The highly-thought-of student had been on her nursing degree course since 2013 and had been nominated for the most engaged student of the year in the university's Extra Mile awards.

Michael Adams, associate head of the university's School of Nursing and Midwifery, said: "Everyone has been shocked and saddened by the news of Sally's death.

"Sally was a well-liked and committed student nurse and I have been inundated with messages from staff clearly upset by this news all saying what a kind and caring person Sally was.

"We would extend our deepest condolences to Sally's family, and friends, our thoughts are with them at this time."

Ms Cooper is originally from Codsall but moved to Edgbaston, Birmingham for her studies.
