The driver later told emergency crews that he had lost control while trying to avoid a box in one of the lanes of the traffic island around 7.45pm.

The white Seat in which he was travelling alone at the time of the accident suffered significant front end damage and one carriageway of the round about was closed near the Telford turn off during recovery work.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital for a knee injury to be assessed.

Watch Commander Andy Morgan from Fallings Park fire station who attended alone with colleagues from Cannock fire station said: "We were told that the accident happened after he avoided a box in the road. The car hit the bridge with some force but he was wearing his seat belt and all the air bags went off, so fortunately his injuries were minor."
