The issue was first reported by Birmingham Airport at 6.11am this morning.

An spokesperson for the airport said: "We are experiencing a second IT systems failure in the security search area today. Manual searches are currently being carried out and we advise passengers departing this afternoon to allow extra time when travelling through the Airport. We are working hard to rectify the issue and apologise to passengers travelling out of Birmingham Airport today for any inconvenience."

The problem was resolved just after two and a half hours later, when a tweet sent from the airport's account said: "The IT fault we experienced in security has now been rectified and the time taken to proceed through security will now begin to improve."

The delays were set to improve throughout the morning.
