The 23-year-old was walking along Broad Street when he was punched, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the floor.

The doctor also suffered a fractured jaw and damaged teeth in the attack.

He was taken to hospital where the extent of the injuries required emergency intensive care where he was induced into a temporary coma. As a result of the head injury, he has been left with a reduced function of his hand and damage to the nerves which control smell and taste.

Following the assault at around 3am on Saturday, September 12, police would like to speak to the man pictured who they described as Asian, around 5'6", in his mid to late 20's, with dark hair, and at the time of the incident he was wearing a light coloured shirt and dark trousers.

Detective Constable Luke Bielby, from the force's CID department, said: "This was a totally unprovoked attack on a young man following a night out in Birmingham, which has left a monumental impact on his life. As well as his physical suffering, his injuries mean his career has been put in jeopardy.

"I would urge anyone who saw the attack in the early hours of that Saturday morning, or anyone who recognises the suspect to call me on 101, or call Crimestoppers, confidentially on 0800 555 111."
