The Wolves fan view of the window

Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd gives a fans perspective on the transfer window and hopes that the January business does not begin and end with Geoffrey Mujangi Bia.

Love it or hate it, from a fan’s perspective, the January transfer window often gives us the quixotic hope that a faltering season can be turned around with the magic wave of a chairman’s cheque book.

Stoke’s survival last season was aided massively by the acquisition in the winter transfer window of James Beattie, a player now looking destined for Fulham and not Wolves, more the pity.

I’m sorry, but I find it hard to get over-excited when the news filtered through yesterday that we had signed Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, apparently another You Tube sensation. I’m not the greatest of footballers, but edit a couple of my goals and runs together and stick it on the web and I would probably look a world beater!

We need something to start the Wolves engine motoring again. We need an Adam Johnson, a Stephen Hunt or a Jamie O’Hara. We need a big name signing for the fans to believe that this season isn’t going to end in disaster.

I have said it before and I’m going to bore you all and say it again – I am sick and tired of everybody saying that there will be three worse teams than us at the end of the season and we will therefore survive relegation by default.

OK, if that’s the case, lets look at the evidence. Portsmouth are on the edge of abyss, Burnley now have Brian Laws in charge, Hull need to offload players to balance the books, Sunderland are on the slide, Bolton and Blackburn have looked awful – on it goes.

But I don’t want to rely on other three other teams being a little bit more rubbish than we are and I’m sure you don’t either.

Our manager Mick McCarthy bought poorly in the summer. He brought in mainly Championship level players to make up the numbers and it’s a gamble that clearly hasn’t worked.

Arguably, only three of those signings – goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, Kevin Doyle and Nenad Milijas – have made any difference to what we already had at the club.

Just why didn’t Mick spend the six odd million quid wasted on Andrew Surman, Stefan Maierhofer and Greg Halford on one quality centre-back, winger or striker?

OK, I accept that attracting the big name players to a newly promoted side is always going to be tricky, especially with the wage structure we have in place, but I’d rather give a player a bit of extra dough than line the pockets of those football agent vermin.

Mick can’t do a thing about the mistakes of the summer now, but he does have a chance to bring in players who are going to make a significant difference for the second-half of our season.

Mujangi Bia could well prove to be a success, but history shows that signing unproven players in a winter transfer window rarely pays dividends.

Proven Premier League quality may not come cheap, but there is a fundamental reason for that and the clue is in those first three words.

When I met Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey last week, he was quick to point out how this club is financially sound and debt free. Fair enough and yes I’m glad we are not in the economic mess that Portsmouth, West Ham and Hull find themselves in.

But what would you tell your grandchildren about our latest top-flight adventure? “Well little Johnny, we may have finished that season relegated, but I tell you what, the books balanced and we made a profit on the hotdogs.” Unless the kid is an aspiring accountant, I can’t imagine they’ll be overly excited.

Come on Mr Morgan, you said yourself that we are not just here to make up the numbers, well now is the time to prove it. If our next signing is Daryl Murphy from Sunderland and not a quality signing of intent and purpose, then we may as well give up now.

Just what is this club’s ambition this season?

Moving on and let’s not bother talking about the Wigan game, it really was abysmal.

Instead let’s focus on the upcoming back-to back games at the Molineux, starting with Crystal Palace in the FA Cup at the weekend and a welcome distraction to the toils of the relegation battle.

It’s nearly 15 years ago since we played the Eagles in the sixth round of the FA Cup when they absolutely battered us in a replay at Molineux. We lost 4-1 that day to a Palace side who were then in the top-flight and if you get a chance, the last two goals are belters and well worth revisiting on You Tube.

Now the roles are reversed with Wolves in the Premier League and Palace just outside the play-off places in the Championship. But I think their manager Neil Warnock will have them fired up against a Wolves team low on confidence on the back of a trio of recent league defeats.

Darren Ambrose will be dangerous, but Palace’s biggest threat is likely to come from wonder kid Victor Moses who has been linked with a big money move with just about all of the top clubs as well as Real Madrid.

Mick has already stated his intent and will play his strongest side. So hopefully we won’t see the likes of George Elokobi, Surman, Matt Hill or Maierhofer and therefore we should have a really good chance of being in the hat for the fifth round.

I’m sure that Wayne Hennessey will be in goal and I would give Kevin Doyle a spot on the bench, with the game against Liverpool in mind. But please Mick, no more Kevin Foley in midfield. Round pegs and square holes and all that?

After that appalling miss against Wigan, I’m sure Sylvan Ebanks-Blake will be eager to prove a point in this game. But with 19 unsuccessful shots on goal this season and just one goal from the spot, I do think that he has had his last chance to prove he can cut it in the Premier League.

There is no room for sentimentality, especially at this level of football, sorry Sylvan.

I think the equation is simple – his replacement needs to be a target man of proven quality, not a donkey like Kevin Kyle or a Maierhofer who looks alarmingly out of his depth, maybe then we can believe that we have a fighting chance of survival.

Of course, a win against Palace will be a welcome boost to morale, but I would exit the cup if it meant we picked up three points against Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Facing Liverpool under the floodlights next week is why we love playing at this level of football. They are a beatable side, as was nearly shown when we played them on Boxing Day, but even without Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres they still have enough talent to give us a very difficult game.

Enjoy the cup game and the rest of your weekend.

Up the Wolves!

We may have signed Geoffrey but will it work given the fact that we’ve just sold Bungle to Preston. Having said that, we still have a muppet playing at left back.

Lack of Premiership quality shows Morgan’s lack of commitment to the club and faith in Moxey/Mick. At least he’ll be able to watch his team thrashing Wolves on Tuesday night.

Will all of the happy clappers on here be going to the cup game tomorrow? Bob Wolf will be there as usual but doubts all of you lot will be there.

If the players mentioned end up moving (therefore were available) but go elsewhere for bigger fees/more wages we will have to conceed we are run like a Championship club having a season in the Prema and not vice versa. Was lovely to see Nathan all kisses and cuddles with Morgan at the Hall of Fame last week, I wonder if he was so direct in his approach then ?

I refute the accusation of poor spending in the summer (with the exception, with hindsight, of Halford). Blues did not buy quality in the summer. They purchased an £8mn untried striker. Yes, now the money is in it looks like they’re investing, and I hope we do as well.

Can’t argue with any of that Nathan. Wished I could, but I can’t – we have to ask why, if we have aspirations to be an established premier league team, are we not going for Beattie, Hunt – they should be the minimum quality we are looking for. We going to try and do it on the cheap aren’t we? No Wolves fan wants to see us in debt, but Morgan was lucky enough to buy a debt-free club for a tenner, so we’re hardly in dire straits are we? I hope the Belgian (Zaire?) kid does well for us, but I find it hard to get excited by untried Johnny foreigners. I hope I do enjoy my weekend, ‘cos last week’s was awful!!

It’s so easy on “Football Manager,” isn’t it? I want “Player X” and so he comes. Why doesn’t it therefore happen with the Wolves? we want Johnson, Beattie and Hunt, and they should just come to us because we put in a bid. Forget the fact that Middlesbrough, Stoke and Hull don’t want them to leave. Forget that they are under contract. Forget the fact that they might not want to move at this particular time. Forget the fact that they may be getting paid too much at theeir current clubs and we realise they are overpaid and will not match silly demands. WE WANT THEM, THEY SHOULD WANT TO COME, THEIR TEAMS DON’T WANT TO RELEASE THEM. JUST BLAME THE 3 M’S. The sheep on E & S including the so called journalist will follow the negativity, and you will think you have at least half a brain.

GET REAL PEOPLE!!! THIS IS NOT “FOOTBALL MANAGER.” PLAYERS WILL NOT FALL OVER THEMSELVES TO JUST COME BECAUSE WE PUT IN A BID.

Even Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City get knocked back by players. A couple at least of them wanted Ribery and David Villa. Which one of them did they choose to sign for? Oh, that’s right!! None of them. Blame their owners, CEO’s and Managers, and sack the lot of them. (Or should that only be at Wolves?)

        • Breretonwolf2008

Chris, I agree we all want the same thing. The problem is identifying AND getting the necessary players. There are not a lot of comings and goings this window, and it appears that even the squad players from teams in the Prem are not being made readily available. (Martin O’ Neill didn’t want Gardner to leave by all accounts, but the player insisted he wants first team football. Birmingham is a good fit for him, as he is a lifelong fan, along with his family members, so we were unlikely to get him.

Many Prem players are away in the African Cup of Nations, and I wonder if that is affecting things? Teams need to use their squad players to fill the gaps left temporarily by these missing players, and so less squad players are being allowed to move.

It’s a hard act to get right. Risk all, and maybe do a Portsmouth? Be careful, and maybe not stay up. I’m glad it isn’t my task.

Hmmmmmm the 3Ms….With the budget he has had Mick as found some decent players ( although many not premier league standard and not with a premier league budget ) He has built from virtually nothing after Hoddle etc although if he had 60 million to spend I don’t think he would attract the players. He has old fashioned values and would rather buy 20 X 3 million pound players with lower wages tha 6 x 10 million pound players with big wages…

Jez only does what the board and now the owner tells him. He has a budget to stick to and there is only one man who can change that and that is the owner.

I think that Mr. Morgan is a football fan but is reluctant to really splash the cash when Liverpool are still in turmoil. Wolves would be very handy for proving that he can run a football club soundly, financially. This may then give him a head start when Liverpool are sold..( maybe not unlike what Sullivan and Gould have done at Birmingham and now they have West Ham!!! )He is not at Wolves to do the club any harm, more of a stepping stone to a bigger agenda!!!!!!!

Muppet’s record of signing foreign players shows they spend more time on the bench than the pitch. Even Milijas took a painfully long time to ‘earn’ a regular slot.

We have had all the spin of not doing a WBA, not making up the numbers, signing tried and tested british players, qulaity & experience etc etc. If this is our only signing then Morgan and the fat controller will have shown there intent and complete lack of ambition – there will be a backlash!!

But, he then goes and buys a player from Belgium. By the time he has ‘settled’ in and ready for action it will be the 2nd or 3rd week of the championship campiagn next year!

Give up Nathan????? Have a word with yourself. We should never give up as supporters and if we do shouldn’t bother attending games or supporting the team.

Yes, I am annoyed by lack of investment, performances and quality purchased. But nothing I can do as its not my job. My job is to support team and if I don’t do that I should be sacked with anyone else not doing their job.

I understand the grandson comment, put if we are prudent and debt free at least he will have a football team to support. Apparently there is only 4 teams which are debt free (Blues, West Brom, Scunthorpe and us) in the football league. So if they all go bust and that puts 2nd in the league by default. Let’s hope he defies his own ordinariness and signs real players appropriate to our needs.

The balance sheet is important, and will become even more so when, in the ensuing months, and next season, clubs actually go to the dogs/bust. There is a psychology, too, at Wolves, based on financial history; as if it stalks the corridors.

    I’ll be there bob wolf,

The season looks like its going to drift and drift if the sounds from the board room is anything to go by.

The way I see it there must be more to this then meets the eye. Morgan must realise that McCarthy is out of his depth. He is a 1 trick pony, no idea on how to manage in the Premiership. We have a championship side, playing players out of position. If we did stop up, the board should still sack him because who wants another season of struggle. His buys in the season have been woeful. But whos to blame,,,, abit early i say in terms of using the word blame as we are not relegated. But I am just disgusted that Moxey & Morgan spouted their bullish claims but not have backed it up with good premiership signing. Did MM give them a wishlist but SM & JM said no too expensive or is it the other way round. MM said what we got to spend and JM & SM said you got £18M to spend plus wages…. Something doesnt add up.

Wolves are lacking 3 players. LEFT BACK, MIDFIELDER & STRIKER. I bet we dont buy any others.

Question Castillo was a waste of a loan? Anyone agree….

Nathan Love your blogs I agree Wigan was not good, but not as bad as Birmingham. I know you can’t keep blaming refs but that ref needed to wear glasses not just for us but for wigan as well. Some of his decisions were appalling.(got the Stearman one right and the Wigan Player but that was about it. MM should try Vokes and Doyle think that would be a perfect partnership. Blake may be trying hard but it aint working. I will judge the new signing when i see him play cause apparently he is the bis! hope not like Franskowski (probably spelt wrong) The Hoff injured so he wont play. Hope it not Hennessy in goal he scares the life out of me not been the same since Bobby Mimms left us rather have Hanneman. Please don’t panic Nathan I am convinced we are going to stay up but only just.

Mcarthy will never attempt to sign premiership players cus with premier players comes premier abilities and premier points of view which he does not want to manage……thats one of the reasons we have a team made up of kids from the championship.

On Adam Johnson, the rumour is that we offered £6.5m which doesn’t meet Boro’s evaluation (of £10m). However, if true, it lays to rest the idea that Morgan will not splash the cash.

There’s also a rumour that Chelsea are now interested, if he fancies warming the bench at a Champions League club.

Finally, there’s a rumour that he has decided to stay put, because in the summer he’s a free agent, which means clubs will be able to give him a huge signing-on fee (instead of paying a transfer fee).

It’s all rumour, and we just don’t know. So ‘every man and his dog’ turns out to be Adam Johnson – possibly.

I couldn’t have put it better myself Nathan! You have hit the nails on their heads mate. As i have said before what the MMM do not say speaks volumes. What happens about team selection & performance aslo speaks volumes, the signings in the summer and their lack of appearances also speaks volumes, the lack of quality, also speaks volumes. I think every one who comments on here is absolutely fed up with the bull, spin, fine sentiments & half truths emanating from the Molinuex Management. As you pointed out that Moxey was quick to say that the club are financially viable. This implies that once again they will not spend, hence Mujinga Bia, it is a business, that comes first, they are not footballing people but accountants, & until there is a major shift in thinking & policy at Molinuex then once again this club is down make no bones about it!
They are playing right into the hands of the pundits who said at the start of the season that wolves will not last more than one season at this level unless they spend. Even now footbal commentators are stating that wolves need to spend to survive.
For all what has been said and done by us all it appears to have fell on very very deaf ears and closed minds!
I wonder what goes through the minds of MMM when us fans boo the team off and we leave well before the end of the match having paid a lot of hard earned cash to watch a championship team? Have they no empathy, pride or resepect for anyone, only there own ends?
Their lack of speaking publicly to the fans face to face shows they are running scared i think. Why not have an open forum where fans can ask the MMM questions? After all they rely on us more than we rely on them. Without the fans they would be nowt!
Not only do we need quality on the field but also a manager of proven ability.

I can’t believe some people agree with this utter dross. How does this guy keep getting editorial space? Every realistic fan’s point of view is that we are NOT in the relegation zone. We are NOT in debt. We HAVE had some great moments this season as well as some bad ones. The quality is there (see team that beat Tottenham) it is just motivation that’s not there half the time (see same team that lost to Wigan). No one said this was going to be easy and if we finished 17th this season then as far as I’m concerned it would be a huge success. Stop kidding ourselves. We are not ready to match the big boys on wages and such yet. And as for saying players like Surman lack quality then I have to question whether you actually watch the matches, and the little chance he has been given to prove himself yet. We’ll be fine as long as doom and gloom merchants such as yourself stay away.

People on here are totally clueless spouting off about the January transfer window. Name the Premiership clubs that have actually done any good business…. none is the answer.
There are going to be very few top drawer players available and no club will be getting rid until they have a replacement in place. Therefore all the deals will be done at the back end of next week. Wolves have obviously tried to prise Hunt and paper talk links us with players like Beattie but there is no truth in it.
We need to sign and I believe we will sign at least a couple of players but the quality of player for any club in the window will be questionable.

Nathan, great blog.I also agree with Noisy and Malta. If we want to stay in the Premiership, we have to buy in quality players in the transfer window, and there’s barely a week left.At the moment, we are a Championship club playing in a higher division, and from what I’ve seen this season, there are at least 4 Championship clubs who’d make as good, if not better a fist of it than us.
We urgently need creative players to augment Milijas, and the ones we need are a proven Premiership winger and similar midfielder, to provide our only striker worth the name with scoring chances. And Doyle ( for it is he, forget the others) needs another Premiership striker to assist him in scoring goals, because if we don’t score more goals than we are doing, we’re down anyway. It’s crucial that we buy someone who can change a game and carve out opportunities for the team.
Any two of Hunt/Adam Johnson, Beattie and O’Hara would seriously galvanise this club. And if Mujangi Bia finds himself the only addition to the squad, God help him. Woe betide him, if he has a bad first game in a losing Wolves side, and the Molineux “faithful” get at him, in their usual misplaced anger at the manager. He’ll rue the day he ever chose to come into English football. Or am I being unfair ? Not really, I’ll leave that to the boo-boys.
We have to spend proper money, NOW, on proven Premiership players. We have the commitment, now we need the class.

Correct me if I’m wrong (please do) but thinking about our last foray into the top tier.

Did we not have “Prem proven” players then?

Irwin Loads of games for Man U.
      Ince As above.
      Iversen Spurs veteran.
      Kennedy Played for Liverpool?
      Luzhny Well maybe just.
      Cort Newcastle wasn’t it?

Yes, these players were all with us because their club had already had their best years.
Thing is though they all had PREM EXPERIENCE didn’t they?
Now then, how did we get on with these prem experienced players in the side? Oh yes that’s right, relegated on 33 points.

Prem experienced players in our range on the market are similar to the above. If you want the really good players that will instantly make a difference then you will have to pay top dollar and top wages for them. Players like Hunt,O’Hara,Beattie for example.

Maybe next year IF we stay up but right now we will not attract these types of players because of where we are in the league, and being a new club to this league.

Please don’t get me wrong, I want to see some decent prem quality players in our shirt too! The only thing is I very much doubt we will be able to get them, at least not this season anyway, in the event we do stay up that is. Why? Simple and we all know it too. They will cost us too much money and most likely (maybe Hunt excepted) will come with the big I am attitude.

I think your point is very well made – but when people say ‘Premiership experience’ I suspect they’re just using it as code for expensive, top-drawer players. For example, if we paid £10m for Aidan McGeady, I don’t think anyone would complain.

Jones was denied the funds and could only afford little known imports(Camara) and has-beens (Iversen, Luzhny). McCarthy has spent more, but he only really splashed out on one individual, Doyle.

The talk pre-season from Morgan and Moxey was that we would invest to compete. Without 2 or 3 players in the £5m-£10m bracket, it doesn’t feel like they’ve delivered.

Is everyone conveniently forgetting that the higher a team finishes in the PL, the more revenue is earned by a the club! Finish in the bottom 3 and all you get are snippets from the PL and 2 years parachute payments with the possibility of gaining promotion in a years time – is this what Wolves fans want?
Personally I want Wolves to display some ambition with their player signings, splash the cash on a few quality type players and bring us PL safety by our own efforts and not because we are bad and others are even worse!
I agree with Nathan that Wolves signing an unknown player even on loan is NOT the way to remain in the Premier League and having accounts that show we are in the black impresses no one except accountants!
There is little point in being stable but being stagnant at the same time which is what Wolves have become over the years!
If Steve Morgan really has got his heart and soul into Wolves then lets see exactly how much because to date we have been buying players from Poundstretcher instead of Marks and Spencer. I do not expect us to buy players from Harrods or Selfridges although in the future that would be excellent news but to penny pinch, which is the reputation Wolves seem to have in football, will not get us anywhere.

Spread your risk and buy in a few promising but unproven players and everyone’s up in arms about lack of proven quality. Hiding to nothing.

Also is there anything wrong with staying debt free and having a financially well run club? I don’t think so if the alternative is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy every couple of years.

The main thing for me is the lack of quality we have in our side, I thought we would of signed 3 or 4 tried and tested (as Moxey said) premierleague players in the summer giving our side the quality and expirience needed for the premiership. For some reason It seems to me that we can’t atract these players to our club. We havn’t signed one single premiership player this season, only signing championship and unproven foreign players. Why did we decide to go for squad players?. Another thing is that Mick Mccarthy still doesnt know what our first team is, where Birmingham,Burnley who came to the premierleague with weaker sides and the majority of other premiership teams field 11 players that you can prodict nearly every week. Thers not going to be consistency in a side that gets changed every week. I don’t think Mick was right in his decision to rest 10 players against Man U I think it discraced the club and the fans Mick should of apologized to the fans as O’neil did when Villa did a similar thing in Europe, if a profesional footballer can’t play two games a week then there’s something wrong.

This season our main target is survival we have set our set ourselves a platform to build from in the January transfer window we need to get around 22 points from our next 17 games. Can we achieve that? I think it will be very hard as i can’t see us getting results against the top 4 clubs who are all pushing for the premierleague and europe and will see us as 3 points. I do no disagree with a word that you have said, most of us will agree that you are correct in this comment on the state of play at Wolves.

I really do not care about the Cup against Palace, the way they are playing they will clean us up on Saturday, or at least draw and thrash us at Selhurst Park
They have a striker in Darren Ambrose who I wish was on Wolves books, a very dangerous player.

Lets hope there is a god, and Wolves come up with at least one and hopfully two experienced players , on loan will do, But there is not much time left, and if we elect to ride out the rest of the Seaso without a decent signing, then we are finished….you know it, the supporters know it, and the Wolves Management know it.

I fear that Mr Morgan only has eyes for the team he loved as a boy, and through Wolves as a stepping stone, will succeed in his goal.

Just go and support somebody else and stop moaning! nine days left in the transfer window.

Yes, Mick makes some stupid decisions in terms of squad selection, i’m not disputing that.

Yes, we need a big name signing to boost moral and boost us up the table.

What we don’t need is moaning, groaning, fickle fans spreading their pessimistic vibes around the club.

I’m not ‘getting my gold-tinted glasses on and pretending everything is rosy’, nor happy clapping, simply getting behind my team and trying to keep positive in a bid to help the club’s strive for premiership survival.

Yes, there have been one or two medium profile transfers gone through, but, the chain reaction that usually happens in the last few days is maybe about to happen.
Mark my words the Steven Hunt saga is not yet over. It could be that we might not get him, but, I’d have thought we must be one of the favourites….and Hull MUST reduce that top six wage bill.
Most ridiculous offer of the window so far (if you can believe the scribes) West Ham £100m in debt offering Ruud van Nostrilhairs (thank you Paul Whitehouse) £100,000 a week.

Players who it was obvious would not be good enough last season have been kept on for the sole reason their wage level was acceptable to the management.Compare our record over the last few seasons to Stoke, Blues ,Wigan etc and it is poor. Are you honestly happy with that?

On the whole the players aren’t the problem, although a few are just not prem quality. The real problem has been Mick’s tactics:

    - At the start of the season he wanted to play with two wingers but denied them room to run at defences by narrowing the pitch
    - He bought in Halford to throw the ball long… to who?…neither Doyle nor SEB are target men
    - He bought in the Hoff, the tallest player in the prem, but he can’t jump and for someone his size is very poor in the air
    - He bought some quality players like Zubar and Castillo but have not given them a go
    - He waved the whiteflag at old trafford (unforgivable)
    - He took jarvis off instead of SEB when we went down to 10 men against wigan
    - He plays far too many players our of position and therefore the team lacks balance
    - It has taken him far too long to realise that Milijas has to play every game
    - He only knows 4-4-2 and gets done over by teams with 5 in midfield, there simply is no plan b
    - He made too many ‘squad’ signings in the summer

I saw wolves play in perth in pre-season and even for a pre-season game we were awful. Honestly we have rarely played better than that Perth game all season.

Understand that it has been tough being without Kightly but that just demonstrates even moreso Mick’s inability at this level. I actually think we have some good players and if we can add just one or two in Jan and replace Mick with a manager who is not so one dimensional tactically we stand a chance of finishing 16th or 17th.

Maltawolf, I am an accountant, and know the perils of overtrading. I look at other teams like Portsmouth, Leeds, Bradford, Bournemouth, Southampton, etc, and I am pleased that we are trying to do things in a planned way, trying to bring in players that can produce results over a longer term. Some of them will not be good enough, but that is the case wherever you look. Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are rightly held up as great examples of football managers, but have bought players over the years that did not achieve what they were bought for. Veron, Djemba Djemba, Nani, Tosic, Anderson have not been all that was hoped for, but no-one questions SAF over his purchases. That is with massive input.

We have to live within a budget at home, and football teams are no different.

Bullynine, Morgan has contributed little financially? He put thirty million pounds into the club at the time he bought it. That was hard cash, and not paper money with merely a journal entry to the Balance Sheet. Sir Jack insisted on that happening as a parting gift to the club he loves, and still got grief from many on here.

I would love more players to come in during the window. Not the type that will come in for one last pay-day though, and who will need to be replaced in another year or two.

Morgan has done very well out of this.He inherited a debt free club( Sir Jack wrote off the money due to him)and the Sky millions are pouring in.Contrast that with the position say at West Ham where Sullivan has inherited a debt laden club and yet they still trying to bring in players. Morgan has proved with Redrow and other businesses he builds long term success, and even when he has sold the business he has retained some shares in it; loyalty and responsibility. The recent purchase of Peel House in WOLVERHAMPTON not Liverpool shows ambition. Have you been to Fratton Park recently, Bilston Town would turn it down and they’ve been playing at Bantock Park!

Name the players we can realistically buy from Premiership teams this Transfer Window who will make a difference to us staying up, if you think we are not going to?

So far the names mentioned are:

Beattie – So far trhis season has scored two goals. Stoke will not let him leave, as he is in their squad week after week. Has an apprent attitude problem.

Hunt – Hull will not want to sell him to a relegation rival. Only a huge offer will probably tempt them. How much would you realistically pay? More than has supposedly been offered? Is he REALLY worth more?

Johnson – Wants to see his contract out, and then take all of the funds from his Bosman move to a top six team. Natural left-footers bring balance, and he will be much sought after.

Gardner – Life long Blues fan, as are his family. Untried really at Prem level, and has a history of injuries. Is he really worth a punt after a long lay-off this time? Will he be the same player as before the injury?

Robbie Keane – Come on now. The signing on fee would be way up there, and he is on megabucks. Tottenham don’t seem in a hurry to offload him anyway.

Reo-Coker – Would be a good signing, but with Gardner gone will Martin O’Neill let him go without a fight. (I would love to see him sign for us, but just can’t see it happening.)

Other players linked such as Ledley, Killgallon, Beckford, McGinn, etc have no Prem experience.

Like I said earlier, please name names for players who:

      Would be released.
Are better than what we have.
      Would be realistically priced.
      Would have “Premiership Experience.”
Who would be willing to move to a newly promoted club involved in the relegation zone, as is usual with such teams.

Many of the comments on this blog mirror those which would have been on the Albion blog at this time last year. The owner and directors of both clubs steadfastly refuse to live beyond and supporters who had been euphoric about promotion a few months before suddenly have to face the fact that our teams can’t compete. You look at Birmingham a club of similar size to the Wolves and Albion and they have taken a different view. Barry Ferguson and Lee Bowyer , two players who would have given the Wolves the experience and quality they lack but it’s probably fair to assume that neither the Wolves or Baggies would pay the wages they can command. The way you run a football club is a difficult call. It’s come off for the Blues but clubs like Portsmouth and Hull are in big trouble and even United and Liverpool have unsustainable debt levels. I don’t think Mr Morgan would take over the liabilities of Liverpool and though a rich man probably could not afford to , so I think you are being a bit unfair on him when it is suggested that he is using Wolves as a stepping stone.

That said, i do think the Wolves PR machine needs to be more careful about what they feed us Wolves fans… we will take any scrap of hope and run with it. Morgan mustn’t for eg haphazardly mention that we’re not here to make up the numbers, Mick n Moxey stating we’re gunning for lots of premiership experience, even Bully giving us a “5 years path to Glory” hit…

lets stay grounded, and 3Ms I just hope you are doing everything in your power to do whats best for this club.

another quality signing with proven premier experience by the 3 m’s.oh yes! jez we really learned from our last brief stint in the premiership and is precisely the reason i refused to stump up the cash for my season ticket(before anyone moans i have only not had a season ticket for 1 out of the last 17 years)as i knew it was gonna be the same old story.this failure to invest in the sufficient quality will cost us and its a shame because we do have some quality young players who just needed some proven premier experience to guide them but the money has been wasted on players who just are not up to the task i.e; halford, berra, maerhoffer,(although not given proper chance)surman.iwelumo, stearman and seb just not good enough in the big league.hope i’m wrong but without a proven premiership goalscorer(beattie)a left back and a creative midfielder we will struggle. the only good thing is that there are a lot of poor teams in the premier league this season so who knows?

hope this kid can be the spark we need to ignite our season(don’t mind humble pie) he’s supposed to be quick and we need someone direct who isn’t afraid to take players on and provide our strikers with some quality service but please mick if you’re gonna play 2 wingers lets see a target man (hoff or iwelumo)to get the best out of either of these 2 strikers we need to get down the flanks and give them a chance to get goals.
