Doyle challenges Wolves to step up
Tuesday 26th January 2010, 9:45AM GMT.
Striker Kevin Doyle has challenged Wolves to prove they haven’t got stage fright against the big boys when they take on Liverpool.
The team have come up short against all of the ‘big four’ so far this season and have been beaten twice by mega-bucks Manchester City.
But Wolves had four good chances at Anfield, before Stephen Ward was sent off to take the game away from them on Boxing Day.
After forcing opportunities in all their clashes against the big teams, Doyle reckons it’s high time they got what their play deserved.
He said: “Liverpool have some great players but teams have shown recently they can get results against them, so we have to go into the game with confidence.
“We’ve shown we can match the bigger teams for periods as we did against Arsenal and Manchester City at home, but the final score hasn’t shown how well we’ve done. I’m sure a lot of teams say the same thing.
“But when we play well for long periods we have to get the results from them. When we played Liverpool away, there was nothing between the two teams until we had a man sent off and it was very tough after that.
“We just need to produce something similar just without the sending off!”
Doyle has the distinction of having beaten Liverpool before and wants to sample the feeling again.
He said: “Reading managed to beat them in the FA Cup, and I remember scoring and being part of a team that beat them 3-1 at home in the league.
“So us getting three points is a realistic possibility if we all do our jobs and play well – and not just for 20 or 30 minutes but 93, 94 or 95 minutes, however long the game is.”
Doyle returns to the starting line-up fresh after being rested for FA Cup duty on Saturday.
He said: “I’d love to play every minute of every game, but the gaffer has to change it around with all the matches we have and I’ll be fresh and ready to go.
“Despite not scoring many goals, we look like scoring and getting a couple at the weekend should help.”
