Horton promises to box clever
Saturday 23rd January 2010, 7:00AM GMT.
Stourbridge middleweight Sam Horton has promised to box clever from now on as the road back to British title contention begins in Birmingham.
The 24-year-old takes on Jamie Ambler at the Holiday Inn next Thursday night for the vacant British Masters title up at super middle, looking to exorcise the demons of his disappointing loss in an eliminator for the Lonsdale crown last September.
A 13-fight undefeated record was scuppered by a two-round knockout loss to Peterborough power puncher Cello Renda that night in Manchester, and Horton hasn’t fought since.
But ‘The Man’ is now ready for action again and insists lessons have been learned, with the focus know on fighting from the head rather than the bravado of the heart.
Now the climb of the rankings must again start in earnest, starting with a re-match against a much-travelled foe looking for revenge after being outpointed at Wolverhampton Civic Hall last April.
And Horton will be no chances this time.
He said: “This is a stepping stone to get me back up to where I was before, and hopefully I can put that last performance behind me in the process. I won’t be living in the danger zone anymore, losing that fight has made me learn to listen and there’s no point in standing there just to prove you can take the shots.
“No-one wants to get the end of their career and have nothing left to give, or have a serious injury, and I have the boxing ability to be better than that. At the end of day, I have lost one fight, so with a good win this time I will be on the up again.
“It’s not going to be easy, Jamie will be well prepared because this will be like a world title for him.”
