Ebanks-Blake to start in cup tie
Friday 22nd January 2010, 12:00PM GMT.
Mick McCarthy will include Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in a Wolves team against Crystal Palace tomorrow that the manager believes could win the FA Cup.
Ebanks-Blake has won his battle to keep his place in a bid to end his 10-game drought, against a side the striker has happy goalscoring memories.
The double Championship Golden Boot winner gets the chance to end his barren run in the fourth round, facing opposition that he scored Wolves’ fastest goal for 33 years at Molineux in a 2-1 victory in October 2008, later netted the penalty winner in a season-reviving 1-0 success at Selhurst Park last March.
McCarthy said: “Sylvan has got every chance of trying to score, because he’ll be playing. If he gets his goal, then great, but if he doesn’t but plays well and we win, then no problem.”
It’s been 50 years since Wolves won the FA Cup and McCarthy believes a good run now can only help them in their quest to stay in the Premier League.
He said: “We could win the FA Cup – we’re not going to win the Premier League. Mind you, finishing 17th will be like winning it, because it’s vital to us.
“People say it’s a hindrance or distraction, but I see it as an important game we need to win and we’ll be going full tilt to win.
“I think it can enhance our fight to stay in the Premier League. If we can beat Crystal Palace then we can take care of the Premier League games coming up.
“The FA Cup generates excitement the further you go and we can pick up. We’re playing a good Championship side who no doubt under Neil Warnock will be motivated to come here to turn us over.
“I’ve no doubt they’ll be wound up to fever pitch coming here. They’ll see us as a side near the bottom ready to take on but because we’re a Premier League side, they’ll also see us as a scalp. With everything happening there regarding the finances, they’ll want another FA Cup tie for the extra revenue.
“But, if we win, we’ll feel much better about playing Liverpool on Tuesday.”
Wolves midfielders Michael Kightly and Dave Edwards have suffered minor reactions to their ankle injuries and didn’t train yesterday.

….and I might win Wimbledon this year. Get real, Mick. We all know that we’ll do well to beat Palace tomorrow. They are of a similar standard to the current Wolves squad.

Correct Descision.
We should be able to create a few chances for SEB here and a goal would be a massive boost for him; one which he can carry forward to the prem.
He’s definately got it in him and whilst he hasn’t been at his best and could be accused of naivety so far this season, he has been unlucky as well.
Keep at it!
I think we will struggle to beat Palace if we are even a little below our best. They have been on a good run with an UNCHANGED TEAM and are full of confidence, they also have NOTHING TO LOSE BY GOING FOR IT! That said, the Cup is NOT OUR MAIN PRIORITY but the winning habit is a great confidence builder, ask any Bluenose!!!
He is lucky to keep his place and I would say that he definitely needs a goal or two in order to get a place against Liverpool. His finishing has been woeful in the top league but hopefully this game will give him some much needed confidence.
Here is the side that I would put out tomorrow:-
Hennessey Foley Zubar Berra Ward Bia Henry Milijas Jarvis Ebanks-Blake Vokes

play the team in position and with a positive starting line up and we will proberly win !!
it dont take a genius mick really…
play wingers on the wing and we might give seb some service to miss two score one !
play defenders to do there jobs and defend mark players out the game. (pref zubar)
Play midfielders that do differnt jobs on the pitch, Henry def mid, Milijas playmaker. (442 diamond)
play doyle upfront, with seb if he struggles take him off at half time. SIMPLES
Also from what ive seen on youtube of this winger, he could be the real deal so give him plenty of the ball V PALACE and lets see what he can do before terry connor trains it out of him lol

SEB is really short of confidence in front of goal and hasn’t suddenly become a bad striker overnight. A goal from open play will give him a real boost even if its deflects in off his backside!! I that happens tomorrow against Palace, that will hopefully give him a positive mind to go on in the next Premiership game he is picked. I really believe SEB will put this right and if the Wolves fans keep the faith, I’m sure he will deliver. Go for it SEB!!
At last someone talking sense. SEB, like any sriker, cannot survive on scraps.
If the manager would sort out the defence we wouldn’t need to score two goals in a game just to draw it. Birmingham don’t score many goals, the difference is they don’t concede many.
Get the defence sorted, start getting some clean sheets, our confidence will go up and we’ll start playing better.
Worrying thing is SEB has looked off the pace and lazy. I for one would love to see him score but feel he would benefit from a stint in the reserves, Chris has looked sharper. SEB should have been taken off after 20 mins last week it was obvious he was having ANOTHER shocker. Typical mad Mick, some palyers are untouchable and others are dropped like a stone – reagrdless of the effect it has on our results. MICK IS ALWAYS RIGHT – HE’LL PROVE IT WHATEVER THE COST.
I don’t mind him starting
If he bags a goal or two might be the confidence booster he needs to kick start his premier league season.
Just read another report in E and S about new lad.
MM states that Jarvis and Kites are the only other out and out wingers available and Jarvis can’t maintain the high energy performances week in week out that the position dictates!!! That is because he is having to track back constantly and cover for our weekness at left back…….get a decent defender to defen and let Jarvis do what he is best at and attack…….widen the pitch if you play with wingers.
I love this club but comments from above are drivel at the moment!
Good comment.
we lost alot of our positives from last years attack being our wingers beating there full backs and putting a delivery in the box went when we decided to shorten the pitch so much. i know we up against better opposition but still think sometimes ‘the best form of defence can is attack’.
Leftback is a must though mick even if its just a loan signing !!!
What im gettin at is if we had started all our games with the idea of winning them all with a young hungry attack minded team would we be any worse off than we are now ???
No we wouldn’t
And e would have had a bit more confidence because we would hav scored more goals
I can not for the life of me understand the logic in narrowing the pitch when wolves play with Jarvis and Kightley…It doesn’t make sense
We hve no space wecan’t get behind teams, the only reason it was done was for Halford to use his long throw!!! And MM doesn’t play him anymore!!!
Some of the decisions this season look like panic last minute decisions. How any manager is not prepared to play his strongest team every game is pathetic, and te excuse of “to many games in a short time” is pathetic. Play the strongeat team every game from the start, if a player gets tired take him off and replace him with cover in that position.
Oh yeh and please tell MM that Foley is not a winger
Report abuse
Totally agree.
Also even when Halford was in the side the long throw wasn’t really working was it?
Another terrible plan that hasn’t worked. It’s on a par with long balls hoofed up to 5 foot something strikers and expecting them to win the ball ahead of 6 foot something defenders GENIUS!!!!
Note to Mick and whoever else agreed to narrowing the pitch being a great idea.
We are Wolves, NOT STOKE. Our game is ALL about quick wingers.
Jarvis, Kightly, Froggatt, Daley (the odd time he was fit), Newton etc.
the list is long but the end result was nearly always the same. Quick dash down the wing, beat the defender, cross…goal (ok not that simple but you get the picture).
Truth is we were too concerned about the damage the other teams’ wingers could do (Lennon etc.), but didn’t give much thought that Jarvis or Kightly could do exactly the same to them.
If we do stay up the first action should be to put then pitch back to normal.

Put aside transfer targets, tactics, player positions. I’m really getting alarmed at MMs general management ability.
Just the other day he said about SEB playing versus Palace:
“But if you’re asking whether I’m going to play him on Saturday and beyond, then I’m not going to say because it’s not for public consumption”
So what’s todays news all about. He’s just told the world!
Then in the same report about SEB he said:
“I don’t talk to him much but I can tell it does (hurt) – you can see the disappointment etched in his face”
Isn’t the manager supposed to talk to his players?
But then he goes on to appear to contradict himself again:
“I put my arm around them all the time to encourage them and to be better”
Now Morgan might not have the best football brains in the world but his success in major PLCs must give him the ability to spot this dodgy man management/lack of consistency
Maybe, just maybe time is running out for MM?
PS – good luck SEB – get stuck in and bag a few

We are playing Palace tomorrow, and I predict a Palace win.
Can someone tell me, if we are going to play our strongest team, why Doyle should not be playing !!!!
If we think resting him is the answer, I ask why ??
If this young man, an International, can’t train throughout the week, and is unable to play in more than one 90 minute football game,
why the hell are we paying him 25,000 pound + a week….Its a joke.

After alot of thinking, my problem lies mostly lies in Mick’s tactics and starting line ups.
How anyone can start giving Moxey grief again is beyond me.. The Wolves board and chairman have decided with OUR TEAM being one of the only big clubs in the prem and fizzy pop NOT IN THE RED, it wouldnt be a good idea to risk that right now and IF we stop up we could be in for the pick of the players next year (BIG IF TRUE)
But at worst we get relegated, still no heavy wages, no pre madona’s, parachute payments and some good assets with a years prem experiance… IM HAPPY WITH THAT.
NOW lets stop slating the clubs ambitions cos there long term not short term and GET BEHIND THE TEAM.

MM has surpassed his tactical nouse and naivety by keep playing Ebanks when he is so completely out of touch. Certain other players seem to get dropped quick enough. Others carry on regardless, safe in the knowledge he will slot them in somewhere. Until MM can recognise the difference betweeen a square peg and a round hole we are doomed. This is not slating the club it is simply stating the b……. obvious. How can this be the correct decision?…SEB had been given more than enough chance to turn his fortunes around,…MM should apply the same rules for all the players, as he has gone on record saying if you dont play well you loose your place, i.e. Milijas. why not start with Vokes, as according to MM he came back from Leeds full of confidence and 2 yards quicker!,..or is it MM’s genuis plan to leave him on the bench until that confidence and speed have gone!..clever Mick, very clever!!

I agree with plenty of posts so far who say SEB does not become a bad player overnight.
The thing is though IMO, this should really be his last chance tomorrow, I amongst others will be willing him on to score, he’s a MUCH better player than we have seen of late. We all know that, but I fear his confidence is shot!!!
So if he doesn’t score, never mind Mick saying if we win and he plays well etc. above. Yeah I’m sure SEB will be delighted if we win but yet again he didn’t score against a lower league team (no disrespect to Palace but technically they are). He’s a STRIKER Mick, they live to score goals and SEB loves scoring!
God forbid I’m right(hope not)but the best thing for SEB then would be a loan spell with a Championship team to get his confidence back which is lacking but can be found again, he would have buried that Wigan chance last season we all know he would.
Playing in the reserves is NOT the same, he needs proper matches to get back to the striker we have loved for the last 2 seasons.
Mick is at fault for how SEB is IMO, when he scored that penalty against Villa he looked so pleased. He was punching the air and I thought YES, now lets have it next game. Unfortunately next game SEB was dropped??!!? Now that was an unbelievably stellar piece of thinking wasn’t it Mick?
Come on SEB, show Palace the door.

Whilst I agree Seb has not been 100% lets face it if you have crap service then you will struggle. It’s not all down to him, what have we created this season, very little. We need to improve our creativity, lets face it we have nearly always scored from free kicks etc, that says it all.

In 1960 when we last won the FA Cup the headline in very large letters on the front page of the Exoress and Star was “OURS AGAIN!” (We previously won it in 1949). Because of bad luck and stupitidy in drawing our last league game we came second and missed winning the double by one single point.
I wonder what the headline will be this time.

I advised on this site before the Season started that an associate close to Wolves told me we would secure Doyle, which I published when all posts were crying that we had lost him.
I have been advised today that Wolves plan a major announcment mid next week of a new signing and one new on loan, and while he was not prepared to advise the name, the outlay in total will be around 5 million, so it is my guess that it will be Hunt.
Sit back and wait, looks like McCarthy may have saved the Club just in time.
