Last year the online retail giant employed 2,500 temporary workers at the distribution centre in Rugeley for the festive season.

This year the firm plans to take on 19,000 across the UK - up from 13,000 in 2014.

The exact number of roles available at Rugeley this year has not yet been confirmed.

Amazon said the seasonal positions will be within its fulfilment and customer service centres during the Christmas period and there would be potential for permanent roles to follow.

The retailer said it had created 700 permanent roles at its UK fulfilment centres so far this year, and now employed 7,800 people in the eight centres, up from 4,000 at the beginning of 2011.

Amazon's vice president of UK operations John Tagawa said: "As we continue to expand our operations in the UK, we are confident that hundreds of people who join us this Christmas in a seasonal role will have the opportunity to stay on with us on a permanent basis."
