Albion 4 Newcastle 2

Albion made it third time lucky against Newcastle and moved into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a controversial win at the Hawthorns.

Graham Dorrans scored twice from the penalty spot for the Baggies, with Jonas Olsson and Jerome Thomas also on target.

Andy Carroll got two goals Newcastle but the visitors were upset about the award of Albion’s first two goals and livid about the third, with the Baggies’ penalty awarded as Shola Ameobi lay injured at the other end after a strong appeal for a spot-kick of his own.

The home side, who had drawn their two league meetings with the Magpies, had comfortably the better of a low-key first half and the seized control with two disputed goals.

Albion had already seen a Jerome Thomas shot deflect wide when they went ahead from a Chris Brunt corner. The flag-kick was headed towards goal by Olsson and referee James Linington awarded the goal, despite Jose Enrique’s attempted clearance.

Dorrans saw a shot deflect wide off team mate Robert Koren but it was not long before referee Linnington intervened again.

Roman Bednar got goal-side of Tamas Kadar and the Hungarian dragged him to the ground. The linesman had no hesitation awarding a penalty and Dorrans fired the spot-kick hard to goalkeeper Tim Krul’s left.

Newcastle showed more urgency in the second-half and were denied a penalty on 58 minutes, when Dorrans appeared to bundle Ryan Taylor over in the box.

They gave themselves hope four minutes later when Jonas Gutierrez made a surging run down the left and crossed for Carroll, who struck a superb volley past Scott Carson in the home goal.

But Albion restored their two-goal cushion in the game’s most controversial incident on 70 minutes.

Substitute Shola Ameobi got behind Olsson and appeared to be fouled by Gabriel Tamas, but referee Linington allowed play to continue despite pleas from Albion goalkeeper Carson for Ameobi to be treated.

When Thomas drove into the box and was tugged back by Taylor, Albion were awarded a second spot-kick and Taylor was shown a straight red card. Dorrans made no mistake with the penalty.

It was 4-1 with 13 minutes remaining Robert Koren broke from midfield and fed Bednar, whose shot was deflected by a defender for Thomas to finish at the far post.

Newcastle grabbed their second in stoppage time as the ball broke for Carroll, who fired home from the edge of the box.

these things even out over the season and lets not forget they had the referee on their side last monday night
albion had complete control from the start and over all 3 games have been the best team
i was more shocked at the way alan smith was acting trying to get at fans in the halfords lane after the pen was given what an idoit he was for acting like he did
hope this kicks us on to a decent run in the league

There was nothing controversial about either of the Albion’s first two goals. The linesman gave both and was well placed to support the ref. We’ve outplayed them three times now for 1 win and 2 draws, but at least this time their baying supporters and diving players didn’t fool THIS ref for one minute.

Woah… haven’t been on here in a while but I have noticed its all change. Hows everyone been and how exactly does this thing work??

First of all I would just like 2 say
Thats how you beat the mighty Newcastle :) Boing Boing!!

Maybe it was a bit controversial but the 2 penalties decisions were justified. The only complaint Newcastle can have is they were unlucky to not get a penalty themselves but we were just the better side simple as that! And it could have easily gone to 5-1 before it went to 4-2. Luck evens out, we should have won Monday nite. The Geordies moan that the ref was on our side, but the ref was on their side Monday! Every tackle we made, they got a free kick, their 1st goal on Monday was from a free kick that shouldn’t have been. Even after all that we still managed to outplay them at their place and how Miller didnt score was unbelievable. We had twice as many shots/corners and should have won! Like people on here have said we have been the better side in all 3 meetings.

The problem is Newcastle dont like losing. Even though the result was never really in question and even if u take away our 2 pens… they still didnt do enough to win. Their luck had to run out some time. I have seen a few of their games and they have had the ref on their side most of the season, recently against Middlesboro in particular stands out. the way some of their players acted as well was a disgrace.

Todays result just re-affirms what Newcastle are all about, yes they have magnificent support. No, they dont belong in this league. But they are just a bunch of moaning bad losers. They think just cuz they are Newcastle they should get everything their own way. The club has gone through some bad times and they have nothin in a footballing sense to brag about. But the toon fans I have met in my life are arrogant in a different way to the likes of Chelsea/Man Utd. They genuinley think Newcastle is the centre of the universe. And I dont know where all this comes from that they have got a great set of fans??

They are top of the league, and at the final whistle Monday nite they boo their team after a good result for them, just beacuse they didnt win. Like I say just bad losing moaners! I dont wanna just bash newcastle cuz as I say they are Premiership club that deserves more, and they have a following that most teams (Not All) would be proud of… its just a shame they are not very sporting like.

Anyway, even though its only the cup. This should send a message out to the rest of the division. Great result Boing Boing!!

Welcome back to the fold Danno.
Totally agree about fans. The media always confuse quantity with quality. Man Ure, Arsenal and Liverpool are easy to hitch your wagon to, a bad season for them is not actually winning a trophy and they’ve enjoyed this for many years but no real supporter would want to be a glory hunter would they.
Fans of teams like Newcastle, the Villa and Everton have it fairly cushy. Even though they don’t win a lot, they still spend most of their time in the top league and enjoy big money signings.
Clubs like ouselves, Blues and Wolves, haven’t won much and suffer from having any gems we unearth cherrypicked by more successful clubs.
But the real heroes support Walsall, Stockport and Colchester. Never won anything, never likely to. Inevitably lose their better players yet they keep on going. Well done to them.
Supporting your team is done on cold nights in January, during games that mean nothing, not on sunny saturday afternoons at Wembley

Didnt go to the game yesterday and had the missfortune to listen to the commentry on radio Newcastle or Radio Bias as it should be called.

read many reports in the papers and seen the tv coverage and i cant see what your complaints are, both decisions were blatent penalties and tv shows the ball for the first goal was over the line watch the players reaction hardly a complaint.

Radio bias went on to describe how all afternoon Albion players were constantly falling to the ground with injuries did they not see the pathetic performance by many Newcastle players on Monday evening, when we all clearly witnessed a very bias referee towards the home team.

When you look at the stats and the match overall you were beaten fair and square by a better team on the day.

Just hope this result boosts confidence in the albion side and we can now go on an extended winning run which will give us automatic promotion and watch Newcastle and Forest scrap it out for the other place, however i do think the Forest bubble will burst and that it will be Albion and Newcastle that will take their places in the premier league

I cannot believe how this result can even possibly be called controversial by the E&D??

We were far and away the better team, we deserved to win, and if it wasn’t for Newcastle’s constant moaning at every decision given against them AGAIN, no one would even bat an eyelid about it.

All the talk should be about a fantastic attacking performance by the Albion, but instead we’re talking about a horrible bunch of cheating whingers and how they’ve been so hard done by.

Just been over there and they’ve signed their second Charleroi player in 4 days.
Charleroi are 13th out of 16 teams in the Belgian league.
At the beginning of the season thay told us they weren’t going to fall into the trap we did by buying second rate foreigners. Thank goodness they didn’t. They’re actually hoovering up all the third rate foreigners.

Come on TRBH you know better than to pass judgement before a player has kicked a ball. Regarding Charleoi’s league position, they could still be there if Ronaldo and Rooney were playing if they other 9 were total garbage, don’t get me wrong i’m hardly inspired by the signings but I’ll give them a chance. Dorrans came from lowly origins as did our very own Kites. Frankly I’m so sick of the constant garbage posted on our boards I’m giving up, no one is really interested in exchanging ideas or debates. Good luck for the rest of the season I’m sure you’ll make it up and as for us….well its on a knife edge and we have a chance and this is the season to do it with so many clubs struggling at the foot of the table.

Thought there might be a few Geordies on here today and I’m not surprised. Apart from the two good players on the left hand side of the team the rest of the team is designed to intimidate the opposition . Fortunately referees are now beginning to know this. The reason they lost heavily is that they came up against an Albion playing the brand of football Geordies can only dream of. I am surprised that Chris Hughton who was a good player himself and spent his career at a club renowned for good football condones the antics of Smith and Nolan who basically are just thugs.

We were playing them off the park before the sending off. The penalties came from the pressure Albion applied and the frustration amongst the Newcastle players at getting the runaround. On Monday night the ref gave everything the toon army screamed for; every 50/50 was appealed for by 40000 Geordies and the ref. couldn’t handle it – but for this we’d have taken 3 points. We’ve outplayed the top side in our division 3 times now, we need to show the same commitment against every team and we’ll have a great chance of (another) promotion.
