Poll: Should MPs be given a pay rise?

MPs were braced for a major public backlash today as a deal that would see their pay soar by almost £10,000 was unveiled.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) was expected to propose a rise to around £75,000, but offset it with a crackdown on perks such as dinners on expenses. It will argue the overall package will only be a few hundred thousand pounds a year more costly.

The existing final salary pension scheme is also set to be downgraded to a career average system, clawing back some of the millions of pounds in extra salary.

Dudley North MP Ian Austin said: "I think IPSA have gone mad suggesting a 12 per cent pay rise when the rest of the public sector has had its pay frozen or capped. "I've not asked for this rise, I think it's a crazy idea – I hope IPSA drops the plans."
