Wolves make second bid for Hunt
Tuesday 12th January 2010, 11:37AM GMT.
Wolves have made a second bid for winger Stephen Hunt as they try to tempt Premier League rivals Hull into selling.
Sources close to the deal have confirmed Wolves have lodged another offer, which is believed to be around £3million.
Hull are determined to hang on to the Republic of Ireland international, who is believed to be keen on the move. But their hand could be forced if the 28-year-old decides to submit a transfer request.
Boss Mick McCarthy admits his January team-strengthening is in the hands of the selling clubs after hinting a striker is his other main target. The club have bid for two players, one of which is for Hunt.
Wolves have also enquired about Leeds hot-shot Jermaine Beckford, although Newcastle are in pole position for the 26-year-old.
McCarthy is also keeping tabs on Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara and weighing up whether to bid for Villa midfielder Craig Gardner.
The manager said: “We’ve got bids in for players, but we can’t do any business without someone else’s permission.
“You put bids in and you’re reliant on people accepting them or knocking them back and if that’s the case, we move on to someone else. But we’re still hoping of signing someone.”
McCarthy remained non-committal on the chances of Beckford joining Wolves. The striker is out of contract in the summer and would cost upwards of £1.5million.
The Wolves boss said: “Us and how many other have been linked with him? Do you think his agent might be working overtime?”
But McCarthy hinted at the need for a striker, with Andy Keogh and Stefan Maierhofer injured.
He said: “If Wayne Rooney got injured at Manchester United or Liverpool lost Fernando Torres, or Tottenham lost Jermain Defoe, they would suffer, and we’d be the same here if we lost Kevin Doyle or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.”
McCarthy is also keen to assess a couple of trialists, after the freeze denied him the chance to see Toulouse’s Guinea international winger Fode Mansare.
He said: “If the opportunity arises, we’d like to have a look at a couple of lads from France and Belgium.”

We have needed another flying winger since last season, when we lost Kightly, and he hasn’t been fully fit since. I justy hope that we can sign Hunt as he will earn his pay with us. Jarvis can play either wing so it would give us flexibility.
I am angry that we lost the advantage of our wingers by reducing the pitch to the size of a tennis court, but we can alter that back again next season.
We don’t need anymore players of the same average standard that we have now. Look at the players who have been found out in the Prem. as average – Blake and kightly and our fullbacks for example. If we are going to be better that Hull, Portsmouth and Burnley [or Bolton, Stoke, Blackburn] in May we need to spend the sort of money we spent on Doyle. £m’s = quality. MM don’t take a risk or you will be down the road and Sammy Lee will be in your office!
hunt is a proven premier winger. we dont have “average” standard, SEB has been class this season (ive been evry game but 2) nd stearman nd ward r quality, i honestly think they r. so let mick do his job as this is a class team (much better than 5 years ago!)
I’m not sure you know what class is. How many goals has SEB got. ONE I think, thats not what I call class. I agree Hunt will be better than Jarvis who can run but cant cross. Also Hunt can score goals which only Doyle can. So perhaps he will be ok but we need more quality at left back if we are going to stay up. Ward would not get in another Prem team unless Super Mick was the manager!
fingers crossed
Report abuse
Showing serious intent and being lever it’s like haggling start low and go up slowly till you reach their breaking point. I’m telling you this now, I would love it if we sign Hunt
Report abuse
Yea i hope Hull will see sense and let him come they need the cash and it seams he would like to renew his partnership with Doyle.
No to Becford Would like to see O’Hara come in on loan. just hope its not all paper talk again. Am Keeping the Faith.
Would be a top signing, come on moxey – get it sorted !
I think he could be coming along Wanderers Way, been on Hulls local Newspapers website and their is a lot of turmoil as we all know, just a matter of time before that Transfer Request goes in from Hunt me thinks.
REQUIRED:-
One Stephan Hunt or Joe Ledley
One Jamie O’Hara
One Jermaine Beckford
Business Completed and Wolves stay up.
We need to add some spice to the team, currently we are all very much the same in temperament, well that’s how it appears to me.
Good luck to Jez and Mick and here is hoping!!
Trust me, we DO NOT want Jermaine Beckford. We’ve got better options already than him. Would rather see us sign David Nugent tbh! The ideal striker would been Benni McCarthy, but doubt he would come to us!
I agree and would prefer to could get Nugent or Benni McCarthy. Either would be good moves.
Also agree Beckford needs lots of chances to put the ball in the net. However, his style of football may just suit the PM.
My priority would be Stephan Hunt and Jamie O’Hara. They would be excellent signings. :-)
I agree for £2mil I’d take Nugent anyday
Report abuse
your right beckford has an attitude problem and thinks he,s better than what he is yes he,s got plenty of goals this season but so did blakey and look whats happening to him now we need to sign a few players to keep us up and them players are o,hara hunt gardner nugent shorey? i know its probably asking to much for us to sign all these players but if we did we would virtualy be garanteed prem football next season,,,WE ARE WOLVES,,,in mad mick we dont trust,,,ilk
Report abuse
I think you are right beckford is the same as blake they both think they are better than they are. Also both I think are Lazy.
Some great sounds coming from wolves at the mo. Hunt, Gardner and O’hara all great, solid players with experience. Hunt is strong, quick and also a ball winner. Not sure how real the Beckford rumours are but not sure if i’d want him. Yes he has scored 20 goals so far but its a big step up and he seems to have a huge ego which might upset the dressing room if he thinks he’s the ‘big i am’.
UTW
Report abuse
Beckford wouldn’t be a good signing, he scores goals but my mates who are season ticket holders at Leeds reckon he needs 20 chances for every goal. Thats something you don’t get in the Premier League!!
Where abouts in Leeds are you from?
Talking to yourself is a sign of madness LeedsWolf!!
The second is talking to you, Wilmslow wolf.
Horsforth mate, how about you? Glad to hear I’m not exciled up here on my own!!
Garforth. Thats 3 Wolves fans i know in Leeds now!
You get to many gameS?
Look, I ain’t sure about this so no calling me a muppet ! A lot of posts recommending Jamie O’Hara on loan. Wasn’t the number of loans in the Premiership changed to a maximum of TWO ? In which case we rule ourselves out with Mancienne and Castillo.
(I’m aware of the 3 club rule for O’Hara)
The two loan rule only applies to players from other Premier League clubs. Castillo’s parent club is Red Star Belgrade so should we be interested in O’Hara the only issue will be the fact that we would be the third club he had played for this season.
I saw something yesterday which more or less indicates that we would be allowed to get o’Hara. The reason is Pompey who are the second club he has played for, have been forced to send him back through no fault of the player and therefore Wolves could prosper!
I think MM has recognised that we need goals, and apart from Miljas there is limited creativity. He must beleive that with hunt, jarvis/kighty on either wing we will put better balls in the box, get behind defences and create more chances.
I still think we need another striker, experienced central defender ,and a more attacking midfielder, as again apart from Miljas they are all defensive minded. although Craddock and Berra have looked better in recent games, they lack pace and dont read the game as well as they should and often get caught out. Their distribution is also poor, just hoofing the ball up all the time.
Agree about Craddock and Berra. They flatter to deceive. Our defensive record isn’t great, and they’re distribution is poor.
I can’t deny Berra’s done ok this season but i don’t rate him. He’s clumsy, slow, and poor with the ball.
I’d rather see Zubar alongside Craddock. However, I also think Stearman and Mancienne are better than Berra.
Berra is a lot quicker than that Dutch donkey John de Wolf was.
John de Wolf was a wolves legend! Don’t go shooting your mouth off hoggard
Report abuse
HEY SEB HOW MQNY GAMES DID DE WOLF PLAY AND HOW MUCH DID HE COST? MIND I DID SEE HIM SCORE A COUPLE OR WAS IT THREE AT THE MOL ONCE
Report abuse
It would be brillo if Hunty signed, the story is making the news here on Waterford local radio.
The initial mistake was made in the summer when we should of brought him with Doyle. If he’s keen to join now he would of been keen to join with his mate Doyle. So if it goes pear shaped, this needs explaining.
For once mate I am in total agreement with you.
There’s some presumptions there, pal.
How do you know Hunt is a mate of Doyle’s ? I bet your not a mate of everybody you work with.
Why was it a mistake last summer ? Wolves haven’t got the God-given right to march in a demand a player signs for them.
In his avarice to outbid other clubs Brown spent money his then chairman didn’t have Just remember Hull are massively in debt that’s why there’s a fire sale.
Explain to who ? You ? Not if they read your usual posts !
Not an explanation to me no, no.
An explanation to the fans as to why we wern’t interested in him at the start of the season (when he was available) but all of a sudden are now?
Should ‘of’ ??? Would ‘of’ ??? Your stupid comments are only surpassed by your terrible English young man
Report abuse
I agree wolvesmod, poor decision by the fat controller, though he was probably busy stuffing his face with pie at the time.
Hunt is quality and I seem to remember a few people on here moaning we were only after Reading players and saying he wasn’t good enough for them so why Wolves?
Still if we get him I’d be very happy as he is better than Kites and Jarvo.
Imv I feel that Surman was bought to be the player that would cover for the left wing/ midfield but not worked out as well as expected (a project player that will take time to gel)
With all the attention this story is getting I hope this doesnt turn into a dutch auction with the other teams around us – What happened to the club’s stance on making an announcement when the deal is done? PS* Before anyone says ‘Wolves are trying to get the player to put in a transfer request’
Must agree should have moved to bring both Hunt and Doyle but I suspect that someone thought that Surman was the ‘bargain’ that meant that we did’nt have to spend on Hunt – pennywise – poundfoolish imv
Report abuse
Don’t always think your views are the most positive but agree with you on this, shuold have made a bee line for him in the summer. Would be a real solid signing.
Agreed, he would be a good signing but i’d be willing to bet that Hull were prepared to pay more in wages than Wolves and he would have gone there anyway.
The reason why they did not buy him in the summer was that a winger was not the priority as Kightly and Jarvis would have been first choices. Unfortunately due to injuries what we have seen of Kightly is nothing like what we have seen previously.
But Kites was in the physio room from the off! I remember hearing rumours that we did look at doing a joint bid but for some reason it never came off. Mad Tunnu might be onto something with the summer budget, he may have been told he had to keep some back just in case for the Jan window.
wolvesmod,i think mick would have been given a budget in the summer by moxy and the big chunk of that went on doyle, milias and the neck and i think mick was right to let the main of the team from last season see if they could cut it in the premiership. Now i know we have,nt done as well as we want, but were still in there and mick will now be telling moxy amd morgan where he thinks we need to strenghen. I think we need to buy in a bit more quality hence the names were being linked with.
In the humble opinion of a Baggie. Eastwood’s Rubbish talks a lot of sense. Hull, like Portsmouth and quite a few others have got in an almighty mess by spending money they don’t have. Do you want Wolves to be like them and forced to sell off your best players? Of course you could have outbid Hull in the summer for Hunt. Many of our fans have attacked Jeremy Peace for the same reason. Would they be as vocal if we (or you) were going bust in the next couple of seasons. For both clubs the saying ‘been there got the T shirt’ applies. Do we want to go there again?
I agree with you but if the money is there now, one would have to assume it was there then, Morgans £30 Mil is yet to be fully spent, I as you kno TRBH am not an advocate of the over spending trend.
On come Hull you know you want wolves to have him. UTW
Report abuse
Hull are just holing out for as much as they can get for him, we need to get on with it especially if Blus are sniffing around him, but we must look at Hull & learn from the mistakes they have made in terms of overspending & run a tight ship.
As for Beckford, I wouldn’t go for him, yes he has pace but what about his first touch & more importantly his attitude for me he represents too much of a gamble, though he is avaiable at the right price, for me Benjani or Benni McCarthy would be better options & are proven at this level.
Time will tell

So, two bids in, one to be for at least £3million and we’re trying to look at a couple of trialists. Work is being done.
Maybe the pant wetters like JIWAL will now stop stiring and let the club get on with it. Hopefully things will start moving soon, but most Jan transfer windows only kick off in the last few days of January.
According to the Hull Daily paper Hunt is on £35000 a week ( £1.85 million)per year.Cant see Jez sanctioning such a salary.
What is our wage cap at?
I believe its around £20-25k per wk
Report abuse
Our wage cap is at £10000 and bag of pork scratchings!!! Lets hope he likes them eh???
I can’t see how Hunt can be on significantly more at Hull then what Doyle’s on here unless Doyle was an exception and we offeredhim more money because Hunt potentially on 10 grand more then him =/
Report abuse
would moxey stetch to the bag of pork scratchings mmm thats asking alittle to mutch me thinks!
Hunt in and then get BeckFord in and we are away! Up The Wolves
Report abuse
would really like to see us do a mini raid on middlesborough adam johnson to cover for the wings and david wheater who everyone seems to have forgotten about, might be a bit pricey but personally think he would be worth it, both players wont want to stick around with boro’s current poor form. beckford i dont believe has the control and skill to play in the prem, but his finishing is world class.
I like Wheater and would be interesting to see what a firm bid of £4ish mil would do, they are struggling under Strachan but also heavily spending. What about Bardsley?
yea i think wheater would offer us the joleon lescott figure we have been missing since he left, the powerful quick centre back, bardsley would defo be the cheaper option, not really seen much of him personally
Report abuse
tbh we had weater on loan and MM sent him packing yes he has got better since but honestly i don’t think he would make our defence any better besides i remember once on MOTD they tore him to shreds his defence was so bad
Report abuse
Regarding transfer fees, wages and the current football climate, head over to the Hull City FC BBC page and listen to the interview with with Adam Pearson, the Hull chairman. He’s very frank (unbelievably frank when you bare in mind the picture he paints of their predicament baring in mind they are looking for investment) about the predicament they find themselves in. Interesting listening for a club that have a seasons head start on Premier league finances compared to us.
Alex, I should imagine they have still got to pay for their new Stadium ,although maybe the Council and rugby league club have some obligations as well. We can thank Sir Jack for the new Molineux and the £30 million obligation that Steve Morgan is committed to. In theory that should give us a big advantage to make a difference this transfer window, unless Moxey messes it up of course.
Too frank i think for the clubs best interest. Hunt will go if they get an offer.
£35000 a week for Hunt is a lot for anyone to get paid, ridiculous in fact…………. however we want Wolves to remain a Premiership club and that means players of his quality would be a massive step to ensure that. He is an excellent player and consistently Hulls best. He goes and Hull are down. You know you want to Jez, go get him!!!
it is a lot of money but we need a player like him to get the fans on there feet because he is like that, My mate who is a hull fan said he is on his way to wolves before the next match.
I am always a bit dubious about these salary claims though. We can’t even find out how much we pay or receive for players but apparently people know their weekly wages, bonus structure etc. Unless Hull are plc (which I don’t believe they are) I suspect most of this is speculation and hints from his agent who may have alterior motives!
No way is Hunt on £35K I’m not having that, I know they are in financial trouble but they would be if they were paying alot of their players half that.
The Hull Mail (www.Hullsport.com)quotes Hunt was bought by Hull from Reading for £2.5m and is the highest paid player ay £35k per week. Now we all know a lot of that will be in bonuses (and much of that may well be paid retrospectively at the end of the season and almost certainly to Steven Hunt won’t be top dollar). The chairman Adam Pearson sees the ghost of Pompey and MUST reduce that irresponsible wage bill that those fools Diffen(?) the former chairman, and the tanned poseur built up chasing Europe !
It’s now a case of who’s the smartest vulture in town.
C’mon Jez, you can do it !
stephen hunt and kevin doyle were the key men in reading and there partnership was great and i have an idea that hunt would love to be able to play along side doyle again.
come on hunt hand in that transfer request and cum up the table with the wanderers!

Rich, i hope your hull mate is right.

Did anyone see the Man City game last night? Benjani was excellent and he’s hardly played this year. I’d love to get him on loan, he did a great job at Portsmouth. I’m bet he’s on about £50K a week, which may be a problem!
I like Benni McCarthy too, but does he have the appetite for a relegation scrap? If he’s any good why isn’t he playing at B’Burn. At 32 he may be past his best. Beattie would also be a good shout but will Stoke sell to a rival?
As for Beckford he may be worth a punt. But I hear he’s not got a great attitude and I would want to protect the team spirit at all costs. Also can we expect him to make the step up and score the goals we need? It’s a gamble, we only need to look at Ebanks to see it’s not that easy!
I would love Hunt but if Blues are now in for him, do we stand a chance? I think we desperately need cover on the wings. I’ve said it before but could we not stretch to a loan move for Bentley? How about Pennant?
I’d like O’Hara and/or Ledley but I see them as central midfielders and we have one of the best in that position in Milijas! It’s down the flanks where we lack penetration.
I think one of the reasons Ebanks’s struggled this season is due to the lack of service from the wings, i don’t think we have scored from a cross in open play this season. Or have we?
A striker and a winger are priority. If we can bring in quality, I’m confident we’ll finish above three other teams.
We also need cover at leftback if Ward get injured we only have Elokobi, who, lets be honest, should be working the door at Yates’s
Report abuse
Thats funny.
Seriously, if you forget about how big he is and study is workrate and % passes completed and tackles put in you will find he top class.

Hope we do fail to land Hunt as I believe Ledley has far more potential.
Oh my God, don’t start off the Angry Brigade!!
If we fail to get Hunt it’ll be Moxey’s fault for lack of ambition, Morgans fault for lack of investment and McCarthy’s fault for dressing up like Fozzy Bear.
Hunt has good Premiership experience, Ledley’s good in the Championship and playing for wales.
Heads or tails ?
Either would be a good signing, however word is Ledley has stagnated as a player over the last year
Report abuse
really rate Hunt he would be a great signing, class balls from the left. remember hulls opener at our place. Beckford to much of a step up from league one we already have better. Need a prem midfeilder or centre half. good to see us looking positive. Hello to all the North bank lads. Cya Saturday Wolves 2 Wigan 0 :)
I’m not sure if Hunt is on as much as is quoted on here, but even if he is that’s still a workable wage for a player of his ability IMO. Not only would he provide decent crosses from the wing but also as he has already shown can score them himself too, 5 goals so far this season is it? We seem to be replicating Stoke of last season so far, so we may as well continue. A quality striker (Beattie) and a quality winger (Etherington) transformed their season.
Nobody wants to go stupid on the wages front BUT ultimately, if Hunt contributed to us staying up it would be money well spent surely?
I really hope this deal will happen as it’s just what the Wolves need and would I’m sure prove to many Wolves fans including me that we are serious about staying up this time!
Come on Hunt join the gold and black army.
