Tory John Campion is elected West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner

Conservative candidate John Campion was this afternoon elected as Shropshire's new police and crime commissioner.

Mr Campion won with 83,619 votes in a second round of counting, against his nearest rival Labour's Daniel Walton, on 55,162, to become in the race to be Polic eand Crime Commissioner for West Mercia.

The second count took place after Mr Campion won 64,514 votes in the first round and Mr Walton got 40,870.

Under the election rules if there is no outright winner in the first round then voters' second preferences are taken into account.

There were more than 5,000 rejected votes in the first round

Turnout across the whole West Mercia area was 21.27 per cent, while for Shropshire it was 16.9 per cent.

Mr Campion won the Shropshire part of the vote with 12,957 votes.

Former deputy commissioner Barrie Sheldon came second in Shropshire, with 7,115 votes, and Labour's Daniel Walton third, with 6,580. Fourth place was Ukip's Peter Jewell (6,082), fifth Greens' John Raine (2,897), and sixth Margareth Rowley the Lib Dems (2,530).

The count took place at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

Eight candidates stood to succeed Bill Longmore, who is retiring from the £75,000-a-year post after a single term of office.

The winning candidate will be responsible for a budget of nearly £203 million for the coming year.
