promoted. A blind man can see that!”
