Solar panels could be used on more Cannock houses

Solar panels could be installed at hundreds of council houses across Cannock to cut electricity bills, after a pilot project was hailed a success.

Panels were fitted at 39 council-owned bungalows in Norton Canes last year by Cannock Chase Council.

Residents have reported large savings on their bills and bosses say they are now hoping to secure funding to expand the programme.

It is thought around 1,300 homes could be eligible for the work, which would see a private firm lease the external roof space of the bungalows for 25 years and fund the installation and panel maintenance.

Southern Staffordshire Community Energy was given the go-ahead to take on an initial project for up to 300 homes at Cannock's Housing Policy Development Committee last night.
