Wolves make second bid for Hunt

Wolves make second bid for Hunt

Wolves have made a second bid for winger Stephen Hunt as they try to tempt Premier League rivals Hull into selling.

Sources close to the deal have confirmed Wolves have lodged another offer, which is believed to be around £3million.

Hull are determined to hang on to the Republic of Ireland international, who is believed to be keen on the move. But their hand could be forced if the 28-year-old decides to submit a transfer request.

Boss Mick McCarthy admits his January team-strengthening is in the hands of the selling clubs after hinting a striker is his other main target. The club have bid for two players, one of which is for Hunt.

Wolves have also enquired about Leeds hot-shot Jermaine Beckford, although Newcastle are in pole position for the 26-year-old.

McCarthy is also keeping tabs on Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara and weighing up whether to bid for Villa midfielder Craig Gardner.

The manager said: “We’ve got bids in for players, but we can’t do any business without someone else’s permission.

“You put bids in and you’re reliant on people accepting them or knocking them back and if that’s the case, we move on to someone else. But we’re still hoping of signing someone.”

McCarthy remained non-committal on the chances of Beckford joining Wolves. The striker is out of contract in the summer and would cost upwards of £1.5million.

The Wolves boss said: “Us and how many other have been linked with him? Do you think his agent might be working overtime?”

But McCarthy hinted at the need for a striker, with Andy Keogh and Stefan Maierhofer injured.

He said: “If Wayne Rooney got injured at Manchester United or Liverpool lost Fernando Torres, or Tottenham lost Jermain Defoe, they would suffer, and we’d be the same here if we lost Kevin Doyle or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.”

McCarthy is also keen to assess a couple of trialists, after the freeze denied him the chance to see Toulouse’s Guinea international winger Fode Mansare.

He said: “If the opportunity arises, we’d like to have a look at a couple of lads from France and Belgium.”

We have needed another flying winger since last season, when we lost Kightly, and he hasn’t been fully fit since. I justy hope that we can sign Hunt as he will earn his pay with us. Jarvis can play either wing so it would give us flexibility.

I am angry that we lost the advantage of our wingers by reducing the pitch to the size of a tennis court, but we can alter that back again next season.

We don’t need anymore players of the same average standard that we have now. Look at the players who have been found out in the Prem. as average – Blake and kightly and our fullbacks for example. If we are going to be better that Hull, Portsmouth and Burnley [or Bolton, Stoke, Blackburn] in May we need to spend the sort of money we spent on Doyle. £m’s = quality. MM don’t take a risk or you will be down the road and Sammy Lee will be in your office!

hunt is a proven premier winger. we dont have “average” standard, SEB has been class this season (ive been evry game but 2) nd stearman nd ward r quality, i honestly think they r. so let mick do his job as this is a class team (much better than 5 years ago!)

I’m not sure you know what class is. How many goals has SEB got. ONE I think, thats not what I call class. I agree Hunt will be better than Jarvis who can run but cant cross. Also Hunt can score goals which only Doyle can. So perhaps he will be ok but we need more quality at left back if we are going to stay up. Ward would not get in another Prem team unless Super Mick was the manager!

Some great sounds coming from wolves at the mo. Hunt, Gardner and O’hara all great, solid players with experience. Hunt is strong, quick and also a ball winner. Not sure how real the Beckford rumours are but not sure if i’d want him. Yes he has scored 20 goals so far but its a big step up and he seems to have a huge ego which might upset the dressing room if he thinks he’s the ‘big i am’.

Look, I ain’t sure about this so no calling me a muppet ! A lot of posts recommending Jamie O’Hara on loan. Wasn’t the number of loans in the Premiership changed to a maximum of TWO ? In which case we rule ourselves out with Mancienne and Castillo.
(I’m aware of the 3 club rule for O’Hara)

    • Jay

The two loan rule only applies to players from other Premier League clubs. Castillo’s parent club is Red Star Belgrade so should we be interested in O’Hara the only issue will be the fact that we would be the third club he had played for this season.

I saw something yesterday which more or less indicates that we would be allowed to get o’Hara. The reason is Pompey who are the second club he has played for, have been forced to send him back through no fault of the player and therefore Wolves could prosper!

I think MM has recognised that we need goals, and apart from Miljas there is limited creativity. He must beleive that with hunt, jarvis/kighty on either wing we will put better balls in the box, get behind defences and create more chances.
I still think we need another striker, experienced central defender ,and a more attacking midfielder, as again apart from Miljas they are all defensive minded. although Craddock and Berra have looked better in recent games, they lack pace and dont read the game as well as they should and often get caught out. Their distribution is also poor, just hoofing the ball up all the time.

    • John De Wolf

Agree about Craddock and Berra. They flatter to deceive. Our defensive record isn’t great, and they’re distribution is poor.

I can’t deny Berra’s done ok this season but i don’t rate him. He’s clumsy, slow, and poor with the ball.

I’d rather see Zubar alongside Craddock. However, I also think Stearman and Mancienne are better than Berra.

The reason why they did not buy him in the summer was that a winger was not the priority as Kightly and Jarvis would have been first choices. Unfortunately due to injuries what we have seen of Kightly is nothing like what we have seen previously.

In the humble opinion of a Baggie. Eastwood’s Rubbish talks a lot of sense. Hull, like Portsmouth and quite a few others have got in an almighty mess by spending money they don’t have. Do you want Wolves to be like them and forced to sell off your best players? Of course you could have outbid Hull in the summer for Hunt. Many of our fans have attacked Jeremy Peace for the same reason. Would they be as vocal if we (or you) were going bust in the next couple of seasons. For both clubs the saying ‘been there got the T shirt’ applies. Do we want to go there again?

As for Beckford, I wouldn’t go for him, yes he has pace but what about his first touch & more importantly his attitude for me he represents too much of a gamble, though he is avaiable at the right price, for me Benjani or Benni McCarthy would be better options & are proven at this level.

Did anyone see the Man City game last night? Benjani was excellent and he’s hardly played this year. I’d love to get him on loan, he did a great job at Portsmouth. I’m bet he’s on about £50K a week, which may be a problem!

I like Benni McCarthy too, but does he have the appetite for a relegation scrap? If he’s any good why isn’t he playing at B’Burn. At 32 he may be past his best. Beattie would also be a good shout but will Stoke sell to a rival?

As for Beckford he may be worth a punt. But I hear he’s not got a great attitude and I would want to protect the team spirit at all costs. Also can we expect him to make the step up and score the goals we need? It’s a gamble, we only need to look at Ebanks to see it’s not that easy!

I would love Hunt but if Blues are now in for him, do we stand a chance? I think we desperately need cover on the wings. I’ve said it before but could we not stretch to a loan move for Bentley? How about Pennant?

I’d like O’Hara and/or Ledley but I see them as central midfielders and we have one of the best in that position in Milijas! It’s down the flanks where we lack penetration.

I think one of the reasons Ebanks’s struggled this season is due to the lack of service from the wings, i don’t think we have scored from a cross in open play this season. Or have we?

A striker and a winger are priority. If we can bring in quality, I’m confident we’ll finish above three other teams.

I’m not sure if Hunt is on as much as is quoted on here, but even if he is that’s still a workable wage for a player of his ability IMO. Not only would he provide decent crosses from the wing but also as he has already shown can score them himself too, 5 goals so far this season is it? We seem to be replicating Stoke of last season so far, so we may as well continue. A quality striker (Beattie) and a quality winger (Etherington) transformed their season.

Nobody wants to go stupid on the wages front BUT ultimately, if Hunt contributed to us staying up it would be money well spent surely?
I really hope this deal will happen as it’s just what the Wolves need and would I’m sure prove to many Wolves fans including me that we are serious about staying up this time!
