Fantasist Muhammad Rajab, aged 34, flashed down the Smart car on the northbound carriageway near junction 7 for Great Barr in July this year.

The security guard then told the driver he had pulled him over because he didn't have his fog lights on.

But he was interrupted when a real Highways Officer on patrol pulled up behind the fake cop because he had stopped in a dangerous place.

Rajab then fled the scene but was arrested after a check of his number plate revealed his true identity.

A court heard when officers attended his home they found a full police uniform, including handcuffs, a police baton, police notebooks and a canister of CS Spray.

Rajab, of Bordesley Green, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer, being in possession of police articles, possession of CS Spray and stopping on a hard shoulder.

He was sentenced to two months in prison suspended for 15 months at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday.

Thomas Wheeler, defending, said Rajab had spent most of his life in Holland where he had been a security guard. He added: "Mr Rajab fully accepts this was a serious offence."
