More than 3,500 people pounded the streets of the town yesterday taking on the 13.1mile route.

The runners set off at 10am from Stafford Street while a one-mile fun run began ten minutes later attracting people to put on their favourite outfits with the pavements awash with Superman and Spiderman costumes while others, such as Bristol duo Laurie French and Alan Conlon strayed away from the superhero tack and instead went along as TV's 118 runners.

While many were simply running to test themselves some were taking part for more sentimental reasons.

Andrew Williams, 50 and from Stoke, led a 40-strong contingent who were all running in memory of his late son Lucas, who died aged six last year of a brain tumour.

Friends, family and even Lucas's former teachers took part in the half marathon helping to generate £26,000 for 'Lucas's Legacy' set up to fund research into child brain tumours.

Mr Williams said: "I made it in just under two hours. We were really lucky with the weather because it was really nice.

"It's a fantastic achievement to raise awareness of Lucas's Legacy but it is also nice so many people took part to help and support us.

"We also had lots of friends and family come and support us on the day." Just running behind the group were Telford trio Stephen Haynes, 48, his wife Shelley, 41 and brother-in-law Dean Blythe, 44.

Mr Haynes had also suffered a brain tumour in 2006 but thankfully had it removed and recovered. He said afterwards he transformed his lifestyle turning to running to keep himself fit and healthy and added that it was very poignant to see the group in front with 'Brave Lucas' on their t-shirts.

He said: "This year is ten years since I had my tumour removed.

"I had to leave my job as a result and just decided to completely change my lifestyle. We all run together as a family to keep fit and healthy.

"My brother-in-law Dean did it in an excellent time for himself which was one hour 25 minutes. He is training for the London Marathon."
