Third time lucky for the Baggies
Tuesday 26th January 2010, 9:10AM GMT.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill is hoping for another strong showing against Ipswich after finally seeing off Newcastle at the third time of asking.
Saturday’s latest instalment in the Baggies versus the Geordies trilogy turned out to be the most entertaining and incident strewn one of the lot.
Since the game referee James Linnington has come in for some stick from the disgruntled Newcastle staff, but the truth is the first two major decisions were made by the referee’s assistant and I thought the man in the middle had a wonderful game, titter.
Video replays are inconclusive regarding whether Jonas Olsson’s header had crossed the line, but the linesman certainly didn’t hesitate in giving his decision.
Newcastle’s only gripe that stands up is the fact they should have had one penalty, but if the referee had watched Monday’s game at St James Park he may well have observed a team of players who go down quicker than a cold pint on a hot summers day, and that may have had an effect on his decision making.
Either way, the truth is we were the better team and deserved to go through to the next round, although I have mixed feelings about us drawing Reading in the next round. I appreciate it represents an opportunity to progress into the quarter finals of the FA Cup, but I have always preferred us to draw a team who are not within our league.
Tonight sees us return to league action against Ipswich and for the next two months the games will come thick and fast. If the lads can perform to the same standard as they did on Saturday week in, week out we wouldn’t lose another game all season.
The 4-5-1 formation looks set to stay with us for the foreseeable future and it could be the only positive by product of the home defeat against Nottingham Forest. Billy Davies team displayed to our head coach Roberto Di Matteo the benefits of playing five in midfield and it is no coincidence that we have suddenly taken a similar approach to games.
Not that I am complaining, the formation has seen the re-introduction of Robert Koren who was superb on Saturday while Graham Dorrans is just getting better and better. The young Scot looked by far the best player on the pitch on Saturday and that is no small compliment when there were Argentinean internationals on display.
The truth is Dorrans has not only been our best player this season but he has also been our most consistent and, to boot, our top goal scorer with 10 goals already.
He has easily become our most influential player and I can already see our away game fancy dress theme when we visit Crystal Palace being Kilts to honour his displays this season, plus I cant wait to see the likes of Hilltop Baggie, Sir Terry and Wbaforever in skirts, for some reason a Monty Python sketch comes to mind!
Tonight’s game will be no walk over, Ipswich may be at the wrong end of the table but you get the impression that it is only a matter of time before manager Roy Keane turns them round. But if the lads play as well as they did on Saturday, there is only one winner.
My only concern is the energy levels of some of the lads who have not had consistent runs in the team. Roman Bednar, Marek Cech and Gabriel Tamas may well struggle to play Tuesday, Saturday, every week, but they may not be on their own.
We have a number of players whose game is based on high energy levels and we may need to rotate the squad or use our substitute’s bench earlier in games.
I expect Di Matteo to stick with the team that started on Saturday as every single player did well, Gonzalo Jara’s passing was poor but apart from that everyone looked good. Chris Brunt played better than he has been lately and, with Roman Bednar playing the lone role supported by attack minded players like ‘Dozza,’ Koren and Jerome Thomas we look like we have lots and lots of goals in us.
Mention must also go to how well Cech and Koren have played since coming in from the cold. It does highlight the strength we have in depth and, as the games continue to come thick and fast, it could be that strength of squad that proves to be vital in the push for promotion.

There are those who think that it may well be Albion and Forest who make the journey to a higher realm this season. I am one of them. Yes, Newcastle are a strong team with brilliant players, but they are also a moaning, diving, acting team with two or three thugs. If refs stand up to them and let’s face it, Mr. Linnington did, they could well collapse, as their supporters, who used to be amongst the best in the UK many years ago, have also developed a spiteful streak. No one, however large the club, has any right to be in the Prem. It has to be earned. Ask Leeds.

Good blog Jarrod. Cyril I agree with your points on Newcastle. However much they may be moaining diving and acting team, there are some with less backbones – the referees when they go to St James’ Park. What was refreshing on Saturday was to see the ref have the courage of his own convictions and not be scared off by the potential of boos and complaints by those in black and white. Perhaps his is an example others should be encouraged to follow.

Afternoon all, I think the final part of the blog stands out to me the most.
Koren and Cech have both been fantastic since coming back into the team and long may it continue.
Hoping for a nice, relaxing 3 – 0 win tonight, but expecting a real battle, where the quality of our 5 man midfield should hopefully come through eventually and earn us the 3 points.

Ned
It also points to the competition within the squad for places which always bodes well. Players know that a dip in form will result in them being dropped (other than Brunt).
Coincidence they are both going to the World Cup?
whatever the motivation is i dont care if it resluts in them playing as well as they did on Saturday.

Hi Bomber,
I was actually going to post that, but then I thought of Chris Brunt’s situation in the 1st team and thought that it kind of ruined my arguement!!
Another thing I was thinking is how there’s competition for every single position in the team now.
However, we have 2 players that I believe we’d really struggle to cover sufficiently if they were to get injured
1. Olsson (Tamas, Meite, Martis are all good players, but Jonas is a massive player for us)
2. Dozza (Koren / Tex / Mozza could all do a job as the attacking fulcrum, but Dozza’s become so influential we’d miss him).

I LOVED the five man midfield. In particular Molumbu’s game was exceptional both away and at home against Newcastle. His energy, drive, persistance and, well…just his ability to be a complete and utter perishing nuisance to the opposition is a pleasure to watch. Not only that but I think his role in particular allows Dorans and Koren to flourish. 10 out of 10.

When Morrison and Teixeira are up to scratch,What an abundance of football brains and skill we’ll have at our disposal in midfield.~~~~BOING~~~~~BOING~~~~JtH.

Bomber I was going to post on your blog…… but I am now on my way to therapy after thinking about Hilltop Baggie, Sir Terry and Wbaforever in skirts.

Sorry, but just to add to it, i reckon they might even don the “Dorran Sporren”.

I think your’e right about the size and quality of the Albion squad and it will be instrumental in getting us promoted. In contrast the Newcastle squad looks a bit threadbare with them having to depend on a number of kids. It could be Albion and Forest for promotion which will be good for Midlands football.

(Nedball)FULCRUM??? Haven´t you heard it´s bad for you. I only use semi-skimmed now. (titter)

I doubt that referee had ever watched a game of football in his life. As for going down easily, did you lot have your eyes closed when Bednar tumbled in the box?
Of course the Newcastle fans were going to complain. Don’t pretend you would have acted any differently. Good luck for the rest of the season. That is, if you didn’t use it all up at the weekend.

An early goal or two when we had them chasing
shadows would have sealed a comfortable win.
However they grew in confidence and but for
Carson kept us in the game. However my criticism of Carson is he appears unsure of
himself and dosent boss his defenders hes not
capt material We must have the best squad the
trick for RDM is keeping everyone happy maybe
we can offload a disappointing Moore who was
not in the squad at Ipswich Although he scored
Brunt has been a luxury what about Gianni in his place a defender who likes to go forward.
