Our little angel! 11lb 11oz Leelah is New Cross Hospital's heaviest baby

'Oh my God' was the reaction of mother Lauren Brain after she gave birth to a baby weighing a massive 11lb, 11oz.

The 25-year-old said she was 'flabbergasted' when told by nurses her baby girl Leelah was the heaviest a Black County maternity ward had seen.

Amazingly, the baby was delivered naturally less than two hours after the now mother-of-four's waters broke.

Rushed into Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital by finace Anthony Sutton, Miss Brain had planned a water birth - but contractions speeded up and she gave birth soon after.

By her side was Mr Sutton, their two-year-old son Reggie-Lee, sister Amanda John and mother Amanda Brain.

When told Leelah was the heaviest seen at the midwifery-led unit, Miss Brain said: "Oh my God."

Speaking yesterday, she said: "I was flabbergasted

"I thought she was quite small and chunky - but never the weight they said.

"It was all quite straight forward compared to my first birth.

"They do say the bigger they are the easier it is."

Miss Brain's first child, Reggie Lee, weighed in at 9lb.

During the birth of Leelah the former Fair Oak Academy student lost 1,200ml of blood in the birth and was kept on a drip for five hours.

Doctors then took the baby into a neo-natal unit after discovering she had trouble breathing due to liquid not spreading from her lungs to the rest of her body - partly due to her size.

They starved her until the liquid passed through her body - eventually coming home in Merrick Road in Wednesfield a week later.

Miss Brain, who moved to Wednesfield from Rugeley two years ago, said: "We were so happy to get her home, she's a great addition to the family and everyone loves her already."

However, Miss Brain says she has been left with minor pelvis pain as a result of the birth, which happened on August 12 at 7.53pm.

Mr Sutton, who is studying carpentry at City of Wolverhampton College, said: "It's wicked."

On being told about the little girl's weight, he said: "I was a bit shocked. We're delighted to have her back now though.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the heaviest baby born weighed in at 22lb 8oz. The boy was born to Sig. Carmelina Fedele (Italy) at Aversa, Italy in September 1955.

A British mother gave birth to a girl weighing 13lb 7oz three years ago. Maxime Marin, aged 40, delivered the girl naturally in Spain.

The average weight of a baby is 7lb 8oz.
