Staff said they were thrilled to have been honoured again at the prestigious show.

Founder David Austin also got to meet the Queen as she went from stall to stall.

Michael Marriott, head rosarian for the Albrighton rose breeders, said: "We are absolutely delighted.

"We were judged on the quality of the stand, the quality of the roses and the overall splendour and we're thrilled to have won our 22nd gold medal.

"We always hope to hit gold at the Chelsea Flower Show, but you never quite know until you get here on the Tuesday whether or not you'll get it. We were nervous – sometimes we've been disappointed in the past, but there was absolutely no disappointment here this morning."

Although the stand was set up on Monday, it opened to the public on Tuesday. Michael said it had been a very successful opening day.

"It has been very crowded," he added.

"Our stand has been full of people, all admiring the roses. There's been a lot good comments about how good our stand it, with people mentioning the fantastic fragrance and how well the roses have grown. It's always a great joy to be here."

The Queen met with founder and owner David Austin late in the afternoon on Monday.

Michael said: "The Queen met with David. He was absolutely delighted. They are both 90 this year, so I think they had a good chat about that.

"It's not often that you get this sort of opportunity. The queen has only been once or twice before, so it was a rare honour. She was only here for a short time, so it's brilliant that she came to our stall."

The launch of David Austin Roses' Roald Dahl themed stall proved hugely popular, with the author's widow, Felicity Dahl, on hand.

"We had a lot of people come to watch the launch," Michael said.

"Felicity was absolutely delighted. To have a rose named after you is one of the greatest thrills you can imagine, so to have one in memory of her husband was such a delight."

Staff at David Austin Roses will enjoy the end of the flower show, which finished on Saturday, and will then take a break before thinking about next year's trip to Chelsea.
