We can beat Liverpool says skipper
Tuesday 26th January 2010, 9:29AM GMT.
Wolves captain Karl Henry insists the team can topple Liverpool at Molineux.
Mick McCarthy’s men go into the game desperate for points to prop up their Premier League survival bid, on a night when Bolton entertain Burnley and Portsmouth host West Ham before Saturday’s big clash at Hull.
But the spirited performance Mick McCarthy’s side produced on Boxing Day against the Reds, before going down 2-0, has left Henry convinced Wolves can go one better this time.
He said: “They’re a very good side and they’ll be expected to win. But they’re not playing great stuff and we know we’re more than capable of beating them on our own patch.
“We’re the underdogs but we can cause an upset. It was disappointing to swallow the way we lost at their place. We were more than in the game for 60 minutes when it was 11 against 11.
“We caused them a lot of problems and we’ll be looking to do that again and upset them.”
Henry is looking forward to playing in front of a full house at Molineux with one of the established ‘big four’ in town.
He said: “It’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere and we’re all looking forward to the game. The main thing is we get points now – that’s what matters more than ever. We’ve got past the stage where everything was new to us in the Premier League.
“Now we’re at ‘the business end of the season’ and it’s vital we pick up points.”
After three Premier League defeats in a row without scoring, Henry reckons Wolves must return to their high tempo starts that helped see off Tottenham, Bolton and Burnley last month.
He said: “Definitely – playing at our tempo and stopping teams from playing and having an easy ride is what we’re all about. Sometimes, if a couple of you aren’t quite at your game, that can be the weak cog in the machine.
“We’ve all got to be bang at it against Liverpool and we will be.”
Saturday’s FA Cup draw against Crystal Palace kicked off a spell of six games in 19 days but Henry reckons the players can cope.
He said: “It’s going to be tough, but after playing in the Championship for I don’t know how many years, we’re used to playing Saturday, Tuesday and Saturday.
“We’ve had a break and we’re ready for this busy period.”
