A report by consumer firm Which? rated the district 30th out of 386 across the whole country, as well as rating it as the best in Staffordshire and the West Midlands.

Which? compiled the list according to the percentage of food outlets which were 'satisfactorily' complying with hygiene laws, the proportion of outlets that had been inspected and rated and the percentage of planned interventions and inspections carried out.

The district has 826 food premises, of which around 639 have the highest hygiene rating of five.

Muriel Davis, the council's health and wellbeing portfolio leader, said: "We encourage all residents to look out for the black and green rating sticker, which should be displayed in the window."
