Mr Uppal, aged 49, will fight to win back the seat which was taken by Labour's Rob Marris at the 2015 General Election.

Mr Marris has announced he will not be defending the seat and will stand down as an MP. Trade unionist and nurse Eleanor Smith will be aiming to keep the seat Labour red.

The Wolverhampton South West seat has been closely contested in recent years, swinging backwards and forwards between Labour and the Conservatives.

Mr Uppal lost Wolverhampton South West to Mr Marris by 801 votes in the 2015 election after previously unseating Mr Marris by 691 votes in 2010. He had already announced his attention to stand and has now been confirmed as the party's candidate.

Mr Uppal said: "I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to once again represent Wolverhampton South West in Parliament."

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that sitting MPs Jeremy Lefroy and Michael Fabricant will defend their seats in Stafford and Lichfield.
