The Bike Light programme in Walsall is run from a purpose built bike track created on land next to the Mirus Academy.

Run by Frank F Harrison Community Association the project aims to keep eight to 19 year-olds on the straight and narrow.

The track was created over 25 years ago but given a revamp of five years ago through the association to create the current facilities.

They are referred to the scheme, which puts them on a 10 week course and teaches a range of skills such as mechanics, learning about safe riding and carrying out track repairs.

The police and Walsall Council are on board with the programme which caters for more than 250 young people a year.

Previous funding ran out, but it has now been confirmed that £335,875 has been awarded from the Big Lottery Fund for the initiative over the next three years.

The track which can be used for motocross and quad biking is based off Leamore Lane.

Liam Perrens, youth co-ordinator, at the association said the group is delighted to have been awarded the funding for the initiative.

He said: "It allows us to work with the young people who are most at risk of offending. It allows them to engage in positive activities within their own communities."
