His mother had gone to put the bins out but was shocked to find her son had shut the door behind her.

She called 999 immediately at 9.50am on New Year's Eve after realising the door had been left off the latch.

A crew from Bloxwich Fire Station arrived within minutes and firefighters managed to gain access into the house in Bolton Way, Bloxwich.

The little lad was soon reunited unhurt with his mother.

The day turned out okay too for the youngsters after he was given a ride upfront in a real life fire truck.

James White, crew commander at Bloxwich Fire Station, said: "The mum had gone to take the bins out and thought she had bolted the door.

"But he pushed the door behind him because he was getting cold and it locked.

"We asked him what he had got for Christmas and he said one present was a fire engine, so we asked him if he wanted to see the real thing.

"He was a lovely little boy."
