Police 'confident' of arrest over hit-and-run death of pensioner Mary Humpherson

The inquest into a pensioner who was killed in a hit-and-run crash has been adjourned as police try to track down the driver.

Mary Elizabeth Humpherson, aged 88, who was known as Betty, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a silver Ford Mondeo on Birmingham Road on October 21.

The driver abandoned the car and ran off following the smash, which happened just before noon near the junction with Peak House Road.

Mrs Humpherson died later the same day.

Sgt Chris Ridge, collision investigator from West Midlands Police, said: "We have not identified a driver as such yet.

"Inquiries are still ongoing. Evidence has been gathered but it is DNA based. I am confident that we will identify a suspect in the next few weeks and an arrest will be made."

Assistant Coroner Angus Smiley adjourned the inquest for six weeks.
