Homeless but Human

Socks & Chocs haven't written their latest blog post, instead it's a poem that comes from one of their Prince's Trust students Zoe Elizabeth Thomas.

I am human

Cut me and I bleed,

Just like you, really I do.

I have feelings just like you

I have moments where I need help getting through.

Love, kindness and attention I'd like too,

I'm HUMAN it's true!

Don't be fooled,

You walk past and say I'm sorry I can't help you

I sit here and smile at you-

I say "It's ok God bless and have a good day",

But really wishing just for a minute you would just stay!

Stay and tell me about your day or just show me genuine kindness in some way.

I'm crying and begging for help

But you look for tears,

And don't see it.

You have no idea what's going on inside,

The things I feel I must hide,

The fear, the sadness, the loneliness the depression, the confusion

And those moments you don't even feel human.

It's hard,

Same old things said time and time again.

And the worst one is when they say I just want to go home-

Yes home,

The one place I do not have,

The one place I crave and need,

But so blindly you go and I stay here on the streets.

Why do you ignore me? As if I'm part of the furniture,

As if I'm humans waste,

As if I'm adding pressure to your case,

As if I'm a disgrace -

As if I'm nothing but a waste of space.

Now this is where we come in

This is the beginning.

We are on a mission

We have made the decision,

That's it's no longer ignorance but education,

No longer anger but compassionate frustration,

We are determined that despite our age

Our race, things we might face

Deposite our background, or the lack of things we don't have around,

Regardless of how it may sound,

We are determined to make a change

A change that helps people know someone is out there,

To let them know people do care

And we can share,

Because it's true life is not always fair.

But to whom much is given much is required,

We have enough to give,

Enough to help somoene else live

And I'm not talking about just money- no that's not what I'm trying to say

I'm talking about giving in any way.

Together we can stop and put things right,

To help those who do fight but fail,

And not forget those who are homeless because they're alcoholics or come out of jail.

It's helping everyone on the streets,

Showing them kindness when we meet.

We thank God it's not us or our family,

But that doesn't mean we ignore the situation so openly,

No they need as much help as anyone,

Regardless of what they've done,

Cuz truth is we've all made mistakes,

And been at the point where slots been at stake,

But we got through,

So let's give them hope too.

So no longer will the homeless be ignored because they too deserve a mention!

Everyone deep down needs love care and attention

I don't care who you are- truth is we all need affection.

Homelessness is a big issue

But we have to try and tackle it

And if we fail we get up again and try

Because persistence we all have all women and men

But the thing is we all have to do it together,

Not just religious leaders, teachers, preachers,

Not just the police, the MPs

Not just your friends or family

But it's going to take you and me.
