The fundraisers dressed in animal onesies for the annual Dudley Zoo charity event to raise money for the zoo's conservation projects and 21st Century Tiger, a charity supporting tigers in the wild.

Zoo spokesman Jane Thomas estimated that between 200 and 250 people took part in the event on Saturday, with a variety of age groups taking the chance to see the zoo's exotic animals.

Conservation projects being undertaken by the zoo include the Humboldt penguin, which is listed as vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union and the Asiatic lion, which used to roam from southern Europe to Japan, but is now found only in an Indian forest.

Mrs Thomas said she did not know how much was raised as sponsorship money was still coming in.

She added: "It should be thousands, but we don't know exactly how much yet. It takes a couple of months for people to come back to us.

"It was a really great event and there were hundreds of people in fancy dress and in their onesies walking round the zoo."

There was no minimum sponsorship, though participants were encouraged to raise at least £50.

This would pay a community ranger in Sumatra for one month.
