Madeley on America: US election? It's just a pile of raging bull

A dog. A bozo. A punk. A pig. Blatantly stupid. Wow. You talkin' to me, Robert de Niro? Thankfully not. The Hollywood legend is - you guessed it - on about Donald Trump.

So much so he even want to Meet the Focker, if only to 'punch him in the face'.

And that was before Trump's latest TV showdown with Hillary Clinton, writes Express & Star political editor Peter Madeley.

Who knows what he'll be thinking now the dirty Don's latest I'm-too-sexist-for-this shirt scandal has hit the fan?

In the latest TV debate, the Trumpster had another bad night at the hands of Hillary, who wisely gave him enough rope and sat back to watch her presidential rival do his chances of the White House in, once again.

There was no bait in the trap. There didn't need to be.

Just give Donald a microphone, an audience of millions and point him at the camera.

He'll do the rest himself.

Can he do stupid? Sure he can.

Rude? You got it.

Thick as brisket? Aww, shucks, it's too easy.

It's saying something when dodgy ol' Hillary can play the 'holier than thou' candidate after deleting 33,000 classified emails – especially as her defence often sounds less plausible than that money just 'resting' in Father Ted's account.

But that is where we are at in the most tawdry American election campaign of all time. And while the Republicans flee to distance themselves from the imploding Trump disaster, the Democrats can take no pride in their part in this omnishambles.

After all, Trump is probably the worst presidential candidate in history. A donkey in a rosette should be able to beat him.

But they went for possibly the most loathed politician in the USA.

A woman who screams self-entitlement, tarnished with the sins of her husband's knee-trembling ways.

Incredibly, by doing so - they turned this into a genuine contest.

Not any more, however.

The political fate of the most powerful nation on earth has turned on a surreptitiously recorded off-hand conversation in the back of a bus 11 years ago.

Let that sink in for a minute.

Unsurprisingly, the blows have rained down on Trump from all quarters since the footage became public.

While the uproar is understandable, should we really be surprised that this is the type of 'banter' (someone should really ban that word) that Trump gets up to when he believes he is away from the cameras? This is not a man who considers liberal sensitivities before he opens his mouth.

In perhaps no other civilised country in the world would Trump still stand a chance of being elected as leader.

And yet . . . he's still there, with a 'puncher's chance' of landing the prize.

So, while there will undoubtedly be more revelations to come about him, who's to say the next Big Reveal won't be about Hillary's shady past?

Why is Trump still clinging on? Is it stubborness – or does he know something we don't?

Because while it may look like a one-horse race, there's still plenty of time left in this final straight and all sides would do well to remember . . . a week is a long time in politics.
