Mr Martin was 69 and lived in Florence Avenue, Lanesfield. He was known as Batman to his friends and neighbours and was a regular at the Three Cups pub in Ettingshall.

Sonia and Sunil Dhanda lived above him in Florence Avenue.

"He was a nice guy, easygoing," Mr Dhanda said. "We were gobsmacked when we heard. We have been here three years so that's how long we've known him.

"He kept himself to himself, he was a quiet person but you could see that he had been through a lot.

"Everyone used to call him Batman because you would never see him in the day but you would see him in the evening.

"There's always only been four flats here so we're a close community, but everyone on this estate knew him."

For the last few months of his life, Mr Martin lived with Zac Parcell and his son Dylan.

Mr Parcell said of his flatmate: "We looked after him because he wasn't very well, he was in and out of hospital. He stayed here for a few months.

"He was a quiet guy, he kept himself to himself. He was a lovely man though, a great geezer.

"He got on well with Dylan, he used to give him money to go to the shops and buy sweets."

Mr Martin was a regular at the Three Cups pub in Ettingshall where all the regulars there would know him by Batman.

Wesley Clarke, Mr Martin's third and final neighbour, described him as 'friendly'.

He said: "He lived there about six years. In his younger days he said he had his own landscaping business.

"He was quite friendly and was always out and about.

"He took my car to be MOTd a few times when I was at work."

The fatal crash happened at around 6.30pm on November 5. Mr Martin was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident police sealed off the road in both directions between the junctions of Spring Road and Ward Grove.

The road was closed for several hours while police investigated.
