The three-day show, which is one of the highlight's in the attraction's busy events calendar, also saw its own collection of heritage steam engines take centre stage.

Among the engines being showcased was 90733 'Dub Dee' which travelled down from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in West Yorkshire to make its Severn Valley debut.

Adding a splash of colour to proceedings was a locomotive that used to work in the London Underground tunnels until 1969. The Pannier Tank has striking London Transport maroon livery.

Duty train crew inspector Mick Williams said the event, which began on Friday, was a great success.

"It was a good gala. Everything went like clockwork and visitor numbers were very high.

"It's a special year for the railway and we will have our autumn gala later in the year, which is normally the busier one of the two so we are looking forward to that as well," he added.

Last week, an exhibition celebrating 50 years of the Severn Valley Railway was officially opened at the Engine House at Highley.

It follows the attraction's journey from 1965, when the railway preservation scheme was mooted, to the present day with the railway a booming tourist attraction, welcoming more than 200,000 passengers a year.

The exhibition at the Engine House at Highley also features a giant timeline and visitors are able to record their own memories and comments in a special visitor book.
