World will be more dangerous with Trump as president, say Express & Star readers

Sixty per cent of Express & Star readers responding to an online poll say that Donald Trump will not make a good US president.

With Mr Trump set to take his place in the White House on Friday, more than 1,500 readers have taken part in our online poll, with just over a third of people giving the business mogul their backing.

And 45 per cent of respondents reckon Mr Trump's inauguration could spark a deterioration in Britain's 'special relationship' with America, which has blossomed under previous regimes.

The same number of people think the UK's trade relations with America will get worse under Mr Trump's administration, with 34 per cent saying it will improve.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of poll participants say the world will become a more dangerous place when Mr Trump takes office, with almost a quarter of readers saying he will have a positive impact on world peace.

Half of all respondents say their opinion of Mr Trump has got worse since he was elected back in November.

The expressandstar.com poll, which runs for the rest of this week, asks readers five questions aimed at gauging public opinion in the Black Country and Staffordshire on the President-elect.

On Friday Mr Trump is set to take the Oath of Office on the steps of the United States Capitol Building, before offering his inaugural address as the 45th American president.

He has already pledged a big shake up on healthcare, including a plan to ditch Obamacare and replace it with a scheme that provides 'insurance for everybody'.

He has also said he wants to hold separate summits with Theresa May and Vladimir Putin within weeks of taking office.

Mr Trump, who is embroiled in a bitter row with US intelligence agencies over his alleged close ties with the Kremlin, has vowed to press for a deal involving a reduction in nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions against Russia.

Those who have taken part in the Express & Star poll include A Lone Voice, who says Mr Trump 'appears to tell it like it is' in contrast to the 'mealy mouthed apologists the UK are landed with'.

And Ivor says he believes Mr Trump will 'make America great again' by supporting blue collar workers and reducing unemployment.

Meanwhile charlie.bear.5836 praised Mr Trump for 'calling out CNN and the BBC' for their reporting on the Russian dossier scandal.

Graham said it would benefit Britain if the country could build a good relationship with the new Republican president.

"I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Mr Trump, but he won the presidential election and whether or not the rest of the world likes it, the rest of the world is going to have to do business with him," he wrote.

"It is certainly in our interest that as we move toward our EU exit we build on the special relationship our two nations enjoy."
