All hail the player of the ‘Noughties’
Friday 8th January 2010, 9:15AM GMT.
Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd hails a hero from the past in Joleon Lescott as the England defender is named the player of the ‘Noughties’ after a poll.
Happy New Year and welcome to the Tennies, Tenners or the Tens. Whatever it’s called, let’s hope we see more than the two seasons of top flight football that Wolves managed in the Noughties.
Whilst we are on the Noughties, can I thank everybody who voted for their favourite Wolves player of the last ten years.
The results are in and the tenacious Alex Rae, who like me has no hair and probably equally doesn’t care, finished in third place with 17 per cent of the overall vote.
Alex was by far our best player in our first stint of Premier League football, only to be swindled out of the Player of the Year award, which was given to the then-World Ego of the Year, Henri Camara.
Runner up spot with 25 per cent went to that super servant, the artist still known as Jody Craddock. In his seven years at the club, he has been in and out of the side, sometimes so far out he was wearing a different coloured shirt. But when we were starting to waver last season, he came in and helped seal up a leaky defence and was instrumental in helping us clinch the Championship title.
Now very much the senior player in the side, his leadership and goals have been crucial so far this season and Craddock only missed out on winning this poll by a handful of votes.
With those extra few votes and 26 per cent of the overall total, the player you chose as Wolves’ Player of the Decade was Joleon Lescott. Along with Matt Murray and Robbie Keane, Joleon was a talented graduate from the academy and spent seven years at the club, making his debut in 2000.
I was proud to see him pull on an England shirt and it’s just a pity that Joleon wasn’t fit for the recent Manchester City game against us, as I’m sure he would have received a fantastic reception from the Molineux crowd.
Anyway, a worthy winner and I’m sure we’ll see Joleon back here next season, when hopefully we will be facing City once again in the Premiership.
And some fantastic results at the beginning of December mean that we are bang on track to survive our first season back amongst the big boys.
I know Steve Morgan might be looking for more that just mere survival, but he needs to have a reality check. With half of the Premiership table arguably locked in a relegation battle, investing in some proper quality in the January transfer window could make all the difference.
The media rumour mill is in full swing, linking us with a couple of dozen players of varying quality. First area that I’m sure our manager Mick McCarthy will look to address will be on the flanks I would snap Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson up in a heartbeat. I’ve seen him a couple of times this season and he has always shone for Boro out on the left.
Johnson may well cost in excess of the £3million figure being quoted in the media, but we desperately need some reinforcements in this area and proper investment gets you proper results.
It also been rumoured that we have put in a bid for Stephen Hunt with Hull trying to lighten their wage bill, and again I’d be happy to see Stephen link back up with Kevin Doyle.
Maybe Morten Gamst Pedersen might be another option from Blackburn, who rumour has it are also looking to offload Benni McCarthy and Jason Roberts. I don’t think Benni has the kind of work ethic that Mick will be looking for, but Jason has unfinished business at Molineux and could be just the kind of striker who would work well with Doyle.
Eidur Gudjohnsen has been linked in a couple of places, but I’m not sure if he would leave Monaco for a destination ranked fifth worst city in the world by some clueless poll.
Whoever the club bring in, there is little point at this stage of the season spending a million or two on a player, we know what will happen if we do. Doyle’s was a fantastic signing of intent but, apart from Nenad Milijas who is currently either scoring or setting up every Wolves goal, none of Mick’s other summer gambles have really paid dividends.
I don’t think targets such as Villa’s Craig Gardner or Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara will end up at the Molineux, but I’ve a sneaky feeling that Hull’s Kevin Kilbane will be pulling on a Wolves shirt very soon.
A winger, a striker and a decent utility type player would be good business in my opinion in the dreaded desperation window. Of course everybody will tell you that they have just seen Lionel Messi buying a scratchcard in Asda, that’s what makes this time of year so special!
Going in the opposite direction from Molineux is Neill Collins who was never a favourite of mine, but you can’t deny his commitment to the cause. You’d think Neill may have tackled me for some of the mud I chucked his way in this column over the last couple of years, but he would have only missed anyway. Just kidding Neill, honest!
Apart from the weather and Wolverhampton being in the news for being rubbish, there have been three games since my last blog a fortnight ago. A dull cup win and a couple of defeats in the league have left us precariously looking down at the teams all fighting for those valuable points.
Weather permitting, if Sunday’s game at West Ham goes ahead, every lazy journalist in the land will be tagging it as a six pointer. Wigan at home the week after will be dubbed the same.
But the reality is that the Hammers are really not very good this season. Their only away win this season was when they caught us cold at the beginning of the campaign, so they are there for the taking this time around.
It’s a shame really that we are playing them in January as I think come February they will have lost some or all of the spine of the team with goalkeeper Robert Green, Matthew Upson, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole all linked with moves away from a club that are rumoured to be £48million in debt.
Not all of the ‘spine’ are fit for this match and I think we can at least grab a point in the Sunday 1:30pm kick-off.
Finally, as most of you have, I’ve got so many fantastic memories of the last decade of watching Wolves. The Millennium stadium, Doncaster last season, the Premier League fight back against Leicester, Newcastle in the FA Cup, the list goes on and on.
I was also thinking of my favourite goals away from Molineux during the last decade.
Again I could list so many, but I’ve whittled it down to my favourite three. In third place is that magnificent goal for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake against Charlton, a mesmerizing flick and turn past the defender then a searing, angled shot.
In second place, I would put Mark Kennedy’s glorious 35-yard volley at Stockport in the 2001/02 season.
And in first place, for a number of reasons, it’s Alex Rae’s sublime thunderbolt of a goal away at Bolton in our first season in the top-flight. I was sitting in the corporate section with my brother amongst the Bolton fans, when Rae unleashed that shot, and I nearly got lynched when I leapt out of my chair like a deranged salmon. Not only was it our first away goal for a good while, but I’d also won £250 on Alex to score first.
After the game I met Sir Jack Hayward for the first and only time in my life who was amazed that I’d survived that celebration.
Enjoy your weekend and the game – if it beats the weather.

Sorry, but if our ambition is to sign players such as Kevin ‘Zinedine’ Kilbane then somebody needs to have a word. Speak up Morgan.

You just know that we will waste a couple of million on a player that will struggle to make an impact. We should be competing the likes of Babel from Liverpool if we seriously want to stay in this league.
Steve Morgan – either put up or shut up.
Yeah lets pay over 8 million and massive wages for a flop, what a great shout that is. Have you any idea the problems pompy and (soon to be) Hull are in.
Thank god by your moronic posting I can judge that you have no bearing on the decisions being made at the club
Report abuse
You don’t have make a rubbish point… If Wolves spent 8 million on Babel it would be a masive mistake.
He has never once put in a performance for liverpool for the whole 90 minutes…
Players like Hunt will work there socks off when they haven’t got the ball, and have that bit of quality when they do have the ball…

We are woefully short of goals. SEB just isn’t cutting it at this level, so that has to be priority uno for Mick. I like the sound Morten Gamst from Blackburn. He can play on the wing or up top, get him in.
Stephen Hunt would be a great signing. Kevin Kilbane? No ta. Another Kevin Kyle for me. Big, cumbersome and not what we need.

With due respect, Kevin Kilbane was/is not the type of player you describe, plus he is very versatile, wide, centre midfield and more than a useful full back.
Not sure what the fee would be for him, but he would be a useful squad addition.
I do agree about Stephen Hunt, he would be a great signing for you….renew his partnership with Doyle.
Joleon Lescott totally deserves this acknowledgement of his loyalty to the Wolves cause.
The players we are linked with would be good but I am not that keen on Kilbane. I agree with your comment about Gudjohnsen but he is linked with Blackburn – hardly an attractive destination.
In terms of signings, I would say that Surman is one for the future, Doyle is top drawer, Milijas is a must in our team, Zubar will be a good player, Hahnemann is doing a decent job and the one weak link is Halford. He may be a utility player but he lacks pace and is a one trick pony.
West Ham 1-1 or we can get a 1-0 or 2-1. Up the Wolves!

Joleon by far and away has been our best player over the last 10 years.I first saw him in the youth team and his quality stood out immediately. But hasn’t Jody done well.Along with Doyle he has been our player of the season so far. After all the difficulties he encountered when he first joined us,it is great to see him make no 2 in the poll.
joleon is by by far the best player we have grown here of that era, rae was fantastic when he played, shame he was knocking on a bit
as for the future i would love to see jason roberts back and firing em in for us as he would of done if we had held on to him a little longer
as for the wing well im not sure but do like hunt and if they need a stand by the sol is on the transfer list for about a million and he could do a job as he did before if he didnt step over 20 times and tackle himself as pointed out to me yesterday
and how about a goalie for next season ??? as much as i would love to see murray back i wont hold my breathe
Report abuse
Im so glad that Kilbane will NOT be coming to Molineux – who says so? None other than Mick McCarthy himself!
Kilbane has played at more clubs than Bernard Manning and that surely tells you something?
Stephen Hunt seems to be a no-go according to Hull manager Phil Brown but then money talks and Hull definitely need money!
Personally I go for Adam Johnson and I would offer £5m if that’s what it takes, he would be a class signing!
Whoever else we could get in would also be welcome, PROVIDING they have Premier League experience, are not looking for 1 final payday AND would give their all to keep Wolves in the PL.
Agree with you 100% Would like to see Jase Roberts come in too
Report abuse
AGREED…
I think this is the KEY point… Everyone knows that Johnson is going to be a quality player, he surely can’t be enjoying it up in the snowy north with a ‘Ginger’ in charge of the team (no offense to all you other carrot tops!)
Wolves should put a offer on the table for Johnson. Even if they spent 5mill on him, they would recoup that if they ever sold him to one of the big clubs.
Question is though, would he want to come to Wolves when there are so many other clubs interested… I know 1 thing, Moxey ain’t winning him over. lets hope he wants the move eh.
P.S…… Would still be over the moon if Hunt came, he is quality also, and works his socks off every game.
I will be amazed if we buy any player that is currently in the first team of any premiership club.Championship and unheard of, foreign players seem to be the choices of the management.Forget the likes of Kilbane etc we need to splash out on a decent striker to help out Doyle.I broke out in a cold sweat the other night when I dreamt he was injured for the rest of the season.I dread to think what would happen if he is out for any length of time.
Hunt not worth 3 million, he might run all day but can`t cross his arms let alone a football
Report abuse
You speak absolute nonsense… He ripped Wolves apart when we played them at their ground last season. (although they only won due to ‘SUPER COLLINS’ own goal.
I can’t believe we didn’t go for Hunt in the first place, but there’s no way Hull will sell him to us now, surely?
Under no circumstances would I want Kilbane at the club, not only is he an albion reject, he’s lost the most games as a player in the top flight. Past it.
Adam Jonson would be a great signing but think we’ll be priced out of a move for him and he’ll prob join a top ten side in the summer.
I’d try the loan market. I’d love to show our intent by taking on a player like Bentley form spurs. Perhaps a summer signing if we stay up.
I do feel we need to strengthen the team, a winger/creative midfielder and a striker who can get 10 goals between now and May are a priority. We have an excellent chance of staying up this year and we could make it a lot easier for ourselves with a few astute purchases in Jan.
The West Ham, Wigan and Hull games are massive. We could really move away from the pack if we beat these three.
We should have gone in for Hunt at the same time as Doyle. It was a missed opportunity, especially if the management now want him. Can’t see Hull letting him go in January (read the posts in “Hull and East Riding News”) – he’s obviously done well for them and is a fans’ favourite and he’s only been there “five minutes”. To claw back money they’ll get rid of other players rather than one who has done well for them.
Adam Johnson and Stephen Hunt would be good additions can not believe the Craddock is rated one our best recent players,Stearman and one other should be the starting centre halfs….we definitly need a quality centre forward, love to see Keane back and a left back maybe Nicky Shorey on loan
Hanneman
foley
Stearman
mancienne
shorey
hunt
henry capt
milijas
johnson
keane
doyle
looks like a decent team,so their is no chance of it happening, either Morgan is to tight with the wonga or MM is not the man to bring in the big signings
Report abuse
Honestly, Keane ain’t coming back to us… Get that out of your head. And have you watched ANY game this season…. Let me answer for you NO…. How can you put Mancienne in at centre half, he is too lightweight as has been proved already.
knocker, I think you are in dream land. Robbie Keane? Nicky Shorey? Hunt and Johnson? I know its only your fantasy team, but come on, get real.
knocker, we would all like to see Robbie Keane back at the club, but I think he will be heading up the M6 to Villa. Don’t knock Craddock, he has been brilliant for this club.
The gulf between Premiership and Championship is personified in Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. Last couple of years he’s seemed unstoppable, now he looks a pale shadow of the goal taker he was…even against ‘Championship’standard teams like Burnley and Bolton, and Div One Tranmere.
MM’s got him working hard, but, it’s goals we desperately need, and support for Doyle too. I’ve said before I think Jason Roberts would be ideal. Strong, gives as good as he takes and a proven goalscorer in the Premier with teams of our standard Wigan, Blackburn, Tescos etc.
As for competing for the likes of £9 million Babel, somebody’s got Fantasy & Reality Football confused. Steven Hunt is a good shout mind you, and Kilbane ? A few years ago definately. Vast International and Premiership nous, but, I personally don’t think so.
I don’t really understand all of the negative attitude towards kevin kilbane. We’re desperatley in need of some premiership experience and he has plenty of that while still having at least a season left in him, maybe two. He’s done a consistently sound job for his last couple of clubs and if ward was injured would we rather kilbane or elokobi at left back?! As for wingers, johnson has to be first choice but doubt we’ll get him. hunt would be a good fall back if they’d sell him to us. as for the likes of keane, wake up folks!
At least some-one on here talks some sense…
K.K would ONLY play at left back for wolves if he came… lets hope not though eh… I think S.Ward is doing OK at the moment… Would like him to have a little more ‘defending’ capabilties though!!!!!!!
I agree with Carl, the bile aimed at KK is abit hard to stomach. A decent honest pro who could come in a do a job. I’d be a bit gutted if he was the pinnacle of our January transfer signings.
But does anyone seriuously think a left back is our priority? We have a good one, a poor one and one who will be very useful if we ever start a boxing or weightlifting team. Plus an excellent prospect out on loan. Attacking players – we need ATTACKING PLAYERS
Report abuse
Obviously Hunt would be an excellent addition to the squad. If not, Why not sign Whittingham from Cardiff? He’s scoring goals, is a good winger and could be another Etherington who is doing well at Stoke. I’d also take Shorey from Villa, Carsley from Blues and we are still probably a quality striker short. I see Blues are looking at Jones but obviously he would be out of our price range. Why not take a punt on Kitson from Stoke? He’s played alongside Doyle (and done well) at this level before. Failing that, we need to hope Keogh comes back soon because he’d be of more use up front now than Blake who just doesn’t seem to be able to cut it at this level. Hopefully the rumours surrounding Nugent and a 2M bid are just that – Rumours.
Don’t think Johnson will be coming guess he’ll be out of our price range . Hunt would be a great signing if we can’t get him what about gambling on Jermaine Pennant and Sol Campbell ? Players i would like to see at Wolves Kevin Nolan and James Beattie . Also 1 of them Arsenal youngsters on loan ( vague i know but can’t think of names )
players i would like to come in january, senderos from arsenal, hunt from hull, can you imagine the fight for the ball for free kicks with milijas, jermane pennant from a. madrid he wants to come home, up front roberts or beattie to provide the muscle up front with doyle and to round off my dealings i would go for a cheeky loan deal for ireland from man city now viera,s gone there..
3 players who are better than what we’ve already got are required! for me a winger a centre half and a forward. Hunt would be ideal and with Hull needing to cut costs i can see him pitching up at the Mol with a few days of the window left for around £4m. Centre half i’d go for Wheater bags of experience at this level still a good age and he must be looking at the exit now it appears Boro won’t be making an immediate return to the prem! £6m should be enough to prise him away but we’d have to make him the highest paid player at the club! Upfront i’d hang fire for a couple of weeks and wait to see what City are upto. If there bring another striker in, ( which the’re more than likley to do) i’d go for Santa cruz on loan. Bit ambitious i know but he’d make a great foil for Doyle and would chip in with a fair few goals! failing that a loan option from another top team with a big squad would be the way to go as we need quality up front now not journey men who havn’t cut it in the past or untried potentials who aren’t ready. Anyway whatever happens it’s going to be an exciting 3 weeks till the window closes!

Good blog to start the new year Nathan.
You know, I thought we’d had a pretty good decade, some great highlites – a couple of promotions, beating all the local (to WW) teams, beating the ManUre, some real fans’ players, some good managers, and then this poll brought it home. Our best player was sold for £2m and change. Our second best player is an old crock who helped screw up 2003-4 and started that way last season. That’s as much of a joke as some African playeroftheyearwhocouldn’thitabarndoorat twopaces being made player of the year.
So all my optimism for the 10′s has been eroded away, and all I can look forward is the mighty gold & black coming to play at Aldershot again as we shoot through the divisions again.

The main problem with a Stephen Hunt deal is that we’re playing Hull 2 days before the transfer window shuts. There is no way they’ll sell him to us before that game so this is, if it’s even real, going to be a very long, protracted transfer saga.
