Walsall Conservatives: We will return to power quickly

The Conservatives in Walsall have vowed to be back in power in a 'very short space of time', after losing control of the council to a Labour/Liberal Democrat axis.

Councillor Mike Bird, the leader of Walsall's Tory group and former leader of the council, made the comments after his party were officially ousted this week.

Councillor Bird, who earlier this month blasted 'lazy' voters in Walsall for not turning up to the polls, told the Express & Star: "At the end of the day we have to accept that it is all about numbers and we have to win those numbers back.

"I am fairly confident that the Conservatives will be back in power in a very short space of time but only time will tell with the electorate.

"We will be as transparent and as robust as possible in opposition but we have to take into account most stuff goes through the cabinet and we will have to scrutinise those decisions.

"The socialist policies are different to ours and as a result we will view them on that basis.

"I think you have to remain upbeat, I have been in this game for 36 years going onto 39 at the end of my term and you do have ups and downs.

"This is one of the troughs we are in now but we will dust ourselves off and come back and fight again.

"I was already elected unopposed and will remain on as leader as long as they want me."
