EU referendum: How did the West Midlands vote?

It's official - the Black Country and Staffordshire have unanimously voted to leave the EU.

Local authorities across the region have backed Brexit amid joyous scenes for out campaigners. Overall in the West Midlands 1,755,687 people voted for Leave, while 1,207,175 voted Remain. The results have mirrored an Express & Star poll which saw potential voters from across the Black Country and Staffs indicate they would vote Leave. A total of 80 per cent of almost 8,000 readers who took part in the poll said they would vote Leave, while Boris Johnson was rated as the politician most likely to influence voters' decisions.

The poll also saw immigration come out as the key issue for voters in the Black Country and Staffordshire, and more than eight in 10 people said they were not impressed with David Cameron's EU renegotiation deal.

The first results to be announced today was in Wyre Forest, with 36,692 votes to leave compared to 21,240 to remain.

This was closely followed by Cannock Chase, where 36,984 people voted for leave and 16,684 to remain.

Wolverhampton saw a whopping 62 per cent vote to leave - 73,798 compared to 44,138 remain votes.

Lichfield voters also overwhelmingly backed Brexit, 37,214 to 26,064 - as did residents in Walsall, with a resounding 68 per cent of the 135,685 voters in favour of leave.

In South Staffs, there were 43,248 votes counted for leave, nearly double the 23,444 for remain.

There were more than twice as many votes for leave in Sandwell as for remain - 98,250 to 49,004.

While 34,098 voted in favour of staying in the EU in Stafford, 43,386 decided they wanted to leave.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the night came in Birmingham - which voted for leave by a margin of just 3,000.

Leave was backed by 226,251 voters and Remain by 223,451.

The final declaration for Dudley saw 56,780 for Remain and 118,446 Leave on a turnout of 71.7 per cent.
