Transfer bids could go to the wire

Wolves will burn the midnight oil to complete their transfer business this month.

Boss Mick McCarthy expects to be busy right up to the deadline, when the clock strikes midnight to signal the closure of the window next Tuesday.

The club are weighing up a third bid for Hull winger Stephen Hunt, but nothing will be completed on that deal before the clubs meet at the KC Stadium on Saturday.

They also want a striker – thought to be the target of the club’s other bid – but that deal won’t become clearer until the clubs manage to get other business completed as the days tick down.

McCarthy said: “I’ve no doubt we’ll be here to midnight on Monday. It’s the usual scenario. We’ve been working at it since the day we walked back in here on July 1 – whether that be to sign players or in training how to get goals and nothing has changed.

“But we can’t force people to come or to let players go.”

In the meantime, McCarthy wants his players to make the most of the pressure being slightly eased for tonight’s clash against Liverpool before Saturday’s ‘must-not-lose’ collision with survival rivals Hull.

He said: “Against Liverpool, the pressure is off us slightly and on them, but we have to put the pressure on ourselves to get points because we need to get off the 19 mark. We’ve been on it for too long.

“Playing Wigan was more emotionally taxing – the pressure is on us because we’re supposed to beat Wigan, who have been in the Premier League for the last or six years.

“People think we should just beat them because they’re near us in the table.”

But McCarthy refused to acknowledge which is the more important of the next two games.

He said: “I wouldn’t even dare to speculate on that. I’d never contemplate putting one game over the other. If I could get six points out of the next two, they’d both be equally important.

“If we take points off Hull, it’s doing us a bigger service than taking points off Liverpool and losing to Hull. We can’t really afford to lose at Hull but we’re not playing them yet.

“We could do with getting off 19 points – we’ve been on it too long. Hull is a massive game. They’re around us but let’s do Liverpool first.”

without some quality premier league experience i really cant see where the next win is coming from? i give mccarthy 2 games to save our season. Liverpool are there for the taking and so are hull. we get no points and were seriously doomed. feb brings blues, spurs, chelsea and bolton. 1 winable game at the reebok thats it. people will say we beat spurs away so we will at home..no chance of that happening.

It will go down to the wire because everyone you have gone for has turned us down, because we dont pay enough wages, and we are on our way down, so at midnight on monday we will sign anyone just so you can say in the press that we tried to get premier league players but I’m happy with the Championship level players who have come in that will keep the Championship players already at the club fighting for there places.

dont spend then dont stay up…its pretty much a known fact in this league. i remember reading an article on here that bully did pre season, it said something like “wolves need to spend around £30 -50 million! He isnt wrong is he?? we have spent 18-20 million and pretty much still play the same side that played last season, give or take 1 or 2 players. Nico what your saying is you want to be in the championship every season.

Also agree with nicos comments, mccarthys had some stick for his summer signings but I think many fans would happily see a team with milijas, doyle, hahnemann and zubar in and I know many people who feel that castillo should get more of a chance and many of us are happy to have mancienne at the club. I even feel halford has a part to play at the club although not as a winger, more as a right back, whether we like it or not, no-one can deny that his throws are a serious weapon.

its this sort of mentality that will see us drop down this season, we cant keep saying we need to beat just the teams around us. Its not enough we need to take on liverpool, its a massive game 3points to play for, gerrard and torres are out, this to me is a bigger game then hull, we need to start believing we can beat teams above us or at least nick draws, it all adds up at the end of the season. Understand what you are saying, but, look at the bigger picture. Out of the European Championships, out of the Cups and with the top four place they so desperately need starting to look a forlorn hope; with a financial millstone around their necks and possible the only way out being to sell players like Torres & Co…(even Gerrard!)Liverpool, don’t for one minute underestimate the pressure on the Scousers tonight and particularly their manager.

Clearly we have our our own problems, but a point tonight would be a good result for Wolves, but not for Liverpool. Come Saturday afternoon at Hull, that’s when the real pressure is on us. We cannot lose that one, and depending upon tonight we may well need to win it.
This January window has been different to previous years because most clubs appear not to have money to spend, hence all the loan deals. Maybe, just maybe the two loans we’ve made are to save the cash for the two players we are trying to sign (watch the cynics pick up on that one !). It will go to the wire, it always does, that’s no different this year.

      • Sir Lupi

I do of course agree with your comments, spot on from a Liverpool point of view, but as a measurement of pressure, we have as much at stake by comparison with our own targets married with an equal pressure. Surely facing relegation is the ultimate disaster in football?? It certainly used to be.

We are now coming into February with only 19 points on the board, its at this stage of the season when before you no it, there arent enough games left to get you out of trouble.

I am a big fan of McCarthy, but we need something tonight, every game counts, so if once again Mick treats this as a warm up to the Hull game and we lose as a result, then I for one will turn against him. Its 11 against 11, always has been, always will be. Nothing is definite in football, just ask Leeds Utd at the moment.

Regarding the transfer window, everybodys skint because everybodys blown their overdraft facility and the banks are refusing to extend the excessive limits. Now to quote JM ‘we are currently operating at a profit’ (in the black), so surely, with a minimal overdraft facility and financial security to compliment our tight ship, that puts us in the driving seat to extend our overdraft facility and capitalise on these suffering clubs? And before I get accused of ‘doing a Leeds’ im not saying that, what im saying is im sure combined with Morgans personal fortune and WWFC Ltd, we could release comfortabley £10m for this transfer window, to see us through until the end of the season

My summary of the infamous three ‘M’s so far this season is simple:

‘The support is their, the money is their, its the ambition that isn’t.’

The article actually says that there is every chance of a change of formation, as 4-4-2 is not working in respect of the lack of goals. What we might see after Saturday is Milijas playing behind Doyle with Jones and Henry in the centre and Jarvis and Bia poossibly on the wings. There would be creativeness and pace.

The agony of being a Wolves supporter for over forty years is exquisite and compared with being a Fulham or Man Utd fan (yawn)it is a joy. We simply don’t have a team that you can throw out week in week out like B’ham and MM has to mix and match. Only if we survive, and we will, can MM begin to attract the quality we desire. Brum have sort of fluked their team and it does happen, Reading did too but we do not have the right chemistry to get the ball to SEB and Doyle, too much sideways and backwards with little option of a long ball as they are too short. We need wingers and an attacking midfielder, simple but difficult. Keep smiling, we are Wolves.

Thought many of the posts have been a lot more positive over the last day or two, except when nappycrappers like Wolvesmod come on and make childish comments.
With a few more points in the bag I would have enjoyed Man City and Arsenal a bit more, but, I must add the Blues and Wigan performances were just awful.
Nevertheless I hope we all enjoy a point or three tonight and the journey home across Lincs and Leics on saturday.
One last hope. The posts on Wednesday morning are positive after we find out just how successful/ambitious the board have been.

But I don’t get your point?

We have a team with to much sideways and backwards movement? Who bought the players that play that way?

On thing that always happens at Wolves is we buy a player that looks like he has potential and after a period in our team the same player looks awful….it is as though the skill has been “coached” out of him.

Maybe the manager is ok and the problem lies with clipboard conner, but i know that since our coach left/retired (was it taff evans – the scout) our football style and quality has been lacking.

We need creativity, last season when Jones played with Henry we averaged 2.2 points per game as our play was forward, when that partnership was broken (when MM went for his favourites) we averaged 1.3 points per game.

Our play – with wingers means we need a creative midfielder to have forward vision.
Without it we may aswell not play with wingers!

Mick, there is only one reason why we wanted to beat Wigan and that is to stay in the Premiership, nothing to do with what people are just thinking it was a 6 pointer would have put us in a better position,it is that simple.

We will never have a chance like this season to establish ourselves as a Premier League Club. Hull and Pompey are in financial meltdown and Burnley look to have thrown the towel in with the appointment of Laws. We must start scoring goals and picking up points

I dont care about liverpool the heat is on us.We are on 19 pts with 3 other clubs and just out the bottom 3 on goal difference.Bolton and portmouth have a game in hand to us. We simply have to win one of our next 2 games and I actually beleive we have a better chance tonight than against hull, becuase we have raised our game against the better sides all season. A good performance is the minimun expected tonight to take into the Hull game.My team would be 451, with doyle as a lone striker, mancienne, jones, henry, miljas, jarvis in midfield, foley on the bench if not playing as a full back, zubar to keep his place ahead of stearman.

JEZ don’t push too hard for Hunt incase Hull call your bluff, then where will you be?
I suppose if they did you could always say his wage demand was to great or he failed his medical.

Bromsgrove_Wolf i agree with what you said apart from in Mick we trust…… I did and it doesnt make me any less of a fan than you are if my opinion is we could do with a refresh of manager.

Thats my opinion and i go to every home and away game. We play some good stuff at times but too often we buckle to teams we should be competing against. Its a results based business afterall.

I am not negative its just my view that players should be played in their position. Simple. When we start doing that who knows we may start winning again.

There is an outside chance that a number of prem teams will go into admin before the season ends. In that case we may be saved from relegation. One can but hope.
The crux of the matter is that we HAVE to get another 21/22 points to be (I hope) safe from the drop.
7 wins…possible. Just keep on hoping.

Bolton and Burnley are playing each other tonight as well. that means if we lose and bolton get at least a draw, we are back in the bottom 3. I want to stick with mick until the end of the season butif we go down then he will have to go.

The 3Ms have bought 3 players that are quality Hahnemann , Milijas and Doyle the rest are average championship players . That leaves a lot of money wasted and we are suffering because of it .

    12. bromsgrove wolf if you don’t like to hear your fellow wolves fans passing on their point of view don’t come on here and don’t go to watch the match. if you don’t like to hear fans airing their views and if you don’t like what they say TOUGH! DON’T GO YOU WON’T BE MISSED!this forum is for all wolves fans whatever their views or opinions and before you say anything i was a season ticket holder for 17 years having missed only 1 season (but still went to games)but this doesn’t make my views any more important than any other wolves fans who don’t or can’t get to matches.wot a numpty you are!
