A West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic in a rapid response vehicle was forced to stop on his way to a 999 medical emergency after two fireworks were thrown at his car just before 9.30pm Tuesday.

He was on his way to an address in Fordhouses when a lit firework was thrown at the bonnet near the McDonalds in Stafford Street, Wolverhampton.

A second firework was then thrown which he managed to put out with a fire extinguisher.

Spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "It is extremely frustrating that a member of staff has had his life put at risk through such stupidity while he is trying to help someone else in their hour of need.

"Thankfully, he was uninjured in what is a despicable incident.

"West Midlands Police were informed immediately and we are working closely with them to identify the offenders."
