Madeley on America: Presidential scrap is only going to get uglier and nastier

It has been ugly, brutal and at times downright offensive, but chances are we still ain't seen the worst of the US Presidential campaign.

Believe it or not, it is entirely possible that the gloves are yet to really come off in this tawdry power struggle between Clinton and Trump.

Now that may seem a ludicrous comment in a tussle that has thus far seen more name-calling and cheap jibes than the average pub night out with your mates.

But now we are being told that the Trump we have seen in recent weeks is in fact the calm, measured and thoughtful version.

His advisors reckon that as the race enters the final straight, it's time to ramp up the no-holds-barred attacks on his opponent in a bid to persuade the many Democrats who don't like her to stay away on voting day.

So the man who threatened to jail 'crooked' Clinton, called her husband a predator and branded Barack Obama incompetent is preparing to get really nasty.

The Trumpster appears to be looking forward to his new found freedom, writing on Twitter: "It's so nice that the shackles have been taken off me and I can now fight for America the way I want to."

Whatever tactic Trump adopts in his scorched-earth strategy, Clinton is highly unlikely to take it on the chin, despite her increasingly desperate efforts to be the upholder of decency.

Hillary taking the moral high ground? It is like Kim Kardashian lambasting Katie Price for appearing in a smutty film.

It may be an idea for both candidates to ditch the policy arguments (ok, so Trump may have already done that months ago), and go head-to-head in an actual boxing bout.

Clinton, at 68, is two years Trump's junior, and would surely love nothing more than to humiliate the ultimate alpha-male with a volley of jabs and uppercuts.

I can just see it now.

Don in the red corner being egged on by his cheerleaders Nigel Farage and Billy Bush. Hillary over in the blue corner, as Bill stands by with the Vaseline.

Ding-ding, round one!
