Wolverhampton Sikh temple expansion: Plans on hold as bank account frozen

Plans for a three-storey expansion to Wolverhampton's biggest Sikh temple are in limbo after the Gurdwara's bank account was frozen.

The Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Sedgley Street, Blakenhall, wants to build a vast on-site heritage centre, featuring a new glass dome and stone archways.

The project was given the go ahead by planners at Wolverhampton council, but the work has been put on hold indefinitely after the temple's bank account was blocked.

The decision relates to a row with the Government's Charity Commission over the election of the temple's committee earlier this year.

It means that committee members have no access to temple bank accounts and have been unable to pay staff in recent weeks.

Committee spokesman Teja Sidhu said: "This project would be up and running by now, but we are faced with an operational issue that is holding everything up.

"The new building is desperately needed and in our opinion will solve a lot of the issues at the Gurdwara.

"We are working to try and get the bank account functioning, but this has caused a serious delay to our plans."
