Madeley on America: Hillary Clinton can let Donald Trump dig his grave

Last night, with her ears no doubt still ringing from the Trumpster's latest verbal assault, Hillary Clinton attended a private fundraiser in Seattle.

The night before she filmed an interview for The Ellen DeGeneres Show - a yank version of This Morning - and on Monday she'll be the guest of honour at a posh dinner hosted by Billy Crystal and Matthew Broderick, he of Ferris Bueller's Day Off fame.

Gone, for the moment, are the big rallies and wall-to-wall meet and greets with the electorate.

On the surface it seems like a kamikaze move from a presidential hopeful just a few weeks away from polling day.

But it may just be Hillary's most sensible tactic of the entire campaign.

Her advisors will be alive to the fact that every time she is paraded in front of the public the possibility of her dropping a potentially damaging clanger increase.

Discussing police brutality with Mary J Blige and chatting about haircuts with an 11-year-old might even persuade some gullible members of the electorate that she is, in fact, just like them.

So why not wrap her up in cotton wool and allow Donald to carry on digging his own grave?

In another blow to his ailing campaign, Trump has been rounded on by some of the Republican Party's most generous donors, who say his creepy behaviour could cause them lasting damage.

He probably thought it couldn't get any worse than having the Back Street Boys demand he stops using their songs after he blasted I Want It That Way during a rally in Florida.

We all know that Wednesday night in Vegas will serve as Trump's last stand.

While Clinton is right to attempt to target voters through fluffy television appearances and prancing around with Hollywood stars, Donald knows he needs a Hail Mary to stand any chance of closing the gap.

Just don't expect Hillary to rock up in a Save Donald t-shirt.
