Cycling legend Hugh Porter peddles pedal power
He has won the World Championship four times and took a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Now Wolverhampton cycling legend Hugh Porter is to lead cyclists on the first mass participation ride in Staffordshire and Shropshire.
Round The Wrekin Sportive takes place on May 22, and hundreds of people will take part, going on one of three routes.
All heading out from Kingswinford Rugby Club, the cyclists will either cycle 100 miles, 60 miles or 23 miles, finishing back at the club.
The cycle is to raise money for Compton Hospice, and could be the first for many, according to Mr Porter.
He said: "The cycle ride is a great idea and hopefully the first of many.
"The sport is growing in the wake of British successes with thousands of riders out and about every weekend.
"It is good for your fitness and this event then provides people the chance to raise money for charity at the same time."
Organised by Rideventures and Fishface Cycles, in partnership with Wolverhampton-based charity Compton Hospice, the event also aims to raise funds for the hospice.
Mr Porter will take part in the 23-mile route, which will go through Wall Heath, Bobbington, Claverley and Pattingham.
The longer distance routes take in Ironbridge Gorge, The Wrekin and The Long Mynd.
It is not the first time Mr Porter has raised money for the charity. Last year he led a 12-strong 'Team Hugh' team in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey.
And he also organised a 40-mile charity ride to mark his 75th birthday.
He said: "Compton Hospice is a wonderful charity that cares for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, not only looking after the patient but also helping their families through a very difficult time." There is a minimum age of 16 for the 'epic' 100-mile route and people taking part in the standard and short 64 and 23 mile routes must be aged at least 13. Under-18s must have a parental consent form and under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Visit www.roundthewrekin.co.uk
