The journey from Codsall to Perton - which is less than three miles - was reported to have taken drivers up to an hour in the evening rush-hour.

The problems stemmed from emergency road works which had to be carried out at The Parkway, with queues stretching back along Wrottesley Park Road.

Bosses at Western Power Distribution said they moved to repair four damaged cables which had caused 19 street lights in the area to fail.

The temporary traffic lights were due to be removed by around 10pm tonight, bosses added.

John Weston, shift manager at Western Power Distribution, said: "The cable failures around the island at The Parkway are where a new fence had been constructed. It appears those working on the fence caused the damage to the cables.

"We have had complaints regarding the long delays at the lights and we have sent contractors to adjust the timings. It should all be clear by around 10pm.

"We apologise for any delays people experienced on their journeys home from work."
