Revamp brings Dudley Zoo animals closer
Friday 10th September 2010, 11:12AM BST.
An £80,000 revamp has transformed the orangutan house at Dudley Zoo, quadrupling its size and creating a viewing area to bring visitors closer to the animals.
Originally, bosses hoped to spend £1.5million on the scheme, which would have featured a dome-shaped roof.
These plans were part of a £10m transformation of the zoo which is in limbo after funding from Advantage West Midlands was suspended.
Bosses remained committed to the upgrade and, following an eight-month project, have replaced the roof of the 1950s building and improved the internal quarters.
Five dens – three of them private – have been created for the apes, Azimat, aged 42, Benji, 30, Jazz, 18, and Jurong, 15, featuring ropes, rocks and a climbing frame.
Bosses say that top of visitors’ requests is a wish to get closer to the animals, so two viewing areas have been created with only a pane of glass separating the public from the apes.
Chief executive Peter Suddock said: “The work has provided a much-improved facility.
“We needed to replace the roof of the house, as it was in a poor state, so took the opportunity to make the internal quarters much larger.
“The work was part of a programme to improve accommodation for the orangutans, and we hope to modify the outdoor areas in the near future.”
The project was funded by a £75,000 legacy from long-term zoo supporters the late Margaret and Alan Leafe from Sheffield, plus a further donation from the Zoo’s Development Trust.
Mr Suddock added: “Throughout the building programme, a decision was made to keep the orangs within the original housing, which the animals found immensely amusing as they shared their home with builders, albeit separated by glass.”
The project was designed in-house and led by senior curator Derek Grove, and all contractors and materials used were local.

Lottery would be better than waiting for that mess to be sorted out..why not support our sacred sites, our heritage and of course, our animals? Instead of building mega mosques this government should be putting us first.

Dudley zoo should of been closed in the 1970s!
Sad animals, looking bored and depressed, the gorilla looked like he was suicidal, the poor crocodile probably had a complex about who could bounce a coin off his nose, and the giraffe house stank.Dont get me wrong i enjoyed it as a child, but i think zoos now are well passed their sell by date. Its been tired and run down for years.Trying to get a pram up the hill is a nightmare.Turn it into something else,i feel so sorry for the animals.
As for the above comment,im saddened and ashamed of the racism in Dudley. All our children have to learn to get along with each other,no matter what religious views they have,or the colour of their skin.Dudley has always been a mixed race community,of which i was proud to be a part of.I gained much education from indian women, and their part in society, the music i listened to was 2 tone, reggae and ska, bridging the gap between black and white.Dont let your children be racist,we have a lot to learn from people from different cultures. They are the same as us on the inside.I was saddened to see the riots in my old home town, please live and let live.

Whilst I agree with your comment about Zoos being from the past I cannot agree with your painfully PC and misplaced tirade about racism. There is as much place in todays society for racism as there is for zoos, none, but Anons comment is not racist. Mega mosques are neither needed nor wanted by the majority of people in England, but unfortunately what the majority of people want means nothing to the left wing “We are socialist so we are always right” brigade. Shame on you for your comment!

Sir,i am not ashamed of what i write,i believe this is another excuse to jump on the band wagon, and do everything they can to stop this mosque being built. It is obviously wanted,or we would not even be discussing it.There is a large muslim community in the midlands, always has been.Surely these people should have the right to pray.Shame on you for asuming the ”majority of people in England”dont want a mosque, obviously they do.
