It’s Deja Vu for Albion in the cup
Friday 22nd January 2010, 9:10AM GMT.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill feels a sense of Deja Vu with Newcastle United in the fourth round as the Baggies dare to dream of repeating cup successes gone by.
So here we go again, taking a look at this weekend’s game against opponents we now know so well. In this day and age of reducing our carbon footprint, we should have offered them a lift back from Newcastle on Monday.
I know people in recent years have attempted to devalue the FA Cup, but for me it is still a competition I look forward to. Away from the pressure of trying to get league points, I find it easier to enjoy cup games and the memories created from our cup run a few seasons ago will stay with me forever.
Its one of those situations where as a fan you say “if we go out we can concentrate on the league,” quickly followed by “a good cup run can help breed confidence.” It’s this split thinking that helps me look at tomorrow’s game against the Magpies in a relaxed mood. It’s a kind of ‘lets see what happens,’ but I am not going to be to upset or overly joyous either way.
Due to the way tickets are allocated in FA Cup games, our home ties can often have a strange feel to them. For example, tomorrow’s game will see Newcastle fans take the whole of the Smethwick End and it means there is a totally different atmosphere within the stadium.
Similar to how Wolves fans grumbled a few seasons ago, when under instruction from the police, the club allowed us to have their home seats for a pie and a pint. Amusing as it was at the time, I do see their point.
‘The Smethwick Enders’ are arguably the most vociferous of our home support, although this season has seen a re-emergence of the Brummie Road Roar, but when these fans are dispersed amongst the other three stands the atmosphere suffers.
It has led to many fans now preferring away games in the competition and explains the take-up of tickets throughout the country by fans travelling to other grounds.
Anyway onto the game and Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has hinted at making a number of changes to the team we played on Monday night. He wants to rest some key players, so they remain fresh for the league and I wonder how our head coach Roberto Di Matteo views both the competition and this game.
There are a number of fringe players who would like to be involved and it will be interesting to see if we will see the likes of goalkeeper Dean Kiely, Chris Wood and Shelton Martis involved.
But the FA Cup is a competition that remains close to our gaffer’s heart, having won it twice as a player and I would not be surprised if we see him field the strongest possible team available. Plus what formation will he chose to go with? The 4-5-1 worked well on Monday, but there could be a change back to a 4-4-2 as we are at home.
Either way, I am in the camp that wants us to progress in the competition. You never know, if we get through to the next round we might even get to go to Molineux again.
Pie and a pint anyone?

Morning Jarrod,
I’m with you in regards to my outlook on the Cup. It’s a nice day out, it’s more relaxed and even though everyone would rather win, you’re never really gutted if you do lose.
I prefer away matches in general, but away matches in the Cup are fantastic. Going to grounds you hardly ever get chance to go to in particular.
The picture above reminded me of one of the best away matches I’ve ever been to, Bristol Rovers in the Cup 2 seasons ago.
Penned in a stand no bigger than gnats testi, getting completely soaked, freezing and watching us win handsomely…..bloomin’ brilliant!!
We’re having to sit in the Brummie tomorrow, so at least there will be 4 of us singing in there!!
“GOING DOWN THE BRUMMIE ROAD, TO GET SOME PEACE AND QUIET!!” ;-)

Hello Tez,
All I know is that we’re on Row WW tomorrow, my old seat in the Brummie was on MM, so I presume I’m on THE back row, or as good as!
I’ll keep an eye out for you though.
We managed to get a beer at half time at Bristol Rovers……really lived the dream that day!

The so called Smethwick should show more respect to the Brummie.80% are ex brummie rd anyway, mostly from Westbrom.I was born in smethwick but since 1961 have allways been in the Brummie, except for odd games. It happend at the wolves they moved to the south bank.So lets forgot this nonsence and remember we are all Baggies fans.

Just one to enjoy I think. Would like to see Tex get a run out though, and Cox deserves the nod, so would like to see how Bednar and Cox works, with Tex replacing Brunt. Wouldn’t change the back line.

Morning bomber, gtreatr blog again mate, got my ticket next to you !!!! I think we’ve all got opinions on the squad tommorrow, id love to see cox and ish start, only because having seen the above pic it reminded me how good that partnership was and for me cox’s game resembles super kevs. It would also be good to see tex and koren get a good run out, but like you i’m just going to see what comes and hopefully be entertained. On another note i see ipswich are charging £33 for tuesday night so along with travel etc thats a dear night out. apparantly we’ve only sold 200 tickets !!!! Anyway i’m havin £200 on wba to win 2-1 LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing that worries me about this game is that there may be a few scores to settle after Monday’s game. I would certainly give our best player Jara a break as he did get a bit involved on Monday. I see that a few contributors are assuming that we will revert to a 4-4-2 but I think against Newcastle at least , the formation should be as Monday. On the evidence of Monday no one can accuse of being negative at Newcastle where we created far more chances with Bednar on his own than we have with two strikers in recent games. I was pleased to see R

Reference contribution No. 6 I was before my computer freaked about to type that I was pleased to see Robert Koren back in the team . He was hardly seen in the first half but played well in the second half. He hasn’t played much recently due to his hernia and is bound to be a bit rusty. I fancy him to get a couple tomorrow.

WHY DOES COX DESERVE A START?
In his last 8 games the kid has done absolutly
nothing apart from run around like a headless
chicken,if anyone deserves to start then its
Chris Wood.
The atmosphere at the Hawthorns is terrible
and thats why I dont go anymore, the only stand
thats sings is the Smethick end.
I hope Roberto Di Matteo plays some of the
fringe players for the F.A. cup game i.e.
HABER,MARTIS,TEIXIERA,and WOOD.

Hey Jarrod,
I’ve just started blogging about the Baggies (http://wba.theoffside.com/), and I was wondering how you got your blog on this site.
