HS2 will be a 'scar' on Staffordshire's 'beautiful countryside' and poses no economic benefits, county council bosses have said in a formal response as part of the consultation into the scheme.

moreStaffordshire County Council made the remarks in its response to consultation on phase two of the scheme, which closed on Friday.

Council leader Philip Atkins said: "This second phase will cut through a further 33 miles of Staffordshire making 45 miles and our only interest is ensuring our communities' voice is heard and we achieve the best deal for all of Staffordshire and its residents.

"Our priority now is to put forward a credible, consistent and compelling argument for mitigating the route."
