Where to enjoy our wonderful wildlife

I would like to start my blog by paying homage to all the people work tirelessly to safeguard the future of our wildlife.

Published

To the wildlife trusts, organisations and groups who manage, conserve and promote our natural ecosystems and encourage bio diversity. To the professionals who devote their lives to wildlife management and who pass on their knowledge to us in the form of better education. And not forgetting all those volunteers that turn up on a frosty Sunday morning, pick up a spade or a trowel, sometimes up to their ankles in mud, and work to improve access to visitor sites so that we can all enjoy our fantastically diverse wildlife. To you all I tip my hat…..

There are many ways in which you can get involved with local wildlife:

  • The Staffordshire Wildlife Trust is well worth a visit, especially for children. The organisation's headquarters are at the Wolseley Centre which is located between Rugeley and Stafford.

  • Wolverhampton's branch of the RSPB arrange bird spotting trips and educational talks. Check out their website if you are interested in birding.

  • Chasewater Country Park is a site of special scientific interest (sssi). It's managed by Staffordshire County Council and is a great resource just on our doorstep. If you have never seen a wild red deer, take a trip over to Chasewater. You can park near the Chasewater Railway and have a leisurely wander around there. If you keep your eyes peeled though, there's a lot more to see than just red deer.

  • Another favourite of mine is The Woodland Trust which conserves our ancient woodland for future generations. People do not always understand how important these woodlands are for biodiversity, and their website is well worth checking out. Woodlandtrust.org.uk

I know there are many other organisations in our area who are worthy of a mention, and hopefully I'll be able to cover them in future blog posts.

Enjoy your wildplaces..
