Wolves players go back to school

Friday 26th March 2010, 8:52AM GMT.

Foreign Wolverhampton Wanderers players said bonjour, hello and hola to English language lessons at the city’s most multicultural school.

Five sporting stars, who all speak English as a second language, went along to Woden Primary School, in Springfield Road, yesterday afternoon.

Half of the 300 pupils at Woden use English as an extra language and more than 39 different languages are spoken at the school.

Players Ronald Zubar, Adlene Guedioura, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, Nenad Milijaš and Segundo Castillo, who between them speak Spanish, French, Serbian and Arabic, wanted to inspire the children to keep learning.

First team defender Zubar, who moved to the city from the West Indies last summer, told the students that speaking a range of languages will open doors for them as they get older.

He said: “When I arrived here I couldn’t speak any English and I had to pick it up on the football pitch, in supermarkets and at restaurants. I’ve never had any lessons.

“It’s great to see a school where they speak so many languages because it will help them in the future. Learning a new language can seem like a challenge at times but it is worth it in the end,”
