But the malfunction delighted eagle-eyed fans of the show who spotted the presenters at the town's Orbital Retail Park last night.

Former Friends actor LeBlanc was mid-way through his first Top Gear road trip with fellow presenter Chris Evans when they had to pull over to fix the three-wheeler motor, which was painted in the stars and stripes of the USA. Evans was also in a Reliant Robin, featuring the Union Flag.

Among those who met the pair was Tom Browne, aged 62, from Essington, near Wolverhampton.

He had a picture taken with LeBlanc as well as with Evans, who was ordering food in a nearby KFC.

Tom's 26-year-old son, Sean, said: "They were filming in two Reliant Robins when one broke down and they had to fix it. Matt's car was painted in the Stars and Stripes while the car Chris was in had the Union Flag on it. Dad had just popped out to get something to eat and there they were, fixing the car.

"They had cut the roofs off both cars for filming so they were wrapped up in loads of layers.

"He was pleasant enough to let dad have his photo taken with him and when he saw Chris Evans he also offered to have his picture taken."

The Top Gear challenge is to drive more than 240 miles in the three-wheelers from London to Blackpool.
