'Shocking' and an 'absolute joke': Wolves fans react to £250k fundraising campaign for Sir Jack Hayward statue

Wolves fans have overwhelmingly reacted with outrage as it was announced today that the club has launched a £250,000 campaign to erect a statue of Sir Jack Hayward outside Molineux.

The fundraising drive is asking fans to donate 'a tenner for Sir Jack' to cover the costs.

But just weeks after the club sold Benik Afobe for £10m many fans are questioning why the club cannot stump up the costs.

In an Express & Star poll 83 per cent of voters said that Wolves were wrong to ask fans to pay for the statue.

Fans took to Twitter today to voice their opinions on the 'tenner for Sir Jack' initiative.

  • There will be an option to donate when renewing season tickets

  • A donation can be made by texting SIRJ91 plus their donation to 70070

  • Online at www.justgiving.com/sirjackhayward

  • Via the Wolves website

The club wants to put the statue on the concourse outside the site of the old Wanderer pub, overlooking the stadium.

A design hasn't yet been finalised, but it will be created by sculptor James Butler, who also built the Billy Wright and Stan Cullis statues at Molineux.

The project will be supporter-led, with members of the fan's parliament and former players' association among groups leading the fundraising drive.

Donations will be held in a restricted Sir Jack Statue fund account within the Wolves Community Trust charity, and overseen by a fundraising committee and trustees.
