Time to map out a plan for Villa's future
- Says blogger Matthew Turvey
Wolves 2 Crystal Palace 2
Saturday 23rd January 2010, 5:20PM GMT.
A spectacular late goal by Ronald Zubar salvaged a replay for lacklustre Wolves against Crystal Palace at a half-full Molineux.
Zubar levelled with a superb chest and angled volley in the 84th minute from Kevin Foley’s cross, in front of just 14,429 spectators.
Alan Lee’s third minute header and Darren Ambrose’s excellent 49th minute free kick looked to have ended Wolves’ interest for another year, sandwiching David Jones equaliser on 37.
But the home side launched a late revival through substitutes Kevin Doyle and debutant Geoffrey Munjangi Bia.
Doyle in fact headed against the bar with his first touch, from a Jones free kick.
But it was Zubar who ensured Wolves got a place in tomorrow’s fifth round draw and will go to Selhurst Park on Tuesday February 2, instead of playing West Ham in the Premier League.
Before and after the goal, the home side late siege to the Palace goal, with Christophe Berra somehow failing to turn in Sam Vokes’s headed flick and Shaun Derry heading off the line when Jones’s corner was headed on.
Wolves, who fielded seven changes from the team beaten 2-0 against Wigan last Saturday with one eye on Tuesday’s clash with Liverpool, conceded early when an unmarked Lee headed in off the bar from Ambrose’s corner.
Boosted by their early lead, Palace had little trouble containing Mick McCarthy’s side until Claude Davis was stretchered off in the 22nd minute, with what appeared to be a serious head injury after falling awkwardly going for a header.
Davis’s injury resulted in a six-minute delay during which time Wolves belatedly regrouped after a poor opening.
Once play restarted, Zubar blazed high and wide and Jones twice fired straight at goalkeeper Justin Speroni before Sylvan Ebanks-Blake lashed a rising effort a foot over.
But Wolves’ revival got its reward in the 37th minute when Jones, one of McCarthy’s liveliest performers, scored a classy equaliser.
The former Derby and Manchester United man found the opposite bottom corner with a half volley from 22 yards, after Kevin Foley’s left foot cross was headed down by Andrew Surman.
There was perhaps an element of fortune in the build-up to the goal, with Wolves benefitting from a rather soft free kick on Ebanks-Blake.
Jones hit the target again on 41 minutes, with a dipping volley that forced a falling save from Speroni.
But Wolves were pinned back at the end of the first-half by two efforts, when Ambrose was just wide with a free kick and Alassane N’Diaye glanced over, again unmarked.
Wolves began the second-half showing more urgency and Surman saw all the power from his low drive taken out of it by a defenders legs as it trickled to Speroni.

Unable to watch game today not on TV over here in Malta, had to Suffer Man U V Hull,
As i have said many times over how can we expect to become an established team with all this constant swapping and changing of personnel.NO goals from forward line yet again,2 conceded for the god knows how many times this season.Simply not what the ever suffering faithful were promised last May.

Shows where we are in reality, middle of the road Championship team. Seeya them again next season I am sure

Mick when will you accept that you have failed to change Foley who was our best player at right back into a poor negative midfield player. Your as bad as Hoddle was for playing people out of position. I’m sure they don’t know what you are going to try next as we don’t know what you are going to say next. Leave us now and take the clipboard with you so we can get somebody who knows what they are doing.

I agree with you i have always backed MM but i think even the stauntist MM fans are now begining to question his team selections.i wander if a week with the blues boss may help he may see what keeping a regular team can do. and morgan and his board should also be held accountable for there lack of commitment disire.
Have to agree also. Foley has been terrible as a right midfielder, yet Mick insists on playing him there. The sooner Kightly/edwards are back the better!

wolves sign adlene guedioura on loan rest of season from charleroi

Enough is enough. Mick just hurry up and leave us will you! Why do you still ensist on playing our right back at right wing. There’s no confidence in the team and we can’t beat Palace at home. Jog on.

keogh will be like a new signing, differnce is hes played in the prem….this talk about players we are looking at (beatie, hunt and gardner )is for 1 reason only EARLY BIRD SALES.none of these players will come as we have no intetion of signing any of them….if hull said yes jez would offer him less money than what hes on and we would still lose out on him,so well done mick well done jez and well done morgan.we may as well be still owned by jack for what morgan as done for us so far.
makes me laugth steve ward was saying they sat and watch the wigan game and were very disappointed with the way they all played….is this also not what was said after the blues game…….and the portsmouth game.no good be disapointed about sort it out.

Reading quotes from Mad Mick about how we were playing a strong line-up today, as strong a team as possible, and another line about how the team selection today will have no bearing because of Tuesdays game………. I decided as I always do, to go watch the FA CUP game.
Im sitting here having just read the following on a national newspapers website:
“Zubar was one of SEVEN changes made by Wolves boss McCarthy as he kept one eye on the midweek league game with Liverpool.”
If Wolves had been knocked out we would have got what Mad Mick deserves.Well done Zubar and Co. You were thrown into the team and expected to beat a team that play together every week.
I am more and more annoyed that we cannot keep a consistent team giving us disjointed performances.
If we dont get a result from Liverpool then Mick Out!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds harsh doesn’t it but see games against Wigan, Blues, Hull, Portsmouth, West Ham at home = 1 point.
Agree. Our home form is shocking, as again highlighted by todays result. We have to improve as we can’t rely on away games. L’pool or bust for McCarthy.
I agree, another shocking game at home, total disgrace, shambolic. Be there on Tuesday though ;)

You heard differentto me. On Talk Sport Mick was talking of utilising his “first team squad”. And stating that there is absolutly no reason why we can not use squad rotation to save injuries and utilise some good squad players.
I think this was justified with the performance of Jones and Zubar. Both of whom have made a real case for a more consistnt strating position. Or are you just ranting because you do not like Mick and refuse to see what he is trying to acheive.
We will be fine this season I am confident of that. But we need a little reality on the signings. Who is going to want to come to Wolves, we are just above the bottom 3. All the cash in the world will not tempt em to Wolves. We need to use what we have. Another thing. There is an obsession about “premier league experience”. May I just add to that. If a player is good I do not care if he has had premier experience or not?? Agreed?
Just back from the game and a bit disapointed by a few things.
a) the shape (or lack of it)of the team. I didnt get it! What were wolves trying to do? This sort of match shows how the team is really performing. We looked very championship. Lets get the ball out wide. Not play Foley in midfield so people know what to do with the ball.
b) confidence to get the ball on the floor. Too many times, in all parts of the pitch, where people would flick it up in the air than play it on the ground.
c) I was excited to see the new guy Bia coming on, but first impressions were that he wont be much good when the team is under pressure, and whilst he got in some good positions, he looked like a bit of a lightweight.
d)Zubar had a mixed game, at times looked like a quality player, other occasions, looked like he was knew to the sport!
e) thought Jones and vokes showed promise.
f)finally elokobi got forward a few times and looked dangerous, but ward is so far ahead of him. Ward really is looking like a class act.
g) WHY IS KARL HENRY ON THE PITCH??? What does he bring to the team?
g) Karl Henry plays 10 yards deeper than a player in that position should play at this level.
When have you ever seen Karl win the ball in the last 3rd of the pitch? Take possession in a key area? Set us up on an attack (the way Ince and Rae used to, the way Downing used to, the way Hibbit and Carr used to)?
He plays so deep because he needs that extra 5-10 yds of space to control and deliver the pass.
Yet he’s first on the team sheet and picked every game. Does he not need a rest too? (for God’s sake).
The Wolves side has a stuttering, technically deficient, runner at its heart lacking guile and incision. And that sentence describes the whole side this season (does it not?).
If Mick keeps picking him, I don’t care what else goes on, he is clueless and deserves to be sent down the road. DROP YOUR CAPTAIN MICK!
I agree 100% he is the weak link but MM has maded him captain and he is never wrong. Mancienne would be a better prospect doing HENRY role. The other problem I have is they are not fit and I cannot see what they do on the training groun because they do not open up defences. But ala thats due to our mid-field grneral HENRY!!!!.
Agree have been saying same about Henry/Mancienne for ages Stuart Pearce has played him there for under 21s hes quicker and if he cant use the ball better than Henry its time to pack in…Hannerman,Foley,Zubar,Craddock,Beera,Jarvis,Mancienne,Millias,Bia,
Doyle,Vokes

Anyone who falls for the EARLY BIRDS con trick being played must have more money than sense. We will be playing in the Championship again, with the same manager etc, mark my words.
As far as new signings are concerned. Forget them. Gardner has gone to Brum, Killgalon to Sunderland, Hunt will be on too much dosh and the excuses will be endless. Much like “I tried to sign Dann and Johnson”. You didn’t try very hard Mick or admit it they DIDN’T want to come!
They lost DANN and JOHNSON because MOXLEY would not match Birminghams offer its that simple. They both wanted to comr to wolves but it was money.
So you don’t intend to renew ?
Does that mean you won’t be there next season ?
we’ll beat them at selhurst, and we’ll stay up, inspired substitutions ;-)and geoffrey looks half decent
Keep the faith could have been worse
we are wolves
Report abuse
Does Mick know his best team? No.
Does Mick consistently play players out of position? Yes.
What’s he doing? Blues have excelled this season due to the fact they’ve brought in better players than they already had, who also play every week!
We’re a shambles. The confidence is shot. Maybe we’d be on a role if we’d beaten Man Utd away! But we’ll never know.
L’pool is a must win otherwise he’s got to go.
Heard it from a good source today that Morgan doesn’t want to spend money, so it’s unlikely we’ll buy anyone decent in Jan or see Mick get sacked!
Can you blame Morgan for not wanting this managerial disaster to squander more money in useless transfers?
I’m going to say this first at the moment.
Has anyone else noticed the date for the replay?
That’s right 2nd of February, the same night we were supposed to be playing the re-arranged game away to the Hammers.
The decision not to play that day is now proving to be a real blessing for them. We should have played them when they had a few of their better players out and their future was unsure. Now however, we will be playing them after their future has been resolved and no doubt the players who would be missing will play.
Looks like the re-arranged game will have to be re-arranged, again!
The first thing I will say about the match today is CAN WE PLEASE STOP GIVING THE OPPOSITION A GOAL START! We can’t keep relying on the Houdini way of getting a result.
For Mick saying I’ll play my strongest team read as I’ll leave Craddock, Milijas and Doyle on the bench and see how it goes. However I will concede that Jones did have a good game so maybe Milijas wasn’t needed but where was Jarvis? Strongest side Mick? Don’t make me laugh, last season Jarvo was destroying sides like this with his pace. Mind you the pitch was bigger then wasn’t it?
I’m only going to say this one more time Mancienne is too lightweight to play in the centre of defence as he is at the moment! Thank god this was only a cup game as that decision could have cost us dearly against a better side in the Prem. Surely he won’t play on Tuesday or at least not in the same position, please Mick play Craddock. He may be in his last years but he is our most experienced defender in the Prem and is more than useful at set pieces as we’ve already seen this season.
I’m pleased we got the draw but really we had enough decent chances to beat them IF we kept it tight at the back, although I will say Doyle was unlucky with his header and Vokes gave it a go, fair play to him.
On a positive point the new lad got a run out and played ok IMO. I think he should get a second half run out at least against Liverpool. He did something not too many of our players have done this season which is to shoot from OUSTIDE the box when the chance arises, ok he didn’t score or make the keeper work but if you don’t shoot you won’t score.
I hope this resting players works out for us against Tuesday like it did against Burnley, we rested our better players then (albeit controversially to say the least) so we’ll see.
Somehow though I think as usual, we shall get a “roll a 6″ to see who’s on the team sheet for that one!
I don’t give 2 hoots about Brum, Wolves is and always will be my team but I will say this, they play the same side week in week out where possible. Something which sadly we DON’T (huge sigh).
One more thing…Zubar WHAT A GOAL!!!
Come On You Wolves.

Typical so called Wolves supporters calling for MM’s head again……….Baggies in drag I reckon!!

A Happy Clapper that has emerged again following a draw against a Championship team. None appeared for a week after the previous slaughter by lowly Wigan, and you can understand why.
We don’t need your sort of imbeciles on here, just go the McCarthy Fanclub Group, when you can ejaculate to your hearts content over how good your hero is.
On this group we have real Wolves fans commenting about real things that happen on the pitch, not what you imagine as you sit on your sofa with your can of eco-friendly, low calorie beer!
We are Wolves supporters, not McCarthy fans!

I don’t think so mate – but its funny that you think a baggie fan dressed as a woman (in drag) would be a wolves fan !!!!!

At last a Happy Clapper has dared to appear after the infamous disaster the previous Saturday, when Wolves were shamed beyond description! No Happy Clappers have dared appear since!
Needless to say, this is just a McCarthy fan and not a Wolves supporter. Why not go and post on the Facebook ‘McCarthy fans’ page?
We don’t need such lightweights here. This is where real Wolves supporters post their messages.
WE ARE WOLVES!
So you think that no-one with a positive attitude has commented since Wigan ?
It’s easy enough to check the archive – so I did. I found a half-dozen comments on the Wigan match report that you’d label ‘Happy Clapper’ – and there are any number of comments in subsequent stories.
If you’re going to make things up to support your jaundiced view, then I suggest you make them less easy to check.
A big difference between a supporter and misguided belief.
MM Did a superb job in guiding us to the premiership that cannot be denied,BUT his record in the premier is dire and the amount of changes 7 yesterday is making us a laughing stock.
Sky Bets odd for Wolves to finish bottom is 4/5 ON.
If you are Happy for Wolves to become a yo yo club then that’s your Prerogative,I for one would rather become Established in the premier and at least compete with the Fulham’s,Bolton’s,Stokes of this world.
That Skybet statistic is instructive- the Bookies aren’t mugs, and it shows that a general perception of our ineptitude is now widespread.
We’re playing some dreadful stuff just recently, far inferior even to last season during our sticky run in the Championship, when we at least created chances. I’d definitely say we’re the worst squad in the Prem, which isn’t to excuse Mick- he assembled it,after all. I’ll be surprised if we reach 30 points on current form.
If Morgan ignores this desperate situation, then he will go down in Wolves history as yet another pathetic failure.
Dream on, hand-grabbing our old super stars is not what the club needs now, it is strong management, which Morgan seems incapable of supplying!
Please find somebody else to sell out to who will put the Wolves top of their agenda, where Morgan certainly does not put us.
Dreaming of taking over Liverpool is not what we Wolves need!
If you’re going to use the Bookmakers as evidence, why not give the whole story ?
Sky Bet has Portsmouth at 1/4 ON; Hull at 1/2 ON and Burnley at 8/11 ON.
Yes, the Bookmakers you quote think that we’ll finish 17th…
The fact is that the neutrals – you don’t get much more neutral than bookmakers – think that we’ll stay up. So all the ‘we’re definitely down’ comments are just defeatist hysteria.
Now, I’m not happy with 17th, that’s the barely acceptable minimum – and I’m not happy with what we’ve done in the January window, and guess what, like everyone else I’d pick different teams to Mick. But I don’t think we’re in ‘sack the manager’ territory.
If you think I’m misguided – fair enough – but at least I’m not trying to mislead other people with selective ‘facts’.

Thanks Grey Wolf for such a refreshing and balanced perspective.

Back from game, another poor performance in my book, and dont get me going on SEB what exactly does he contribute to the game? He cant keep a ball, he cant beat a player, he has no close control and falls over, and over and over every time, makes no space, does create side runs, expects the ball on a plate, and throws his arms up in a hissy fit if its not an inch perfect pass oh and falls over have I said that already? You know on Tuesday against Liverpool ‘Sporting Bet’ have odds on how many times SEB will fall over. Now I have just watched Beckford score 2 goals, a striker 2 divisions down, we will never win if mad Mick still plays SEB. Needless to say championship football next year and Palace will skin us.

“We need to put on a good performance and need to win the game against a Championship side,” he added.
Wolves official websit: Today:

Rich5Wolves – I think we can now be 100% confident that when McCarthy says something, he really means the complete opposite!
To say ‘I will not be making many changes’, really means ‘I will totally change the team from the last game’ and when he says ‘I will be resting some of the players for the game next week’, he means ‘I will play the same 11 again on Saturday but for the game on Tuesday there will be a different 11 out on the pitch!
What McCarthy is attempting to do but failing dismally is to copy the likes of Ferguson, Ancelotti, Wenger et al with his rotation policies BUT the biggest problem Wolves have, is we don’t have the quality of players to do this – most of our players are only Championship class and it is similar situation to asking a donkey to win the Epsom Derby, it just cannot be done!
McCarthy may have won the Championship, gained a lot of admirers inside the club (and out?), received accolades from Moxey and Morgan but the people who really matter, the paying fans who turn up week in and week out, have moved on, last season is history but counts for nothing now! What happens to us over the forthcoming months in the PL is of great importance and after so many years of trying and failing to reach the ‘promised land’, now we are here, are we really going to wave the white flag and surrender so tamely? – it certainly looks like it!
Come the end of the season, whether we remain in the PL or drop down to the dreaded Championship again, I hope we gain a new manager for McCarthy will forever be an ‘up-down’ manager, up one season and down the next, do we really want to continue doing this?
McCarthy is not tactically good enough to compete with the other PL managers,, nor does he ever seem to know his best 11 and he is not showing any signs of learning on either point.
IMO Wolves would do very good business to bring in Gerard Houllier as manager, pay him a good salary, let him bring in his own backroom team and then we will see where Wolves can go and I am positive with Houllier, it will certainly not be back to the Championship!

WHO R WBA,
there is only one thing wrong with your comment about DANN and JOHNSON,
McCarthy doesn’t do the buying, tight wad MOXEY deals with that side of things.
So as much as I would like McCarthy out because of his negative attitude you can’t blame him for MOXEY not signing players McCarthy wants.
You can add to that list Mick wanted Beckford in the summer but Moxey signed the Hoff. I like the way Beckford won and took that penalty.A decent offer a bit over the odds would have secured Beckford instead we waste £2m on the cake maker from Vienna.False economy. The best way to ruin a football club is to buy ineffective players.

Does anyone else think we kick the ball out of play too often???
Every team we play seems to keep the ball on the pitch with greater ease than us.
My thoughts on today were that Jones & Vokes were our stand out players.
The Foley thing in midfirld just ain’t working & as last week I thought he was really poor again today, Manncienne & Elokobi improved after a poor first half & Berra was missing Craddock, Hennessey had very little to do but what he had to do he did badly, no coincidence we conceeded off an early corner again!!! SEB’s struggling big time.
McCarthy needs to realise what our best team is & start playing it & stop messing about with it.
I’ve heard him & Morgan have had a big fallout!!

Absolutely fantastic goal from Zubar! However, the attendance today shows what may becoming the norm! This game showed what we are …….A Championship side! No more no less!! I f we dont get 3 points on tuesday then i’m afraid we ain’t gonna make it. So much for new players so far. The new boy looked okay but wait until he comes in contact with bigger beefy prem defenders!I hope he pulls it off. It looks doubtful now if we will sign any of the players mentioned over the last week or so because MMM wont pay the wages. We are strugglin now and they won’t come. Other clubs have come in for them and once again we have missed the boat because of dithering spineless attitudes. A change of policy, attitude, manager and major changes at boardroom level are now required if we are to pull anythin out of the hat. Stoke did it so why can’t we?
i think there is going to be a massive backlash from fans if we go down, one which will take Morgans breath away!
MMM YOU ALL NEED TO DEPART….NOW!
What a let down they all are!
Perhaps we may pull it off on Tuesday. Who knows.
Am very disheartened this season but i will support them as i have always done.

Rowley.
No-one has said it wouldn’t be a tough game, Palace are going well in their league, I won’t deny that.
I think you will find though us fans are judging the season on the season so far, not one game in the cup.
One good example (of many) was Mick keeping SEB on with Doyle and taking Jarvo (our best threat) off and replace him with Jones. Jones did have a good game tonight but when he came on against Wigan he was not really match fit. I think perhaps a better sub would have been SEB for Berra and Doyle on his own up front which he’s well capable of, making it 4-4-1 not 4-3-2, try to keep it tight and maybe nick a goal on the break by using Jarvis’ pace. That’s what Wigan did to us even when they had 10 using N’Zogbia.
Do you seriously believe our best right back (Foley) should play where Jarvis can do so much better for us? I hope not.
yes I too hope we get the 3 points on Tuesday. I’m not going to hold my breath however if that’s what he believes is our “strongest side”.

Which will soon mean that we will be out of this league. Lose at Hull and bye bye Mick !

MM If you had any respect for yourself and Wolves you would do the right thing and resign before Monday. Anybody who thinks Kevin Foley is anything other than a ‘excellent’ right back knows nothing about football. Mancienne is far to short for a centre half, and Elokobi just cant pass to a wolves player since his major injury and looks way out of his depth these days. I thought it was a very poor game today with two poor teams, again most of our passing is slow and square there’s no killer pass between other teams defences for our strikers to run onto and no one capable of shooting from 20yrds out and hitting the target. I thought Zubar made lots of good runs yet never received the ball he deserved for those runs, he’s got good pace looks better on the wing than Foley does. It does look like the Wolves supporters have been let down again by the mangement of the club who made it worse for us by making promises theyve not kept so why didnt they just say we want to keep the squad who won us the league and add a few players but wont be spending much over £15M-20M. At least then every supporter would have known what to expect.

I at least expected a win today i have to agree with everybody else that playing a settled side is far better than all this swapping about. You need to pick your best eleven and only replace as and when nessersary but im not sure whether MM knows who those 11 are, as for TC oh dear what a coach his tactics are useless and 10yrs out of date, the players dont seem to know who’s doing what or who’s suppose to be were,he was a poor coach under Dave Jones in the Prem then went back as youth team coach after helping DJ get the sack then Taff Evans had to retire and went again from youth team coach to first team coach in the Premiership again. Surely their are better coaches with new ideas than him about

I despair at what is going on at Molineux, both on and off the pitch.
My questions are;
1) Why do we let the signing of transfer targets drag on allowing other teams to step in?
2) Why does MM not target players for positions which obviously need strengthening.
3) What players of any note will want to join a sinking ship going nowhere?
4) Why does MM make so many changes when it must be better to play a settled team?
5) Why does MM play players out of position?
6) Why does MM stick with certain players who consistently fail to deliver?
7) Why does the team lack motivation and bite?
8) How much longer has MM got?

We’re playing the way we are because there’s no spine to the team. 20 years ago it was Kendall, Ally & Floyd in defence, Downing in midfield, Bull & Mutch up front. Rest of the team was built around that. Going even further back, it was Parkes in goal, Munro & McAlle in defence, Bailey & Hibbitt in midfield, Doog & 1 other up front.
Right now we have no recognised central defensive partnership, no engine room in midfield, and Doyle up front. Whereas every other team in the Premier – and Blues are the classic example – know their spine and build a team around it. It’s a recipe for disaster and I really fear for the rest of our season, especially if Bolton and West Ham kick on like they’re threatening to do.
By the way, how can ANY of our players need a rest? None of them play often enough to be tired!!!
OK we’re losing it again. If we are missing Ally (10 years past his best which was average) Robertson and Floyd (makes Berra look mobile) Street then all sensible discussion is finished. I know they were different times (and all the better for the loyalty of the fans).
It fascinates me the way that so many people are on here comparing us with Blues and their multi-millions. Early in the season it was Burnley who showed us the way but that seems to have gone quiet.
It’s all part of the rubbish that the 3Ms feed us with, the players are so tired!
For God’s sake most of the Blues first team have played almost every match this season, we just rotate aimlessly! It hurts me to say it as a 60 year Wolf but I am jealous of what the Brum mob have achieved, why isn’t it us?
Of course, we have Thick Mick backed-up by his team of Happy Clappers!
I’ve been saying for a long time that Karl Henry would make a terrific rugby player, he would never be penalised for making a forward pass! Seriously though, our season is gradually falling apart. Our manager hasn’t got a clue. He’s flailing around, chopping and changing, trying different players in different positions, hoping that he can find the magic ingredient, when in truth he just can’t hack it at this level. There is an honest truth Wolves fans that we have to face up to – we are in the Premiership thanks to MM but we have to face up to his limitations, and at the top level he is found wanting. We have to say thanks to Mick for what he has done for the club, but accept that he can’t take us any further. What bugs me the most is the happy clappers who say that to critisize the management is to critisize the Wolves, in other words if you blog negatively about a Wolves performance and the team selection, you are automatically an Albion fan!!! The reason Wolves fans such as me want to see McCarthy go is because we want to see Wolves stay in the Premier League and we know that with MM in charge, relegation is a cert.

“IT WILL NOT BE DISASTER IF WE GO DOWN” not my words but that of our board members. No wonder the lack of investment, no wonder the lack of commentary from JM and SM on recent performances and the rest of the season. EARLY BIRD – not for me gentlemen, no longer will I line the pockets of the board and fund the inevitable bonuses issued to our CEO etc.
I am not that naive as to think that business men want to achieve a profit in business but any business man worth his salt should understand that profit will not be achieved through the transactions of incoming/outgoing playing staff but through astute marketing and advertising deals, sponsorship and merchandising. To stand any chance of building on these income revenues you have to have success on the pitch – chicken and egg springs to mind. But if our ambition as a club run by men who simply want to guarantee a moderate to safe return via Sky and supporter loyalty then my FAITH is near it’s end.
Since my first visit to Molineux in 1973 I have lived on the tales of my Farther of greater days, yes I have seen us win at Wembley and spoken on several occasions with the players I worshiped as a young boy – many of these recognised in the recently established ‘Hall of Fame’ but my FAITH is wearing thin. So called lesser teams continue to establish a firmer foothold in the elite league, promises from yet another regime seem thinner than ever. Sir Jack built a stadium and invested over several seasons but did not deliver when we reached the Prem last time around- a spent force maybe but SM and his associates should surely understand the opportunity that lies before them and after30 years of darkness take this club into the light.
Gentlemen – respect the supporters that embrace the club, realise the supporters that could be nurtured, developed in the future and make WWFC a great club – again. Greatness and recognition in your part of this clubs development is greater than any wealth you can imagine.

Well said jonners, I´ve been a fan for 50 years, can´t shake it. Wish I could find it in me to turn towards another club. Just can´t. If Stoke and Portsmouth, Burnley and Hull can make the effort, why can´t Wolves?
We should adopt the Spanish system; elect the chairman, vote him out if he doesn´t deliver. What about it? ¨Fans co-operative ousts chairman¨ Anybody game for that?

In what sense are Portsmouth, Burnley and Hull ‘making the effort’ ?
You’d prefer us to be like Pompey ?
What, bottom of the league, absolutely broke, the players all leaving, the owner never having showed his face, and hundreds of fans protesting on the streets ?
And, by the way, Pompey, Burnley and Hull are the bookies’ favourites to go down. That’s ‘making the effort’ is it ?

This result against Palace was to be expected given the way we have performed in the last few games.I for one hope we do lose the replay because we certainly wouldn’t get much further in that competition leaving us to concentrate solely on surviving in the Premiership. What is most disappointing about the team this season is that whenever we take the field we don’t seem to be up for the challenge we more often than not concede an early goal and then again just after the restart this is solely down to the manager who looks like he has lost the players confidence and for whatever reason cannot motivate them.
With the club having little activity in the transfer window speaks volumes for our lack of appeal to possible signings which will in the end seal our fate this season I’m afraid.
We need a new manager now at least he will have four months to sort out the players he would like to keep and the ones to let go in the off season.

I am not saying we should go all out and get into multi million pound debt but at least show some ambition as blues and stoke have done and give the club a chance to establish itself in this division.
Personally i dont think mcarthy is the man to take us any further as he hasnt a clue about tactics and his transfer record at this level is awful. I hope he proves me wrong though.

For those wondering why Jarvis was missing, Mick has sent him on a six weekd training course (weekends included) on how to cross a football. Anyone who knows anything about wing play will agree with me, you can be as quick as a cheetah but it’s no good if you can’t;
1. weight a pass/cross
2. pick out a player
Oh and as for corners, why can’t we beat the first defender?
Sorry to moan, but these consistent errors are going to cost us!!!
Fair play to you Essex Wolf.
It’s not moaning it’s called making an observation.
How about this point though, see if you agree.
One of the main reasons Jarvo isn’t at his best shall we say is quite simple. He can’t go racing down the wing like last season because.
1) The pitch is smaller.
2) He daren’t leave Ward on his own to defend as he can’t cope with the quality of players who’ll challenge him in this league.
In the Championship Ward did ok at left back as the players’ skill who he faced was less than it is now, harsh but true.
I could be wrong but I reckon if Jarvis was confident the left back could cope without needing his help, then he would not be thinking about having to get back so often and IMO would produce a better quality of cross or pass. Last season along with Kightly, Jarvo was without doubt our main threat and he produced plenty of good balls into the box along with Kightly, in turn these were converted into goals by SEB Iwelumo Vokes and others.
IF we can get a left back who can cope on his own better in this division that’s when I truly believe we will see the best of Jarvo again. Along with making the pitch bigger of course.

Mick has seen for us again!
Completely agree about the comments on Ward, Mick will not drop him as he is too stubborn. Without a half decent left back our left side will always be weak. If nothing else Jarvis has improved his defensive game, but at the cost of his attacking ! The problem is not Jarvis, although his crossing has been a shade eratic at times.
Maybe playing a right footed player on the right wing would be the answer? It’s tough to go on the outside (as Jarvis does a lot) on your wrong foot.
Another Mick fau pas this.
I can understand playing Jarvis on the left when Kights is fit. But we’ve been making do this season down the right yet we have Surman, Ward, Friend and even Jones at a push who could play wide left and then Jarvis on the right. Maybe we should double Mick’s salary for him to work that one out.
Bad Bad management
Report abuse
Yep, agree with your ideas on the left wing dilemma, you could also add Bia to that couldn’t you? Yes he’s young but he’s quick and likes running at people and he can use both feet like Jarvis. They could swap wings during matches as the better clubs do, you will notice. Yes pie in the sky talk, but it’s there all the same.
If we did do that though, Jarvis on the right wing would be good BUT someone who can defend well would have to play at left back. Anyone from Zubar, Friend (he is a left back isn’t he?), even Mancienne possibly would be ok, but NOT Ward or Elokobi who try (god bless them) but simply are not good enough for that position in this league.
You are spot on, Jarvis although apparantly left footed (our official web site says he can play with either) actually crosses more with his right. So why not play him on the right with no Kightly yet as you so rightly say.
It hasn’t escaped many of our fans that we need a new left back who knows this league and can defend that position WITHOUT as much help. I would say the list of choices for left back only serves to highlight the need for a new one.
Left back has always been a specialist position at ANY club, and the good ones cost good money, eg. Bale, Cole, Bridge etc.
We knew this in the summer yet did nothing to fix it.

MM is a good manager to get us out the Chumpionship – Now we need a manager that knows how to keep us in the Prem along with a CEO who is interested in more than his ‘bonuses’ for promotion
This new 20 year old wide player is another ‘project player’ – we badly need Prem Proven experience that are better than average – not washed up has bins and journeymen – (Halford has had more clubs than Tiger Woods and where is he now???)

Disagree Rob. I think we need all the practice we can get.
Players who have played 40 odd games for 3 seasons and actually got better for it are being chopped and changed and have only played a handful of games. They’ll be far better for playing as many games as possible.
And if they get knackered? Maybe they’ll adapt their game. Maybe it will teach them that playing football is about making the ball do the work not running around like madmen after a ball you just needlessly gave away.

Sorry but I can’t see where this fascination for playing Mancienne in Henry’s role has come from. Henry is not the best going forward i’ll grant you but he is definitely the best tackler we have in the squad. He wins as many tackles as the rest of the team put together. That’s his role.
What he then needs to do and this may be what annoys fans and lets him down is then give it to someone who can pick a forward pass.
Mancienne is too powder puff to be a ball winner in midfield. Maybe in five years time when he has a stronger physique but not at the moment.
Maybe Castillo is the answer but he seems to have disappeared off the radar – probably forgot to kiss MacCarthys a*s in training 1 day or something, but until a suitable replacement is bought into the club Henry must stay in the role of midfield destroyer because at the moment he is the only one at the club who is capable of doing so.
The logic is that Mancienne is a better distributor, and he’s not afraid to carry the ball forward.
I think one of the biggest weaknesses Wolves have is that we don’t hit teams on the break anything like fast enough. That means that the opposing defence is always well-organised by the time we get there, and you can see what that does to our goal-scoring.
Henry wins a lot of ball, agreed. He also sits there in front of our defence and often takes the first pass. Then he does his little pirouette, and looks to pass it sideways or backwards. By then, if there was a break on, the chance has gone.
Absolutely right.
What we needed was a quick rotation. Foley to RB, Zubar to CB and Mancienne into the midfield. And Henry needs a break.
It was obvious on Saturday that without Jarvis, we had noone running at the opposition with the ball, and without Milijas we had little creativity – although Jones looked OK. Let’s hope that Mujangi and Kightly give us more options.
Big Sam looks like a good partner for Doyle. If we absolutely have to just lump it forward, at least he was winning headers and holding it up.

Took the missus to the game yesterday as well as the kids, who with me, are regulars. Her one comments within the first twenty minutes was “this is sooo low energy!”.
I was alarmed at first, but they did get better and for my money, we were the better team for two thirds of the game.
We cant be surprised we were poor – 7 changes after all and I am more hopeful for Tuesday when Dpyle and Milijas should return. However the Foley thing is now starting to get on my pip. With Jarvis, Bia and soon Kightly available too, we should NEVER need to deploy a slow right back on the wing again. Its like watching Gary Neville with arthritis.

I think that you are doing Gary ‘One Finger’ Neville a disservice with that reference, Foley is slower than that!

McCarthy I’m afraid is not up to the task. Why oh why does he keep playing Foley on the right wing? Why not try Mendez Laing there yesterday? Why does Henry walk into the team every week? He is shocking and nowhere near good enough for the Prem. Where is Castillo? I would even prefer Halford to Foley on the right wing! This season is fast turning into a farce and a shambles! Oh and great idea to decrease the width of the pitch Mick?!
Get this Muppet out….see BLUES won again with almost the same team they have played for the past 12 matches…Sorry forgot Thick Mick doesnt know his best team.
Mick believes in the rotation system, which is why each player has a different position most weeks. More like musical chairs really!
Its funny how most posts on here agree with three major point, which Mick can clearly not see.
1) Foley being deployed as a right Midfielder.
Since week two of him playing in this position, I have been saying that he is not up to it. Everyone else can see it-he is not offering any creativity, but Mick keeps playing him there. There ARE other options-one of which would be looking for a new right midfielder-which Mick clearly doesnt seem interested in right now-just left mids and strikers. At present, we only have Kightly and Edwards who have showed any sort of quality on that side, and even edwards isnt actually a right mid. SORT IT OUT!
2) Henry can clearly do nothing wrong-Since very early on in the season, while others have been praising him, I have had my doubts. Yes, I agree, mopping up, and doing all the jobs no-one else wants, he is good at. HOWEVER, think back to the days of Paul Ince. Ince was good at this kind of job while still having a creative edge to his play, and at this level, this is the kind of defensive midfielder we need! I think Castillo is ideal for the job as well. When he is on the ball, he has a level of composure, which no other wolves players seem to have, which gives him more time on the ball, and allows him to, believe it or not, pass the ball forward!
3) Jarvis cannot cross-When comparing wolves to even the worse teams in the division, it is our crossing ability that haunts me the most-other than our terrible defending of set pieces, but that argument is for another day. Teams like Wigan with N’Zogbia, Hull with Hunt, Burnley with Eagles-need I go on-are still able to get quality crosses into the box, and have the strong wingplay which brought us success in the championship last year. Well Im sorry, but in the premiership, our crossing ability has been none existant, and i just hope this Bia guy has some sort of crossing ability!
Finally, may I refer to all of the above, add in the lazy, uncreative striker that is SEB, and come to some sort of conclusion, which im sure we will all agree with. The problem this year, has been a distinct lack of creativity. It comes as no suprise to me, that the only player who seems to have any assists this season, is Milijas, seeing as he is the only player who seems to want to take any sort of risks, by taking the odd player on, or even, dare i suggest it, shooting from outside of the box! Survival is still a possibility, but ONLY if Mick sees what we do, and that is by signing a left, and right midfielder, and also a striker. If Bia does the job, and either Kightly/Edwards are fit in the next week or so, then he has two more key decisions to make, and it involves dropping Henry for Castillo, and buying a good striker. If he does this, hopefully the creativity problem will be solved, we will start to score, leaving the only problem as being defending from set pieces-and being as this has been a problem for the last four years, I cant see him fixing it, so we will have to suffice with the creativity problem being sorted. Fingers crossed eh??
I think that you were too hard on Jarvis, and the reason is that you did not highlight our bad weakness at left back.
Jarvis has been tasked with providing cover to the left back, and his effectiveness at that job can be seen when he was taken of against Wigan and as soon as he was gone N’Zogbia ran riot down that wing!
Get a quality left footed left back and release Jarvis to do what he is best at!

I can see that MM sees the liverpool game as the priority and fielded a weaker side yesterday, but consider this we have a poor home record, unsettled side with players playing in different position week by week, and a lack of goals. If we have had a good win yesterday that would give real confidence going into the liverpool game. As it was it was a disjointed performance, and although we had a lot of the play, we created little and were a bit lucky with the draw. fantastic goal by zubar
MM should have fielded a stronger team with mancienne in Midfield, not in defence where he is naive and makes too many serious mistakes. Foley needs to play as a full back.Doyle should also have started. This was a good game for SEB to start but apart from not scoring his all round game is not getting better and I dont think he should start a liverpool. I think we have been let down by our Chief Executive in his failure to sign our main targets in the summer.Putting it politely as Grey Wolf said Moxey is far too cautious. But I do think some of this criticism of Mick McCarthy is over the top.He wasn’t such a bad manager when we beat Spurs and he got us to the Promised Land so surely he should have a full season to try and keep us there.Mick must take responsibility as well as Moxey for some of the duff signings.I agree Foley is not a midfielder and Mancienne is too small to be a central defender and the tactics were strange last week after we went to ten men.I also think he was right to reduce the size of the pitch, since other teams have better and quicker widemen than us.In fact I think he should have made the pitch even smaller,5 a side size maybe that would help. But come on guys give the guy a chance until the end of the season. If we beat Liverpool it will be super Mick again.I know it is a big if.

well at least this shows that we do not have 20 first team players!!
Agreed – but in my opinion it also showed that 3 players who haven’t been in the first team regularly would deserve their place: Zubar, Jones and Vokes.

We aint seen the best of wolves this season, Edward and Kightly to return,we need a striker who can hold on to the ball, seb will come good if we create more, will the new guy be able to cover the wing positions.

When will MM stop trying drag the good name of our club through the mud! This playing weakened teams is a disgrace – why not go out to win every game to gain some confidence and momentum! In my opinion MM killed our season at Old Trafford as we had just beaten Bolton & Spurs gaining confidence and momentum! Since OT we have beaten Burnley (a team with the worst away record in the country) then lost all our league without scoring a goal!!! Am I the only one to feel it has killed our season?!? MM must go to give us a chance to get out of this mess! Lets get Alan Curbishley or Steve Coppell in.

On the Wolves web site MM has stated
” if anyone in the championship had todays side they would think that they had a good team “.
Clearly thats what he thinks we are – a championship side.
Wake up Mick !! Those eleven players are in the Premier league now with the big boys and that’s what you should see them as – a premiership team which should be capable of delivering the goods.
If you don’t sign any more new players(which seems most likely to be the case) then sort out what is the best side (not just your favourites!) and stick with them for a time – to at least give the semblance of a team that has met up before the day of the match and doesn’t need the first half hour of each game to get acquainted.

Dave O – I agree, but so far fans seem to be very tolerant at the games, on the back of last year obviously. Id love us to stay up but i fear the back lash from the fans if we lose the next 3 in a row too!! If we lose to Hull then surely bye bye Mick??………

Firstly, with 7 reserve team players starting on Saturday we still got a better result than Albion did at home to Palace with their first team out so you are making yourselves look silly (2-1 palace)just shows the gap in quality between your poor excuse for a club and ourselves. Good result against Newcastles reserves but when you have 12 men you cant really lose!
I think Mick needs to pick his team and stick with it. Foley is NOT a midfielder. Pick this team and stick with it for at least 5 games:
Hahnemann
Foley
Craddock
Berra
Mancienne
Milijas (can drift inside)
Castillo
Henry
Jarvis
Doyle
Iwelumo
We really do miss Keoghs movement and pace. With theam above we have options off the bench such as Iwelumo, Bia, Ebanks Blake, Stearman
Report abuse
That’s a bit harsh on Zubar after Saturday’s man-of-the-match display. I normally resist picking a team, but just this once:
Hahnemann
Foley
Zubar
Berra
Ward
Milijas
Castillo
Mancienne
Jarvis
Doyle
Vokes

.. and 14000 turned up to watch the mighty “Premiership” Wolves look no better than a mid-table Championship side, just as they looked no better (and possibly inferior) to a relegation threatened league 1 side (Tranmere) … keep your head in the sand LW ; you’re not very good and everyone except you seems to realise it.

tHANK YOU FOR THE CAR PARK MR MORGAN,NOT MUCH USE WITHOUT ANY FANS TO FILL IT
tRANSFER RUMOURS AS STATED BEFORE ARE CIRCULATED TO SELL EARLYBIRD SEASON TICKETS.
MR MOXEY IS JUST THE VOICE OF THE BOARD,
NO AMBITION BLAME THEM NOT JM
STILL NOT FORGIVEN MM FOR MAN U DEBACLE
MM STILL DINING OUT ON SPURS RESULT…MOVE ON!!!

Shifter,Moxey is a member of the Board and a very influential one no doubt.Moxey is right in trying to keep costs down, but he is wrong in not delivering main transfer targets.Easy said than done but Moxey has a poor record overall in this respect in the last 9 years. He negotiates deals to death and the best players go elsewhere, with a few exceptions such as Doyle.

The Club doesn’t circulate rumours and tries to do its business quietly. They only comment when asked direct questions by the media.
Most of the rumours we see are circulated by the E&S who are trying to sell newspapers, not season tickets.

So dip-stick Mick again refuses to play his first choice team.
In doing this, our plonker of a manager has…
…let down the fans (AGAIN) who turned up
…thrown away our best shot of a local derby in the 5th round of the cup
…possibly waved goodbye to a £million+ payday for the club (bet Moxey and the money men are chuffed with that !)
All whilst Burnley, Stoke, Portsmouth etc. all manged to put out their 1st choice 11.
I am sick of this man, his managment ideals, his poor tactics, his poor poor signings who simply are not up to the job, his constant playing of players out of position, his arrogance towards fans, his dragging the name WWFC through the mud (we’re the subject of debate on TalkSport again this morning !) …….. I could go on and on and on…………….

what debate?

The question of resting players in the FA Cup was raised on the breakfast show…..of course we were mentioned more than once (seems we are now the national benchmark)….in particular an Arsenal fan rang in expressing his opinions on Wolves ‘raising the white flag’ at Old Trafford and the repecussions which affect many teams….whereas resting players in the FA Cup affects nobody but yourself and your own chances.

Malta, I was interested to note from one of your earlier posts that after years of being a season ticket holder you have moved to Malta. No wonder you keep going on about the good weather.I suppose Mick is big enough and well paid enough to take the stick.I think Cullis,Shankly and Clough would struggle at Wolves with Moxey running the show.Mind you they would probably take him outside for a chat about making sure he signs the main transfer targets.
Chris,Those 3 Managers would certainly keep even this lot up,Cloughie would not be making the changes as Mick keeps doing, and all three would be able to bring out the best which Mick seems unable to do.
With regard to Jez nobody really knows what budget he has given Mick, but it is no good buying players and then not playing them.
By the way after a superb weekend of glorious warm sunshine it is cold grey and damp today.

We are fast becoming the laughing stock of football thanks to a clueless manager!
I have friends who support lots of different clubs, and none of them think Wolves are a laughing stock.
If they’re amused, it’s at Pompey’s money troubles, Man U’s massive debt (and FA Cup exit to Leeds), Liverpool’s imminent exit from the ‘Big 4′, and Notts County’s burst bubble.
Most fans of other clubs don’t care about us one way or another.

Grey wolf I have to say how glad i am to read your posts on here. Sometimes i think that only the mick / moxey / morgan out brigade contribute but i have enjoyed reading your intelligent and (in my view) correct obsevations about the club and the team. I like your team selection too. Jarvis on the right and Nenad on the left with licence to drift. Good call too on Vokes.

Grey Wolf, In my experience older fans outside the West Midlands have a soft spot for us, since many recall the great night games of the 50s.They also say we are a big club who should be doing better especially given the funding from Sir Jack

Chris,Well said the Maltawolves supporters club has close on 200 members.
They are ardent followers with a great love of WWFC.

Actually, I think you’re right. My mate the Hammers fan says that the first shirt he had as a kid in the 70s was Wolves.
So let me re-phrase that.
Most fans of other clubs either don’t care about us, or they actually quite like us.
We’re definitely not a laughing-stock.

Another Player signed for the bench,
they say he his a good player, never mind MM and co will soon coach that out of him.
Who the hell is this new signing!! never heard of him, whats happened to the premiership experience we were promised!! This club is a joke. Moxey and McCarthy out and if Morgan doesnt pull his finger out, he can go as well.
MM has not got a clue, well out of his depth.
JM seems happy to balance the books by not paying higher wages to get established premier league players.
SM talks rubbish… where is this £30M he had to invest once he bought the club, we got £50m for getting up, I’m still not convinced the money has been spent from the sales of Keane, Lescott, olifinjana etc.
Jason Roberts £1m is this the ambition of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
the only way is down I’m afraid. And according to Morgan, that wouldn’t be a disaster, well it would because we would not be coming back up for a while.
Let down Fan…again
Report abuse
We was let down again on Saturday 14,4000 spent hard earned money and for what to see a squad of players mostly playing out of position.MM says he needs to rest players to win the matches in and around us,well that as clearly NOT worked. So why doesn’t he for the rest of the season play the SAME 11 and see if that works he may suprise himself, see that it does work just look at Brum as a guideline, players shouldnt need a rest every other game im sure they themselves would sooner be playing than warming the bench. They are as MM says Young & Hungry in that case surely they can play every match with the exception of perhaps Jody Craddock having said that Graham Alexander of Burnley at 38 plays every match?
meanwhile I presume Mr. McCarthy will be lodging a formal complaint concerning another team in the competition? The manager (a certain Mr. Wenger) has defended his decision to field a weak team (not full strength) and almost certainly to have given the game away to his opponents.
While not a premership game this does give his side an unfair advantage since he was able to save his stronger players for that.
On the basis its not good form to sack a manager who gets your club promoted, I do feel some sympathy for Morgan… BUT
i) in any business surely you only get in new blood better than your current staff
2) In winning the championship we let in far too many goals, and must have realised that our prolific strikers would find it more difficult in the premier league.Guess what!!!
3) So why no defenders signed, or at least any that play regularly,
4) There has been a small cull, ie Collins, Shakell, Hill, Ward….
5) I agree with those who say Jarvis is not so effective as he has to spend all the game protect Ward at left back, you can`t play 4-4-2 with pedestrian full backs. ie Wigan for one. Why not play Stearman, Zubar or Macienne at left back instaed of MM`s lovechild?
6) Against Villa we played 4=5=1 and looked good, with EB struggling when we oplay 4-4-2 its no wonder our midfield get overun,
7) last time i noticed we were playing in the English Premier laegue, not the Belgian first division. I refer to my point one.
8) MM to go end of February. Thanks Mick but you have lost the plot
